AcademicIndustrial Training Module Proposal – Navita Jain

“Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think”

ECE is a very fascinating and interesting field to pursue studies and build a professional
career if the students have the right passion for it. I believe students should be equipped with
appropriate knowledge and motivation at the formative stage to take informed career choices
and put efforts in the right direction to achieve success.

I started my career as an academician and was fortunate to have worked in public and
private multi-national corporates. The experience helped me understand the commercial
applications of the theories learned in college and connect the dots in a meaningful way over
the years. I want to design a training curriculum to bridge the gap between what is taught at
college and what are the industry expectations. The training modules are prepared to
address the knowledge, awareness and skill development challenges faced by the students. It
should provide them with exposure to the different domain streams and career opportunities
available in electronics and communication engineering.

A methodological approach will be utilised to generate student’s interest level on various

career options available and help them choose a career based on their potential to improve
chances of success. Based on my professional experience, I feel students start preparing for
jobs without knowing their interest and invariably follow a career path where their destiny
takes them. Major due diligence is performed at the time of subject selection (after class 10th)
and at time of college selection (after 12th standard), however career selection is generally
assigned less planning time. It’s only getting the job as soon as possible or it will be too late.

At the college level students knows only which is/are their favourite subjects amongst
subjects they are studying. I believe that if students get exposure and knowledge of industry
related to their favourite subject before completing engineering it would be of great help
towards successful and as per potential career.

This training involves explanation of subject wise career opportunity and guidance on ways
to pursue it. The complete training would be divided into 8 major sessions as follows:

Session 1: Introduction of plenty of opportunities for ECE students in both public and private
corporate sector. List of companies in public sector which hire ECE engineers, methods of
recruitment and guidance on preparation for recruitment. It would build high level broad
understanding of types of jobs available and related subjects in corporate sector.

Subsequent sessions would be organised for each specialist industrial domains as follows:

Session 1: Introduction
Electronics and communications

Session 2: Session 3: Session 6: Session 7:

Session 4: Session 5:
Telecommunicati Telecommunicatio Circuit Chip
on sector (wired) n sector (wireless) Networking VLSI design design

Each session following topics will be covered:

Basic knowledge, related subjects and underlying technologies

List of companies with a brief business overview

Job opportunities
Industrial
Sector
Skill sets requirements

Online resources

Small projects and presentation by students

Lastly, I propose to do a session on interview preparation, resume writing and soft skills. The
session will helps students to build self-confidence to succeed interviews with ease. They will
learn to weight their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses. They will be trained on
methodologies and tools to manage their time, and develop their communication skills.
Students will showcase their projects in this session.

Time assignment for sessions:

Session 1: one lecture(50-60 min)

Session 2-7 : Three Lectures(two of 50-60 min.+one for presentation by

students)

Session 8 : one lecture(50-60 min) and showcase of students projects.

A sample preliminary draft of learning objectives from Session 2 on

Telecommunication sector(wired network)

1) Basic knowledge, related subjects and underlying technologies : Fundamental of

Optical fibre communications, modulation and multiplexing, architecture,
transmission technologies, SDH and DWDM concepts, testers, Telecom management
network.overview of NGN, NGN in access and core networks.
2) List of companies:

Railtel corporation of Inida Ltd. : RailTel Corporation of India Limited is a Mini-

Ratna under Government of India. It is the largest Neutral Telecom Infrastructure
provider of India with a strong footprint in diverse fields of OFC based SDH and IP
networks(along Railway track), Tower Co-location, Retail Broadband, Data Centre many
more.

3) Job opportunities: Railtel offer job opportunities in mant area like Datacentre
infrastructure, Network bandwidth and National level projects.

4) Skill sets required: Strong knowledge of Transmission, Fiber Optics, PDH / SDH /
OTN / DWDM / Ethernet / EoSDH / EoMSP / ATM principles,networking
concepts,good interpersonal skills

5) Online resources :

6) Potential mini-projects:

- Optical fibre voice communication - A simple model shows how a voice picker form
microphone is amplified & transmitted through infrared & being sent by optical fiber link
cable & retrieved at the other end. This is a handmade project on a general purpose PCB and
uses Electronics / Electrical components as per requirement of a particular model.

- Ultrasonic door opener - A highly sensitive door opening system normally used in malls,
restaurants or other air-conditioned areas to open the door automatically.

- Ultrasonic radar - It moves in 360 degree circular motion and detect the object in the near-
by area and gives alarm indication.
