Simplified Design Procedure

1. Study the site plan and elevation of the installation. Determine the lighting needs in
consultation with standard and the end user.
2. Select the light sources and luminaire, appropriate to the installation to the installation
geometry, nature of visual task and energy criteria.
3. Calculate the room index(RI) using the formula:

𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ∗𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑡ℎ
Room index(RI) = (𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔ℎ𝑡+𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑡ℎ)∗𝑀𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
4. Base on this coefficient of utilization of the value can be obtained from the C.O.U table for
the selected luminaire. This value is generally 70% of the light colored, 50% for average,
30% for dark walls and 50%, 30% and 10% for corresponding ceilings.
5. Select the light loss factor (LLF), Third factor was previously referred to as maintenance
factor (MF) generally accepted value is:

A/C rooms, Clean Rooms, etc. 0.8

6. Use the formula to arrive the quantity of luminaires.

𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎∗𝐼𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
No. of Luminaires = 𝐶𝑈∗𝐿𝐿𝐹∗𝐿𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑛 𝑂𝑢𝑡𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑢𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑒
7. Arrange the luminaire symmetrically giving due consideration spacing criterion to achieve
uniformity of illumination

𝑅𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎
Area per Luminaire (Fixture)= 𝑁𝑜.𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑖𝑥𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒

Therefore, fixtures spacing= √𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑓𝑖𝑥𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑠
