PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

Gracious God, as you have called workers to varied tasks in the world and
in your church, so you have called me to my ministry in my family, at
work, and here at Trinity Lutheran Church. Grant us all joy and a spirit of
bold trust, that our work may stir up each of us to a life of fruitful service;
through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Hosea’s marriage to a faithless wife symbolizes Israel’s faithlessness

Let us pray.
Almighty and ever-living God, you are always more ready to hear than we
are to pray, and you gladly give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour
upon us your abundant mercy. Forgive us those things that weigh on our
conscience, and give us those good things that come only through your
Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end
to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5On that day I will break the bow of
Israel in the valley of Jezreel.”

“Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have pity on the house of
Israel or forgive them. 7But I will have pity on the house of Judah, and I
will save them by the LORD their God; I will not save them by bow, or by
sword, or by war, or by horses, or by horsemen.”

When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and bore a son.

Then the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not my people and

SECOND READING: Colossians 2:6-19
Paul warns his congregation in Colossae about “the empty lure” of
philosophies and traditions that compromise faith. Through the gift of faith,
the church is mystically connected with Christ in his death and
resurrection, which is enacted in baptism.

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your
lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as
you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty
deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of
the universe, and not according to Christ. 9For in him the whole fullness of
deity dwells bodily, 10and you have come to fullness in him, who is the
head of every ruler and authority. 11In him also you were circumcised with
a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the
circumcision of Christ; 12when you were buried with him in baptism, you
were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised

dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking,

GOSPEL: Luke 11:1-13

After prayerful deliberation, the Council of Trinity Lutheran Church has
appointed Reverend Elizabeth Buuck to serve as Interim Pastor of our
congregation
The presiding minister addresses the one being installed.
Our Lord Jesus, who came among us as a servant, calls us to faith and a life
of loving service to our neighbor. Each of us renders a particular service, a
gift from God to inspire us to love and good works.
Elizabeth in the presence of this assembly will you commit yourself to this
new trust and responsibility, in the confidence that it comes from God?

Will you carry out this ministry in accordance with the holy scriptures and
with the confessions of the Lutheran church and in harmony with the

Let us pray.
God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures

Lord.

Lutherans believe, teach and confess that we receive the true Body and
Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. If you desire to pick up the cross and

prepared to receive the sacrament today we hope you will join us at the
table. Simply hold your hands over your heart and the pastor will give you
a blessing. Pastor will be glad to discuss Holy Communion and Holy
Baptism with you!

Remembering, therefore, his life, death, resurrection, and ascension, we

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. You made the
whole earth for your glory; all creation praises you. Renew in us all the
commitment to use our gifts in the service of others, and especially of those
in need. Let us be your hands to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless,
clothe the naked, comfort the weary and outcast, welcome the stranger, care
for creation, and be loving neighbors to all people.
Bless Pastor Charles and Cheryl as they depart to teach about and
experience your Word of life on sabbatical. Bless their labor and their
learning. Bless those who receive Cheryl in Madagascar and Ethiopia, and
both Charles and Cheryl in Malaysia. May the gifts they use and share be
signs of your love to all people. Keep them safe in their travels and let their
homecoming be joyful.

Johann Sebastian Bach, died 1750; Heinrich Schütz, died 1672; George
Frederick Handel, died 1759; musicians
Sunday, July 28, 2019
These three German-born musicians have done much to enrich the life of
the church. Schütz was an early master who focused on settings of biblical
texts. Bach wrote over 300 cantatas along with works for organ and
instrumental pieces, and has been called the "fifth evangelist" for the way
he proclaimed the gospel in music. Handel's great work, Messiah, is a
setting of scriptural texts.
Mary, Martha, and Lazarus of Bethany
Monday, July 29, 2019
Friends of Jesus, Mary and Martha are remembered for the hospitality of
their home that they offered him—Martha focused on serving their guest,
and Mary on listening to him. Their brother Lazarus was raised from the
dead as a sign of the greater resurrection to come.
Olaf, King of Norway, martyr, died 1030
Monday, July 29, 2019
Considered the patron saint of Norway, Olaf went from a life of piracy to
becoming Christian and declaring himself king of Norway. He revised the
laws and tried to administer them fairly. Driven from Norway in a
rebellion, he was killed in battle trying to regain his kingdom.
