LANGUAGE TESTING DEVELOPMENT

1. The differences between evaluation, assessment and testing are:

 Evaluation is a process that needs for the educational process. It is useful to
provide the data of students’ abilities and to knows the students weeknesses in
learning English. Bloom in Daryanto’s book stated, “Evaluation is the systematic
collection of evidence to determine whether in fact certain changes are talking
place in learners as well as to determine the amount or degree of change in
individual students.”
 Assessment is the process of documenting knowledge, skills, attitudes and
beliefs, usually in measurable terms. The goal of assessment is to make
improvements, as opposed to simply being judged. In an educational context,
assessment is the process of describing, collecting, recording, scoring, and
interpreting information about learning.
 Test is used to know the weakness and the strength of the students’ abilities in
learning activities. By using the test, the teachers easily map the students’
learning achievement. According to Gregory, “Test is a standardized procedure for
sampling behavior and describing it with categories or scores.”

2. According to Hughes, there are four types of test, they are “proficiency tests,
achievement tests, diagnostic tests, and placement tests.”
 Proficiency test is constructed to obtain the global competence of a learner in a
language. Harmer explains, “Proficiency test gives a general picture of a learners’
knowledge and ability (rather than measureprogress).”
 Achievement test are useful for analyzing the extent to which students have
acquired language features that have already been taught. According to Brown,
“Achievement test is to determine acquisition of course objectives at the end of a
period of instruction.”
 Diagnostic test can be used to expose learner difficulties, gaps in their knowledge,
and skill deficiencies during a course. Arikunto said, “Tes diagnostik adalah test
yang digunakan untuk mengetahui kelemahan-kelemahan siswa sehingga
berdasarkan hal tersebut dapat dilakukan penanganan yang tepat.”
 Placement test is placing new student in the right class in a school is facilitied with
the use of placement test. Hughes stated, “Placement test are intended to provide
information that will help to place students at the stage of the teaching program
most appopriate to their abilities.”

3. The purpose of testing is to know the weakness and the strength of the students’
abilities in learning activities.
