Lesson Idea Name: AREA of a Square

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 6-8th grade
Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE6.EE.2c Evaluate expressions at specific values for their variables. Include expressions that arise from
formulas in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number
exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of
Operations). For example, use the formulas 𝑉 = 𝑠3 and 𝐴 = 6𝑠2 to find the volume and surface area of a cube
with sides of length 𝑠 = 1/2.

MGSE6.G.4 Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles and use the
nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real- world and
mathematical problems.

Technology Standard Addressed: Creative Communicator

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Movie (list application): iMovie
☒ Audio (list application): Audacity

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Students with visual and hearing impairments will have successful; outcomes in this lesson because iMovie
has been selected as the technology tool. The UDL principles are clearly explained. The why is to find out the
area to be able to calculate amount of materials needed. The what is the area of a square which is
represented by their room at home. Lastly the how is use of technology tools for understanding.
Lesson idea implementation:
This lesson is a warm up exercise to an extended lesson or Project. The students will produce a movie
documenting the step to gather data for the Interior design room remodel. The area of a square is the
foundation information needed to complete the detailed project. The project overall will be done in phases
over a 2-week period.
The students produce multiple visual presentations of their choice. They will be encouraged to present
using technology to advance to Bloom’s level creating and Level 4 LoTi. The skills that each student will obtain
at completion of this project will be applicable in the work force. What they will discover is that in the
architecture field many visuals are used as presentation and implementation tools. The calculations must be
well organized and accurate to insure the final product is to code. In addition , new vocabulary is introduced.

MultiMedia Tools
Importance of technology:
The importance of using multimedia is so the visuals are well organized easy to read. The project can be done
without technology, but the time of the project will need to be lengthen by and additional week. Technology
is the most commonly used media for this field of study, therefore the familiarizing with this software are
more beneficial. The types of technology used in this project. GeoGebra of Desmos for graphing, spreadsheet
for organizing calculations, iMovie and audio. short movie.
Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: The students will be allowed to showcase work on the Classroom blog
(i.e. Schoology) I will post pics of only the projects with no personal information disclosed. Parents will be
informed that their students work will only be viewed by peers and other teachers for.
Reflective Practice: The student will achieve the understanding of several standards through the application
of the real-life scenario lesson/project, to further expand this lesson , I would add in that the students
construct a physical model of the room that they are redesigning. I believe the creativity involved in this
project will avoid any misconceptions in the how and why we use area of a square.
