Expectations For ALL Students:

I expect ALL students to come to class prepared to learn, participate, and have a great
attitude. I expect that students will not be disruptive in ways that will prevent other
students from receiving the high-quality education that ALL students deserve.

Curriculum:

Reading/Language Arts:

The Core Knowledge Language Arts Listening and Learning Strand is designed to help
students build the background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening and
reading comprehension. The decoding skills needed for future independent reading are
taught separately in the Core Knowledge Language Arts Skills Strand. The two strands
complement each other, building the requisite decoding and comprehension skills that
comprise fluent, mature reading.

Phonics:

Unit 1: Consonant sounds, one and two-syllable words


Unit 2: Vowel sounds, one and two-syllable words, quotation marks, writing narratives
and opinions
Unit 3: Spelling alternatives for vowel sounds, writing personal narratives, common and
proper nouns
Unit 4: Spelling alternatives for vowel sounds, writing friendly letters, irregular plural
nouns, action verbs, and to-be verbs
Unit 5: Spelling alternatives for vowel sounds and the schwa sound, chunking
phonemes to read multi-syllable words, adjectives, subjects and predicates
Unit 6: Adverbs, complete and incomplete sentences, run-on sentences

Math:

Eureka Math connects math to the real world in ways that take the fear out of math and
build student confidence—helping students achieve true understanding lesson by
lesson and year after year.

Science/Social Studies:

Science and Social Studies are embedded in our Reading Curriculum.

General Information:

Homework – Homework will be assigned Monday – Thursday. Homework may consist


of reading, math practice, unfinished classroom assignments, and preparation for
assessments. Reading should be done every evening. At this stage of your child’s
reading development, it is imperative that your child practice reading, both aloud to an
adult, as well as silently.

Agenda – Behavior and homework will be recorded in your child’s agenda each day.
Please sign (initial) planners each evening.
