The maximum load per unit area which the soil can carry without any yeilding,
displacement or deformation is termed as bearing capacity of Soil. The resistance to
deformation of the soil depends upon the factors like water content, bulk density, angle of
internal friction and manner in which load is applied on the soil.
Soil properties like shear strength, density, permeability etc affect the bearing capacity
of the soil. Dense sand will have more bearing capacity than the loose sand as unit wieght of
dense sand is more than the loose sand.
If we compact soil using appropiate method, then there will be increase in density and shear
strength. As a result bearing capacity also increase. There are many methods of compacting
soil on site
a. By spreading broken stones, gravel or sand and thereafter ramming well in bed of trenches
b. Using an appropiate roller as per the soil type to move at specified speed.
Typical values of soil bearing capacity
Selection of Material
As per QCS instructions the material used for filling should be free from the below mentioned
items
1. Material from marshes
2. Trees and plant slumps
3. Perishable Material
4. Deposits of sabkha with more than 5 % water soluble salts
5. Material subject to spontanous combuston
6. The minimum particle size of the fill material shall be 75 mm unless the material is classified
as rock as per the part of the specification and the placing and compaction are carried
according to the requirement of fill
7. Unit weight moisture content of the soil containing more than 5 % by mass of the over size
fraction tested in accordance with ASTM D1557 should be corrected following ASTMD4718
8. Water : Potable or brackish water shall be used for all earthwork operations exept that only
potable water shall be used for compaction of backfill material.
Compaction is the densification of soil material by the use of mechanical energy. Soil is
compacted by removing air and water from its pore space.
Compacting Equipment
a. Steel wheeled Rollers shall be of the following types
Three wheeled rollers shall be self propelled and equipped with reversing clutch, a diffrential
drive and with adjustable scrapes to keep wheel surface clean
b. Amount of Compaction: The compaction of Soil increases with the increase in amount of
compaction effort. The compaction of soil depends upon the type of soil
c. Type of soil
d. Method of Soil Compaction
1. Site will be protected by using the safety barriers and all the safety equipment will be
installed at the site.
2.Foundation for the boundary wall will be constructed after escavating up to the required dept
3. Block will be layed over the foundation after determining the height required. Height will be
same as the highest level of the ground.
4. Selected material will dump and leveled up to the required height as per the design.
5. The material will be compacted in three layers, each layer will be compacted by using the
compacting equipment and Engineer will ensure proper moisture content is available in the
soil at the time of compaction and required amount of compaction is achieved in each layer of
soil by using the laboratary tests. Optimum Moisture content of the soil will be tested if it is
required before the compaction.
6. The Engineer in charge will ensure that 90% compaction will be achieved in each layer so
that the soil will get maximum load bearing capacity after compaction.
7. The contractor will do the laboratary tests for testing the compaction achieved and the load
bearing capacity of the compacted soil and completed as per the direction of Engineer in
charge
8. After the time period, all the constructed platform will demolished and disposed from the site
9. Proposed site will be remake into the original situation as before the construction and all
facilities except irrigation lines will be restored
