Types of Receptors:

There are two types of receptors. Those are:

 1)Internal receptors
 2)Cell surface receptors

1)Internal/Intracellular/Cytoplasmic receptors:

 Found in cytoplasm of cell

 Respond to hydrophobic ligand molecules

Example:

Steroid receptors

Cell surface receptors/Trasnmembrane receptors/Cell specific proteins:

 Performs signal transduction, converting an extracellular signal into an intracellular

signal.

Classification:

There are general categories of cell surface receptors:

 Ion channel linked receptors

 G-protein linked receptors
 Enzyme linked receptors

1)Ligand gated ion channels:

 Receptors bind with ligand.

 Open a channel through the membrane that allows ions to pass through.
 Conformational change in the protein’s structure that allows ions such as Na,Ca,Mg,
and H2 to pass through.

Example: Cholinergic nicotinic receptors

Receptor Location Mechanism Major functions

M1 Nerve endings Gq coupled Increase IP3,DAG
cascade
M2 Heart, some nerve endings Gi coupled Decrease cAMP,
activates K+
channels
M3 Effector cells,Smooth Gq coupled Increase IP3,DAG
muscle,Glands,Endothelium cascade
Nn ANS ganglia Na+-K+ ion channel Depolarizeses,
evokes action
potential
Nm Neuromuscular end Plate Na+-K+ ion channel Depolarizes, evokes
action potential

2)G-protein coupled receptors:

 Binds with a ligand and activate a membrane protein called a G-

protein
 The activated G-protein then interacts with either an ion channel or
an enzyme in the membrane.
 Each receptor has its own specific extracellular domain and G-
protein binding site.

Example: Alpha and Beta adrenoceptors

3)Enzyme linked receptors:

 Cell surface receptors with intracellular domains that are associated with an enzyme.
 Normally have large extracellular and intracellular domain.
 When a ligand binds to the extracellular domain,a signal is transferred through the
membrane and activates the enzyme, which eventually leads to a response.

Example:Tyrosine Kinase receptor
