Use of Popular Media in Education

Education is dynamic so are the students and how they learn. As the time past, we seek
more ways in improving the way of teaching we have and what will teachers use to present their
everyday lesson interesting and will retain to the students mind. Information and knowledge will
not only to keep it in their mind but also use it to a real life task. The educational field needs to
build up learners who can use the knowledge they have learned in order to do things in society,
rather than just remember the content they have learned and to develop learners who are selfless
and flexible. They should be competent to use their knowledge to solve the problems they face in
society rather than simply being swallowed by them. Nowadays, as we become more modernize,
there are many ways to enrich students with information and knowledge. Printed materials are
widely used in presenting everyday lesson and students get used to it. To become more
innovative teachers now are using technology as medium of teaching. All media like printed,
visual, audio-visual are widely used nowadays to have better outcome of learning. What would
be the media that can be use to make student learn the lesson well?
Media have many forms it includes newspapers, magazines, radio, novels, television,
textbooks, photographs, cartoons, films, advertising leaflets, billboards, songs, the Internet, and
so on. These days’ teachers can bring history to the class like bringing pictures or showing video
clip about history, students can actually see experiments through video simulation, teachers can
easily provide examples using power point presentation and those new information about the
world and education field is easily recognized because of the internet. The innovative ways of
having new ways of presentation the lesson may credit to our current technology and those who
are in the endeavor of teaching.
Media can be used in almost any discipline to enhance learning, both in class, and also for out-
of-class assignments. Short film and television clips, written articles, and blog postings can be
viewed to reinforce concepts and spark discussion. Songs and music videos, especially when the
lyrics are made available, can be used to the same effect. Research suggests that people learn
abstract, new, and novel concepts more easily when they are presented in both verbal and visual
form. Other research shows that visual media make concepts more accessible to a person than
text media and help with later recall. In a research one asks a simple question, "Why do students
remember everything that's on television and forget what we lecture?" – because visual media
helps students retain concepts and ideas. Visual and audio media help students to remember
ideas and lesson rather than just seeing it in a piece of paper or blackboard. On the other hand,
why does technology plays a vital role in teaching’s media? Technology is not limited, it can be
used in a wide range and it gives almost all the information we need; technology is efficient to all
types of student, it gives equal opportunity to all; technology is more updated with the ways on
how students learn; and technology is greatly part of the real word and it extend the four walls of
classroom to other dimension and places which students can enrich what they have learned in the
class. Technology helps learners to develop digital skills like solution fluency which means the
capacity and creativity in problem solving, information fluency which is the ability to access
information, retrieve information and reflect on, assess and rewrite information, collaboration
fluency refers to teamwork, media fluency refer to channels of mass communication, creativity
fluency means the way of design and art used in a presentation, and digital ethics which means
the proper way of using any kind of media in the digital world. The crucial role that technology
plays for creating learning environments that extend the possibilities of one-way communication
media, such as movies, documentaries, television shows and music into new areas that require
interactive learning like visualizations and student-created content. . Media and technology is a
perfect match for the student learn lesson and use it properly to situations. In addition, using
internet has a lot of benefits because it provides wide information about many things but when it
is used improperly student may rely all of their requirements to it and make the internet as their
only resource in learning, so student must know the extent of using it. Student not only learn
lesson effectively by using media mention above but also they will learn basic skills using media
and technology. But we should remember that using media should jive or fit to the lesson we
present and when using technology we should also remember that using it has extent, we should
not rely on it rather we should used it as a resource to have a better way of teaching to have a
good outcome of students’ learning.
Students learn through their senses. Using media fit to their taste is one of the ways to
encourage them to understand the lesson. Media like visuals, audio, audio – visuals, printed and
technology can help teachers to make their student comprehend the everyday lesson. But there
will always be the better one to use; I suggest that technology specifically the internet could be
effective on students’ comprehension because it has all the medium use in the classroom. It has
visuals like pictures and videos, audio like songs and recordings, audio – visuals like video clips,
teasers and movie presentations and printed materials like blog post, articles and researches plus
the communication it provides. But there should be proper guidelines on how and when we
should use these media to avoid improper use of it.
