Foreword

This Part of BS 47 has been prepared under the direction of the Iron and Steel
Standards Policy Committee. It supersedes BS 47:1959, which is withdrawn.
Previous revisions of another standard, BS 11, in 1978 and 1985 incorporated
both bull head and flat bottom railway rails. This Part of BS 47 specifies
requirements for fishplates, manufactured from rolled steel, to the corresponding
rail sections in BS 11. It includes, for the first time, fishplates of a fully metric
design for the No. 113 A rail section.
Licensed Copy: Giorgio Cavalieri, ALSTOM, 15-Mar-01, Uncontrolled Copy. © BSI

It is intended that a further Part of BS 47 will be published to cover requirements

for fishplates manufactured by casting or forging.
Purchasers ordering to this Part of BS 47 are advised to specify in their
purchasing contract that the supplier operates a quality system complying with
BS 5750-1, BS 5750-2 or BS 5750-3 to ensure to their satisfaction that products
claimed to comply with BS 47-1 consistently achieve the required level of quality.
Where practicable, this standard aligns with ISO 6305-1: “Rolled steel
fishplates”, published by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO).
A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
from legal obligations.

Summary of pages

BSI — British Standards Institution

BSI is the independent national body responsible for preparing
British Standards. It presents the UK view on standards in Europe and at the
international level. It is incorporated by Royal Charter.

Revisions

British Standards are updated by amendment or revision. Users of

British Standards should make sure that they possess the latest amendments or
editions.

It is the constant aim of BSI to improve the quality of our products and services.
We would be grateful if anyone finding an inaccuracy or ambiguity while using
this British Standard would inform the Secretary of the technical committee

BSI offers members an individual updating service called PLUS which ensures
that subscribers automatically receive the latest editions of standards.

Buying standards

Orders for all BSI, international and foreign standards publications should be
addressed to Customer Services. Tel: 020 8996 9001. Fax: 020 8996 7001.

In response to orders for international standards, it is BSI policy to supply the

BSI implementation of those that have been published as British Standards,
unless otherwise requested.

Information on standards

BSI provides a wide range of information on national, European and

international standards through its Library and its Technical Help to Exporters
Service. Various BSI electronic information services are also available which give
details on all its products and services. Contact the Information Centre.
Tel: 020 8996 7111. Fax: 020 8996 7048.

Subscribing members of BSI are kept up to date with standards developments

and receive substantial discounts on the purchase price of standards. For details
of these and other benefits contact Membership Administration.
