Beaches : Family friendly and Water sports

Vourvourou beach is the thin sandy coastline bordering the village of Vourvourou that
stretches for several kilometers. The beach is divided into parts and is often integrated as
part of hotel property. Most people who use this beach are guests of the local hotels. The
exception to this rule is on the northern end where there are boat rentals, this is more of a
public beach.

Organization on this beach is usually done by the hotel that owns the property behind the
beach. The sun-beds are normally only for the guests of the hotel. Other than this, there is
some public beach organization on the northern part by the boat rentals.

The sand is normally soft sand along with occasional pebble. The water is shallow and
good for families with small children. The only caution is that there are many boats along
this beach so parents should use good judgement and pay attention to the safety of their
children.

What’s great about Vourvourou Beach

Convenient beach if you are living nearby. Good for boat rentals.

And what’s not…

Mainly claimed by the hotels and there is much boat activity.

Karidi beach

Beaches, 10 Best Beaches, and Video : Family friendly and undeveloped beach

Karidi beach has its main beach and a second beach to the south. These beaches are real
magnets for tourists in the summer and one of Sithonia’s most sought after beaches.
Photogenic Karidi is often in websites and magazines as a picture to lure you to
Sithonia’s fantastic gems.

There is no organization on the beach as far as beach bars are concerned, this also means
no sun-beds and umbrellas. At the entrance to Karidi beach is a new restaurant called
Melia, here is also a take away bar where you can get food to take to the beach. We
highly recommend trying their unique calamari gyros! Up the road about 400 m is also a
pizzeria at Top Studios.

The beach is very shallow like a large sheltered aquamarine swimming pool. The sand is
powdery soft and cannot be compared with any other sand in Sithonia. Adults can walk
out 50+ meters and the water won’t get past the waist, so this really is the perfect kid’s
pool. Even in the end season this beach will be crowded so it’s good to get here early in
the day if you want parking and room for your towel.

What’s great about Karidi Beach

Gorgeous photogenic beach. Calm shallow water and powdery sand.

No loud music and perfect for the children.

And what’s not…

Crowded at all times and the water can at times get murky when seaweed gets blown into the ba

Armenistis beach
Armenistis beach has been coined as one of Greece’s greatest camping beaches. With a kilometer
of pure sand and shallow water this beach has definitely earned its title and also has the rating as
a “Blue Flag” beach. The size of Armenistis assures that you will always find space for your
towel and not feel crowded.

Armenistis is wonderfully organized by the campsite that bears the same name. There is a beach
bar that cleverly enough doesn’t take up space from the beach and a restaurant where you can
enjoy fresh seafood meals. All other forms of beach sports and water sports can easily be enjoy
on this beach and even the odd concert! Toilets, mini markets, coffee shops, you name it
Armenistis has it all.

The view from the beach awards its visitors with a dominant Mt. Athos on the horizon. What a
treat it is if you manage to rent a beachfront caravan that puts you front and center to spectacular
sunrises. If you enter through the campsite you will need to pay an entrance fee which can be
used against drink purchases at the bar. To the left of the Camping entrance is a road for free
access to the beach.

What’s great about Armenistis Beach

Large sandy beach with clear water. Can get some awesome waves. Ultra-organized with restaurants,
sports, toilets and even WiFi internet! Great place for camping.

And what’s not…

A car is needed to get to Armenistis, other than this everything is great.

Orange beach (Kavourotripes)

Orange beach is also called Portokali and Kavourotripes, the later one meaning crab holes. This
pretty well describes this beach that is actually many small beaches or small white sand coves
that are found over kilometers of coastline. Be brave and explore as there are many small
beaches that are difficult to reach and these ones usually have few people.

The main beach is organized by a beach bar and is overcrowded with sun-beds and umbrellas, by
11am you won’t be able to find an emply chair. People keep crowding in until the cliffs and rocks
around have bodies sunbathing in almost every crevice. If you are unfortunate to find a place
there are other beaches further up the coast where you may find space to relax. The last couple of
years have seen more food stands being set up for the needs of the crowds.

The water is an uncomparible green-blue and very transparent, the sand is powdery soft.
Snorkeling around the rocks is also recommended.

What’s great about Orange Beach

Great beaches and water for swimming. Free campers set up among the pines. Great view of Mt. Athos.

And what’s not…

Has become overcrowded even in the off season. A little difficult to get to.

Conclusion:

One of Sithonia’s most visited beaches, the sand and water is amazing. It’s worth the trip, but be
prepared for a party or venture out to find your own quiet beach.

Sarti beach
Sarti beach is Sithonia’s pragmatic beach, everything you need is here. The ‘Blue Flag’ Sarti
beach seems to have no end, the wide stretch of yellow/white sand goes on for kilometers. The
direct view to Mt. Athos is a real distinguishing feature of Sarti beach, you can’t find a better or
closer view of Mt. Athos than from here.

Sarti is a resort that is still developing, but nothing is lacking. The promenade has endless
options of restaurants and bars and in the last few years the beach has become quite organized
with beach bars that put out sun beds, umbrellas, organized beach sports, water sports including
diving. If we are to compare Sarti with other beaches in Sithonia, this one is probably the best
rounded out beach of them all.

The water of Sarti beach is not too shallow, not too deep and with a consistent sandy bottom you
just want to play all day! Each year, more tourists seem to discover Sarti, but still this massive
beach won’t fill up. You can still find a quiet spot to throw down your towel and perhaps not see
another soul for a hundred meters or more.

What’s great about Sarti Beach

Well organized and developed. One of Halkidiki’s longest and widest beaches. Great view of Mt. Athos.
Something to please everyone.

Sykia beach
Sykia or Sikia beach is just a short drive south of Sarti. Like Sarti beach it is long and wide with
beautiful sand and has the “Blue flag” classification. The seabottom is also pleasantly sandy and
has a good depth not being too shallow or deep. Since Sykia is not a well sought after destination
a big plus is no crowds.

There is some organization here with a couple of beach bars that have set up sun beds and
parasols, but not too much. There is plenty of camping on Sykia beach and the beaches around
and there are plenty of really cool smaller beaches close by with good restaurants and beach bars.

As many beaches on Sithonia’s eastern side, you get a great view of Mount Athos and also some
beautiful sunrises.

What’s great about Sykia Beach

Very large beach that never fills up. Has some organization so you can find food and drinks.

And what’s not…

Most restaurants and food options are at a distance.

Sykia beach is accessed by driving on the Sithonia road south, past the village Sykia. There is a
road that turns left directing you to the beach.

Kriaritsi beach
Kriaritsi beach is a long bay that is actually 2 beaches divided by a crag. The southern smaller
section of beach is frequented by nudists who set up camp over the summer. The northern larger
part is also very much a campers beach but the more clothes friendly kind. Facing the open sea,
the water is amazingly pure, a delight for swimmers and is rated among Sithonia’s top 10!

The organized campsites care for a small part of the beach and operate a restaurant and a beach
bar. There is another beach bar in the center of the beach which is operated by the taverna about
100 meters behind the beach. Sun-beds and umbrellas are available at these spots as are toilets
and showers.

The water at Kriaritsi is deep which means you can get some good waves, but it can also be
amazingly calm. The beach drops off steeply and continues to drop off so that just 15 m off shore
you can’t touch the bottom. Kriaritsi is also a great beach for windsurfing and kiteboarding or
just to soak up the sun. Kriaritsi is a must do destination and not to be left off your Halkidiki
beach list.

What’s great about Kriaritsi Beach

One of Sithonia’s best 10. Course sand that doesn’t stick to you. Great swimming.

And what’s not…

Real isolation and hard to reach. Minimally organized. Toilets a little difficult to find.

Access is a little difficult. You need a car or a good set of legs. Driving north from Kalamitsi a few
kilometers, you will arrive at an overpass. Turn right onto a dirt road that will take you into a maze of
abandoned streets of a undeveloped community. Follow the written directions, mainly spray painted on
the pavement. The difficulty of getting here is made up for when you arrive.

Kalamitsi beach
Kalamitsi beach is considered a medium sized beach and is located on the southern tip of
Sithonia. Situated in a beautiful bay, the water is quite sheltered and calm. The bay has a direct
opening to the sea, which allows for remarkably clear water.

The beach is well organized with some great restaurants, trendy beach bars and lots of sports
opportunities such as paddle boat or canoe rentals and scuba diving.

There is plenty of space on the beach and most of it is not organized, so if you prefer to throw
down a towel and not pay for a sun bed it is an option. The sand is soft, no pebbles here, and the
soft sand continues far into the water, making it a great place to play and an option for families.

What’s great about Kalamitsi Beach

A relaxed beach with lots of extras. Some of the best lunch restaurants in Sithonia. Great diving and
snorkeling.

Porto Koufo beach

Porto Koufo beach is located in an almost enclosed bay that makes one of the largest natural
harbours in Greece. From the beach you get the impression that you are on a large mountain lake
and not at all on the sea. The beach is a narrow ribbon of sand that lines the edge of the bay from
the harbor all the way to the southern end.

The village of Porto Koufo is a fishing village and fishing is one of its popular pastimes. The
beach is organized in places by some hotels and apartments with their beach front properties, but
otherwise most of the beach has no organization.

The sand is soft and the water gets deep very quickly. This is a great place to relax and throw up
a fishing line. The deep and protected waters attract many fishermen who spend their mornings
and evenings fishing from the sand. Also Porto Koufo has in recent years attracted many free
divers.

What’s great about Gerakini Beach

Great for fishing and seafood restaurants. The water is very clear and sand soft. No crowds.

Toroni beach
Toroni beach in the village of Toroni is an extremely long “Blue Flag” beach that lives up to all
the hype. This beach is so large and the tourists so few that it almost always appears to be quite
empty. The setting of Toroni beach is quite spectacular with the ruins of the old Byzantine castle
– Likythos, as its trademark. At the base of the ruins, the harbor affords some spectacular
snorkeling and diving opportunities, here you can see the sunken ruins of the ancient town.

Toroni beach is very well organized with restaurants and beach bars lining the boardwalk and
many provide sun beds and umbrellas, but still these are minimal so as not to take away the
beauty of the beach.

To walk on the course grains of sand both on the beach and in the water is like walking on a
cushion of air. The water in Toroni gets deep quickly, so parents should be attentive to their
children, but over all it is a good family beach and is great for swimmers and even fishing in the
evening twilight.

What’s great about Toroni Beach

Large sandy beach that never gets crowded. Good for families who want rest or action.

And what’s not…

Not a party beach and a tour boat from Kassandra arrives each day to drop off crowds of tourists for 2
hours on the beach.

Toroni beach is easily accessed by entering Toroni off the main Sithonia road. The town is
built along the beach road so you can’t miss it.

Tristinika beach

Tristinika beach is a spectacular long beach just north of Toroni and can be compared to Toroni
beach minus the development. The beach is popular with free campers that could almost fill the
north end of the beach in the high season.

The only organization on Tristinika is from a beach bar on the north end and a hotel and campsite
on the south end. In the middle of the beach is a small beach bar that also offers sun-beds. The
popular beach bar in the north attracts crowds and has done a good job in creating an atmosphere
that you think you could be in Thailand. Here they serve drinks and food and provide pay
showers for the campers. But beware the price is a little steep.

The beach itself is long and wide with coarse sand like Toroni beach. The water is fantastically
clear and gets deep quickly so you can almost dive in from the shore. Facing south, Tristinika
gets sun for the whole day and entertains with beautiful sunsets.

What’s great about Tristinika Beach

Beautiful sandy beach that can be very quiet in June and September. Beach bar that is very unique.

And what’s not…

A little difficult to get to and not so organized for food options. Deep water so watch the children.

Driving north of Toroni you will see a sign for Tristinika beach. Follow the road for a couple of kilometers,
it turns into a dirt road and leads to the north end of the beach where you can find parking.

Paradise beach
Paradise beach is north of Toroni and just south of Aretes beach. This is a beautiful sandy beach
with a southerly disposition and is protected by the mountain that surrounds it on three sides. Just
a warning that due to its isolation and difficulty in getting to Paradise beach, it is mainly visited
by nudists who set up camp on the beach.

The beach is not developed and requires that you park your car either on the main road or the dirt
road that ends by a private house. From the house you will have a 100 m walk down some steps
to reach the beach.

The beach itself is sandy and wide and perhaps 300 m in length. The sand is fine and the sea
bottom is also sandy. The water is not so deep off the shore and is acceptable for children and
great for swimming. In the middle of the beach is an area of rock shelf.

What’s great about Paradise Beach

Natural beach. Crystal clear water and great sand.
And what’s not…
Difficult to reach without a car. No restaurant of beach bar, just on Aretes beach.

Drive north from Toroni and follow the sign to Tristinika beach and Aretes beach. Pass Tristinika beach
turn off and you pass a taverna and continue straight. The road will then climb the mountain and when
you reach the top you will see a dirt road that turns left. If you reach the hotel parking at the top, you

Aretes beach
Aretes beach north of Toroni is the start of a series of beaches on this coast that are rarely visited.
Here you can still get a taste of what Halkidiki was like 30 years ago. The Aretes beach is
actually a bay with 3 beaches. On the south beach (largest of the three) is a small hotel that
basically has the beach to itself. In between Aretes and Tristinika beach is another undiscovered
beach called Paradise.

The hotel is organized with a taverna in a garden just behind the beach and has a great sea view.
Recently a beach bar was set up in the middle of the beach with sun-beds and umbrellas where
you can get drinks until the morning hours. There is some basic water sport organization here as
well. The other two beaches don’t have any organization.

The main beach is sand. The water has a sand bottom and is good for children as it gradually
deepens, but then drops off. To the north end the water is shallower. The clear water is good for
swimming and snorkeling. The middle beach is much smaller, is also a sand beach with shallow
water. The northern most beach is a pebble beach with a pebble seabed. There may be some
nudists on these smaller beaches.
What’s great about Aretes Beach
No crowds and very relaxing. Good for swimming and snorkeling.

And what’s not…

Out of the way, so you need a car. No other shops or restaurants in the area, just the one hotel.

Traveling north from Toroni there is a sign for Tristinika beach and Aretes beach. Follow the signs that

Paradisos beach - Neos Marmaras

Paradisos beach is the north beach of Neos Marmaras. It is a narrow beach that serves the local
hotels and apartments that line the promenade. Here you can find several good restaurants and
beach bars. The beach is well organized with sun beds and parasols.

The beach itself is a combination of sand and pebble, the southern part being more pebble and
the northern part, sandy. The seabottom is also a mix, as you enter the water there is pebble and
stone but then turns to sand. It is recommended that you have swimming shoes for entering the
water. At times there can be waves, but also the beach is patrolled by lifeguards. Paradisos is a
good pick for families.

What’s great about Paradisos Beach

Good family beach. Convenient location for those living here. A few great restaurants where you can
catch the sunset.

Lagomandra beach
Lagomandra beach is actually 2 beaches that are considered ‘Blue Flag’ beaches. Located north
of Neos Marmaras, Lagomandra beach is one of the more popular ones in the area. The beach is
very well set up for water sports and is great if you are looking for some activity.

The large hotels across the road bring many tourists to the beach, so they manage the beach
organization. There is a section on the northern beach that has a beach bar with sun-beds and
umbrellas, the rest of the beach is open. The southern beach is where the water sports is
organized from. There are tavernas just behind the beach in the pine grove.

Both beaches have soft sand and are fantastic for swimming and floating on your air mattress.
The northern beach gets deeper more quickly and the southern beach is shallower. The pine
grove is a nice plus, as it offers shade while you can still be on the sand.

What’s great about Lagomandra Beach

Well organized for water sports and good for children. Restaurants are also close by. You can enjoy
beautiful sunsets from this beach.

Agios Ioannis beach

Agios Ioannis will definitely catch your eye. Driving past on the road, especially from the south,
you get a perfect view of this incredible beach that stretches on for about a kilometer. The
aquamarine water looks so inviting that you just want to stop and take a dip.

Agios Ioannis beach is organized with a couple of beach bars that provide sun-beds, umbrellas
and of course the music. The far end has been a popular caravan park where many stop for free
camping, but since 2016 it seems to have been closed off and is being prepared for resort
development.

The beach has beautiful sand and the seafloor is also sandy, just be aware of some large rocks in
parts. For a quieter rest, head to the far end of the beach where caravans are parked, here you get
the same deal but just quieter. The water is nice and clear and since the beach faces south you get
sun the whole day long.

What’s great about Agios Ioannis

The end by the main road is the party place and the far end is the quiet part. It’s a large beach that
doesn’t get over crowded.

And what’s not…

Metamorfosi beach is a chain of beaches that mark the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula. The
main ‘Blue Flag’ beach is in the village of Metamorfosi, but as you continue moving west there
are many smaller organized beaches that are part of hotels or organized by beach bars. These are
all considered the same beach.

The parts of Metamorfosi beach that are organized by the hotels provide sun-beds and umbrellas,
beach bars and restaurants. The village of Metamorfosi also has shops, mini markets and
restaurants.

These beaches are mainly a mix of sand and pebble and the water is clear and good for
swimming. There may be rocks in places so bring water shoes. There are lots of pines along the
beach giving a good aroma.

What’s great about Metamorfosi Beach

If you are adventurous, you may find a small splash of sand as your own private beach.

And what’s not…
