ISSU 0018 Understanding Management: Summer School

Coursework
The summer school coursework comes in two parts:
- Two group assignments based on The Ambassadors Hotel in Bloomsbury;
- An individual piece of work that has two parts: the evaluation of a failing company, and what
it can do to put itself right.
The purpose of the coursework is to ensure that everything that we have covered over the
programme is assessed and evaluated, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the summer
school. The coursework therefore gives you both practice and also experience in developing and
applying the concepts taught, and the expertise that is founded in these concepts.

Part one Group Presentations

You have two presentations to do on the Ambassadors Hotel case as follows.
1. Working on a current business issue with which you will be presented, you have 4 hours to
research, define and deliver a business analysis about the Ambassadors Hotel, in accordance
with the brief issued on the day. You are then required to deliver a 10-15 minute
presentation stating your evaluation and recommendations.
This presentation is to be delivered on Wednesday 10 July 2019

2. In your groups, you are to produce a group presentation centred on specific issues faced by
the hotel as follows. The presentation should cover the following:
 a brief statement of the strategy of the company, and its strengths and weaknesses;
 a detailed statement of how you would recommend that the company develop and extend
the products that it offers, with full rationale; with detailed costings and detailed
recommendations.

This presentation is to be delivered on the morning of Thursday, 18 July 2019. The presentation
itself should last between 10-15 minutes, and there will be time for questions afterwards (see full
brief and detailed instructions). You will need to produce a poster and powerpoint (or equivalent)
presentation, plus supporting documentation.

Total Mark for Both Presentations: 30%

Part two Individual coursework

In the recent and immediate past, the motor car manufacturing industry has struggled with
direction, priorities and responsibilities. It has struggled especially to decide whether to try and go
green, whether it is producing cars for sale or rental or usage, and it has struggled also in trying to
develop key initiatives such as driverless cars, the smart city, and integrated transport networks.

You need to answer these matters in two parts. You need to state the overall challenges that each of
the above issues bring with them. You then need to focus on what ONE company is doing in any ONE
of these areas. You need to make recommendations as to how the company could develop its own
position in these matters, and state clearly the reasons and reasoning behind those
recommendations. Length 2500 words (70%) To be handed in by 9am on Friday, 19th July 2019.
