• To gain basic understanding of various engineering structures in equilibrium.
• To develop knowledge regarding physical phenomena in mathematical terms
Course Outline:
Equilibrium. Mechanical systems, isolation and equilibrium equations for two and three
dimensional systems, free body diagram, two force and three force members.
Structures. Plane trusses, method of joints, method of sections, frames and machine

1. A rocket has a mass of 250 x 103 slugs on earth. Specify (a) its mass in SI units
and (b) its weight in SI units. If the rocket is on the moon, where the acceleration
due to gravity is 6.30 ft/s2, determine to three significant figures (c) its weight in
SI units and (d) it’s mass in SI units.
2. If a car is traveling at 55mil/hr. determine its speed in kilometers per hour and
meters per second.
3. The pascal (Pa) is actually a very small unit of pressure. To show this, convert 1
Pa = 1 N/m2 to lb/ft2. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.7/in 2. How many
Pascals is this?
4. What is the weight in newton’s of an object that has a mass of: (a) 10 kg, (b) 0.5 g,
and (c) 4.50 Mg? Express the result to three significant figures. Use an appropriate
prefix.
5. Evaluate each of the following to three significant figures and express each
answer in Sl units using an appropriate prefix:
(a) 354 mg (45 km) /(0.0356 kN), (b) (0.004 53 Mg)(201 ms), and
(c) 435 MN/23.2 mm.
6. The specific weight (wt./ vol.) of brass is 520 lb/ft 3. Determine its density (mass
/vol.) in SI units. Use an appropriate prefix.
7. Convert each of the following to three significant figures: (a) 20 lb.ft to N.m (b)
4500 lb/ft3 to kN/m3, and (c) 15 ft /h to mm /s.
10. Determine the mass in kilograms of an object that has a weight of (a) 20 mN, (b)
150 kN, and (c) 60 MN. Express the answer to three significant figures.

1. Two forces are applied to an eye bolt fastened to a beam. Determine the
magnitude and direction of their resultant using (a) the parallelogram law, (b) the
triangle rule.
2. Two control rods are attached at A to lever AB. knowing that the force in the left-
hand rod is F1= 120 N, determine (a) the required force F2 in the right-hand rod if the
resultant of the forces exerted by the rods on the lever is to vertical (b) the
corresponding magnitude of FR.
3. Two forces are applied as shown to a hook support. Knowing that the magnitude
of P is 35 N, determine by (a) the required angle α if the resultant of the two forces
applied to the support is to be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of
resultant.
4. The cable stays AB and AD help support pole AC. Knowing that the tension is
500 N in AB and 160 N in AD, determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant
of the forces exerted by the stay satA using (a) the parallelogram law, (b) the triangle

10. A barge is pulled by two tugboats. If the resultant of the forces exerted by the

by the guy wires AC and AD. Knowing that the tension in wire AD is 85 lb, determine
(a) the components of the force exerted by this wire on the pole, (b) the angles θ x, θy,
θz that the force forms with the coordinate axes.
15. A transmission tower is held by three guy wires anchored by bolts at B, C, and D.
If the tension in wire AB is 525 lb, determine the components of the force exerted by
the wire on the bolt at B.

1. The uniform crate shown in Fig. has a mass of 20 kg. If a force P = 80 is applied to
the crate, determine if it remains in equilibrium. The coefficient of static friction is µs
= 0.3.
2. It is observed that when the bed of the dump truck is raised to an angle of θ = 25° the
vending machines will begin to slide off the bed, as shown in Fig. Determine the
static coefficient of friction between a vending machine and the surface of the truck

3. The refrigerator has a weight of 180 lb and rests on a tile floor for which µs = 0.25.
