Lesson Idea Name: It’s All Fun and Games

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 8th

Content Standard Addressed:

✓ MGSE8.G.1: Students can use the properties of translation, rotations, and reflection on line
segments, angles, parallel lines or geometric figures.
✓ MGSE8.G.2: Students can show and explain two figures are congruent using transformations.
✓ MGSE8.G.3: Students can determine the new coordinate of a figure given dilation, translation,
rotation, or reflection.
✓ MGSE8.G.4: Students can describe transformations and/or dilations that produce similar figures.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor

✓ 3a. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources
for their intellectual or creative pursuits.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The lesson addresses the three principals of Universal Design for Learning – representation,
expression, and engagement. The lesson allows groups various ways of acquiring information and knowledge
through BrainPOP wide selection of informational features. Learners can create their game using tools

provided by the teacher or an interactive game in BrainPOP. The lesson allows students to create something
they like which should increase motivation. Furthermore, the lesson provided a variety of tools that are both
low and hi-tech which will provide more access to a variety of learners.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will be implemented after a preassessment on geometric transformation and students will
be differentiated by their proficiency level. Each group will be tasked with researching geometric
transformation through BrainPOP’s Math Movie Topics. After completing their research, each team will
create, play, and assess a math game that is designed to apply and reinforce geometric transformation
concepts – reflection, translation, and rotation.
I will check-out one of the iPad carts and provide the necessary materials, such as poster boards,
markers, dice, graphing paper for groups to create their games. Students can also use BrainPOP’s GameUp to
create their game. We will take 3 class periods to work on the assignment:
• Day 1: Introduction to lesson goals, objectives, and outcomes and provide a tutorial on BrainPOP
• Day 2 – Day 3: Groups will research geometric transformation. I will provide assistance and guidance
on their research and development of game
Additionally, I will provide the students an additional week that they can work at home before the will need
to present their final product to the class.
For the remainder of the Unit, each student will present their game and allow their peers to play as
part of the day’s lesson opening. During the Unit Summative, students write a summary, feedback, and self-
reflection on the project.
• What did they learn from creating the game?
• What did they learn from play the other games?
• What was successful, needs improve, or they would do differently?

Reflective Practice:
The lesson provides a fun, interactive way for the students to learn about geometric transformation.
To further extend the lesson, we can store the games to use a fun review tools when we move to a unit that
builds upon the standards of Unit 1.
