Contribuye al incremento de la resistencia en edades > 7 d.
Cristales comúnmente anhedrales-subhedrales, a veces bien redondeados (10-40 µm).
Ligeramente coloreado en SD (marrón, amarillo o verde).
Sus cristales pueden aparecer bien esparcidos o como agrupaciones (clusters).

Aporta poca resistencia. No obstante, es necesario como fundente para reducir temperatura de formación del clinker.
El color del cemento endurecido (gris) se debe a la presencia de hidratos de ferrita.
Intersticial (toma la forma que le permiten adoptar los constituyentes adyacentes), también puede ocurrir como pequeños
cristales prismáticos o material fibroso.
Alta birrefringencia.
Pleocroico (ámbar pálido a marrón rojizo oscuro o verde oscuro a casi opaco).

No es un componente del clinker pero puede ser añadido al clinker en la etapa de molienda,
convirtiéndose de esta forma en un esencial pero discreto constituyente del cemento.
El C3A reacciona inmediatamente con el agua haciendo que éste fragüe al instante, para evitarlo, se
añade yeso que reacciona con el aluminato produciendo etringita.
