DESIGN OF DLRB AT KM 10.100 OF KISTAPUR CANAL
KONDAPOCHAMMA SAGAR.
INTRODUCTION
The Alignment of t Main Canal crosses the BT from NARASAMPALLE TO MALKAPUR ROAD
. 10.1 where a Double Lane Road Bridge with 7.5m carriage width is Proposed in the LS and
survey plan. Hence the Design is taken up according to the relevant I.R.C codes & MOST
Drawings.

HYDRAULIC PARTICULARS OF CANAL:

SNO DESCRIPTION PARTICULARS UNITS
1 Discharge 0.960 / 0.965 Cumecs
2 Bed Width 2.100 m
3 Full Supply of depth 0.700 m
4 Side Slopes 1.5 :1
5 Bed Fall 1 in 6000
6 Value of Rugosity 0.018
7 Free Board 0.300 m
8 Velocity 0.438 m/sec
9 Top width of Banks (L/R) 1.50 / 4.00 m
10 CBL + 567.333 m
11 FSL + 568.033 m
12 TBL + 568.333 m
13 GL + 572.152 m
14 Proposed Road Level + 572.160 m

ROAD LEVEL

The GL / RL is 4.827 m higher than CBL @ the road crossing. Hence the road level is fixed at GL
i.e., + 572.16 m.

VENT WAY & AFFLUX

The Bottom of deck is + 571.327. The Width of canal at this level is 14.106 m. Hence 2 vents of
8.4 m clear span are proposed with Intermediate P.C.C. pier. Width at FSL is 4.2m.The area of
obstruction due to one pier is 0.7 m² which results an afflux of 2.975cm at the structure which is
less than 3cm and can be allowed.

SCOUR DEPTH
Mean depth of scour (DSM) is worked out adopting the formula
DSM = 1.34 x Db 2 (1/3)

Ksf
where Db = discharge/m width,
Ksf = silt factor and
DSM = Mean Scour depth.
The Mean Scour depth works out to 0.366 m adopting a silt factor '4.75'. The maximum Scour
depth works out to 0.8 m with 2.0 factor of safety. The corresponding level of scour is + 567.233.
The Pier foundation is fixed at 1.5 m below C.B.L. i.e., @ +565.833. For the Abutment foundations
level is proposed at + 567.57 because they are fully buried and away from side slope.

2
ABUTMENT
The abutments are proposed in CC M15 grade concrete with 40mm MSA well graded 600mm thick
foundation block in CC M15 grade with 40mm MSA well graded.

RETURNS AND PARAPET

The returns are designed for saturated earth pressures due to back fill soils computed as per TVA
procedure. 1.2 m height of surcharge over back fill soils are considered. They are proposed to be
constructed in VCCM20. The maximum stress at the base is 19.165 t/m² and on soil it is 4.576 t/m².
parapet walls of 825 mm height above road level are proposed on either side of road above the
returns. they are also proposed in vCCM20 using 40 MSA.

DECK SLAB
The reinforcement details of deck are proposed to be adopted from M.O.S.T drawings No. SD/101
to SD/122. The deck is proposed in VRCC M25 upto 9.0m span & VRCC M30 for 10m span in
moderate condition. 20 mm thick simple expansion joints are proposed at the free ends of deck over
abutments. The joints are proposed to filled with Asphaltic joint filler. The bearing surfaces on bed
blocks over Abutments and Pier are to be rubbed smooth with Carborandum stones and a thick
Kraft paper be laid over it before casting the deck.

APPROACH AND APPROACH SLAB

15 m straight approaches to be formed on either side of bridge. 3500 mm length approach slab of
150 mm thick is to be laid on either side of bridge in VRCC M25 using 12 mm Ø bars @ 160 c/c
both ways @ top & bottom . The approach slab to be laid over 225 mm thick well compacted
gravel base.

As per clause 10.6.2.1 of IRC : 5-1998, minimum vertical clearance should be 450 mm

Vertical Clearance = 0.450 m

0.750 m at Crown & at edge 0.750 m

GL is heigher than TBL @ the crossing. Hence no need to increase the RL.

Vertical clearance = 571.327 - 568.033 = 3.294

> 0.45 Hence OK
Hence increase the RL by = 0.000 m
i.e R.L = 572.152 + 0.000 = 572.152
Say = 572.160 m
CHECK FOR MIN. ROAD/DRAIN LEVEL : -
Min road/drain level required = F.S.L + V.C + slab thickness + wearing coat

Road Level = + 572.160 > + 572.152
So Proposed Road Level = 572.160 M Hence OK

Live load & live load bending moment calculations

As per IRC: 21-2000, from clause 305.16.2, for a single concentrated load, the effetctive width may be calculated
in accordance with the following equation

bef = α x a x { 1- a / lo } + b1

bef = The effective width of slab on which load acts

lo = The effective span

b = Width of the slab

a = The distance of the centre of gravity of the concentrated load from the nearer support

b1 = The breadth of concentrated area of the load, i.e., the dimension of the tyre or track
contact area over the road surface of the slab in a direction at right angles to the span
plus twice the thickness of the wearing coat or surface finish above the structural slab

α = A constant having the following values depending upon the ratio b / lo, where b is the
width of the slab

b / lo = 13000 / 8790
= 1.479

b / lo = 1.40 → α = 2.8
b / lo = 1.50 → α = 2.84

2.Design of the DirtWall :

Height of the dirt wall 'H” = 0.600 m
Earth pressure at the bottom of the dirt wall Epre = 0.333 x H x ø
= 0.333 x 0.600 x 31
= 6.194 KN/m2
Neglecting the vertical component of the load to be on conservative side
Horizontal load on the wall/m length of the wall = 0.5 x Epre x H
= 0.500 x 6.194 x 0.600
= 1.858 KN/m
Moment at the bottom of the dirt wall
= 1.858 x 0.500 x 0.600 = 0.557 KN m/m
Surcharge pressure on the wall Spre = 0.333 x 1.2 x ø
= 0.333 x 1.200 x 31
= 12.388 KN/m2
Surcharge load on the dirt wall Sload = Spre x H
= 12.388 x 0.600
7.433 KN/m
Moment at the bottom of the dirt wall M = 0.5 x Sload x H
= 0.500 x 7.433 x 0.600
2.230 KN m/m

Total design moment at the bottom of the dirt wall = 2.230 + 0.557
= 2.787 KN m/m

Hence the provided section is adequate

Area of steel required = BM/σst x j x d

Check for shear

One way shear: Critical section is at 'd' from face of the pier
Depth at a distance 'd' from the face of pier with 0.6m depth at edge = 0.5320 m
Percent of steel Pt = 100 x 5.66 /( 100 x 53.20 ) = 0.106 %
for Pt 0.106 % allowable shear stress in concrete = 1.63 Kg/cm²
Shear strength = 1.63 x 100 x 53.20 /1000 = 8.672 t
Which is more than 1.658 t , design shear
hence safe

Two way shear: Critical section is at 'd/2' from face of the pier
Design shear = 392.23 t
Perimeter at 'd/2' critical section
= 2x( ( 1.000 + 0.532 )+( 14.14 + 0.532 = 32.399 m
Area = 32.399 x 0.532 = 17.236 m²
Shear resistance = 17.2362 x 105 x 0.16 x sqrt 20 = 1233.322 t
