for the building to protect against attack by subterranean termites by suitable chemical
treatment measure.
2. ACCESS/EGRESS
a) Proper access and egress will be ensured before and till completion of work.
b) Temporary signage will be provided at access and egress. Approaches and exits
shall be clearly defined by barricades and warning/caution signs.

5.RESPONSIBILITIES
The equipment engaged for works shall be checked and approved by P&M Department.
a) Pressure Pumps
b) Sprayer arrangement (hand)
c) Measuring Jar
d) Containers and drum
e) Mild Steel Rod 12 mm dia (for rodding hole)
7. MATERIALS
A. Manpower
a) Safety and health induction shall be conducted by the SHE Manager/ Engineer prior to
commencement of works to all personnel involved as per the approved SHE Plan
(DFCCIL/DOC/CP-303/SHE-002 rev 04).
b) All personnel will wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (safety shoes,
helmet, safety sun glasses and high visibility safety jacket) as per the SHE plan.
c) During peak hours in summer season, suitable measures shall be taken to avoid any
heat stroke, suffering due to peak temperature of the day to the workers.
d) All work at site will be carried out in accordance with this method statement (Risk
assessment attached).
e) The Construction Manager/Site Engineer responsible for the job will be present at site
during working hours and will implement SHE control measures against risks identified
on site and a safety engineer will monitor all activities. A site briefing will take place
before works commencement. Any incident, injury, and near miss will be reported
immediately to the L&T Project management and SYSTRA/DFCCIL
B. Equipment
a) All equipment shall be inspected by the L&T SHE/ Plant Department prior to work.
b) The operators will also practice a daily visual inspection to their equipment prior to
start work.
c) Those inspections will be implemented as per L&T equipment procedure.
C. Environmental Protection
a) All personnel should apply Health and Sanitation requirements to themselves and
maintain a good housekeeping on site as per the L&T SHE plan (DFCCIL/DOC/CP-
303/SHE-002 rev 04).
b) Oil spillage from motorized equipment shall be avoided by placing adequate
catch/retention basin in the work site.
c) Dust shall be controlled by spraying water on regular basis. Goggles and dust masks
will be used where dust is generated.
d) Controls will be utilized in accordance with the Project EMP.
D. Welfare arrangements
a) Drinking water will be provided in the site offices and the workers rest area.
b) Shaded areas will be provided for staff and workers to take rest and food.
c) Ablution Containers will be provided for staff and workers near the rest areas.
d) First-Aid kits will be available with the site engineer/ first-aider.
e) At least two personnel on the site will hold at least the one-day first-aid competency.
f) The site team shall also hold a First-Aid kit within the vehicle.
A. General
1. Storage of Material:
a) Chemical Containers shall be kept under sealed conditions in lockable store/ shaded
area (as identified).
b) Empty containers should be disposed from the site immediately and a separate log to
be maintained for empty containers
2. Chemical Preparation:
3. Application Method
a) Chemical emulsion shall be applied uniformly at prescribed rate in all the stages of
treatment.
b) Application of chemical emulsion shall be done using hand operated pressure pump.
c) Ensure uniform spraying of chemical to facilitate proper coverage and penetration.
d) Chemical emulsion shall be applied by trained worker in accordance to manufacture's
recommendation.
B. Treatment sequence:
a) Soil Treatment:
Treating the soil beneath the building and around the foundations with a soil insecticide is
a preventive measure. The purpose of treatment is to create the barrier between the ground
from where termites come and wood work or other cellulosic materials in the buildings.
The chemical emulsions Lindane 20 EC/Chlorpyrifos shall be applied uniformly at the
prescribed rate in all the stage of treatment.
In the case of RCC foundations, the concrete is dense being a 1:2:4 (cement: fine
aggregates: coarse aggregates, by volume) mix or richer, the termites are unable to
penetrate it, it is therefore, unnecessary to start the treatment from the bottom of
excavations. The treatment shall start at a depth of 500 mm below the ground level except
when such ground level is raised or lowered by filling or cutting after the foundations have
been cast. In such cases, the depth of 500 mm shall be determined from the new soil level
resulting from the filling or cutting mentioned above, and soil in immediate contact with
the vertical surfaces of RCC foundations shall be treated at the rate of 7.5 I/m2.
The top surface of the consolidated earth within plinth walls shall be treated with chemical
emulsion at the rate of 5 l/m2 of the surface before the sand bed or sub-grade is laid. If the
filled earth has been well rammed and the surface does not allow the emulsion to seep
through, holes up to 50 to 75 mm deep at 150 mm centres both ways maybe made with 12
mm diameter mild steel rod on the surface to facilitate saturation of the soil with the
chemical emulsion.
Special care shall be taken to establish continuity of the vertical chemical barrier on inner
wall surface from ground level (where it had stopped with the treatment described in 7.2.2)
up to the level of the filled earth surface. To achieve this, a small channel 30 mm x 30 mm
shall be made at all the junctions of wall and columns with the floor (before laying the
sub-grade) the rod holes made in the channel up to the ground level 150 mm apart and the
iron rod moved backward and forward to break up the earth and chemical emulsion poured
along the wall at the rate of 7.5 l/m2 of vertical wall or column surface so as to soak the
soil right to the bottom. The soil should be tamped back into place after the operation.
After the building is complete, the earth along the external perimeter of the building should
be rodded at intervals of 150 mm and to a depth of 300 mm. The rods should be removed
backward and forward parallel to the wall to break up the earth and chemical emulsion
poured along the wall at the rate of 7.51 l/sqm of vertical surfaces. After the treatment, the
earth should be tamped back into place. The earth outside the building should be graded
and treatment should be carried out on completion of building. In the event of filling more
than 300 mm, the external perimeter treatment shall extend to the full depth of filing upto
ground level so as to ensure continuity of the chemical barrier.
When pipes, wastes and conduits enter the soil inside the area of foundations, soil
surrounding the point of entry shall be loosened around each such pipe, waste or conduit
for a distance of 150 mm and to a depth of 75 mm before treatment is commenced. When
they enter the soil external to the foundations, they shall be similarly treated at a distance
of over 300 mm unless they stand clear of the walls of the building by about 75mm.
