Abstract
During the old days, communication was only limited to talking to a person in the
same room and writing and waiting to receive a letter. Thanks to the rapid development
of new technologies during the past years. Today, talking or sending a message to a
person in real time, while staying on different countries, is now possible. From the word
tele, which means at a distance, and communication the word “telecommunication" was
formed.

Introduction
Before the emergence of the Internet and other data networks,
telecommunications had a clear meaning: the telephone was an application of
technology that allowed people to communicate at a distance by voice, and telephone
service was provided by the public switched telephone network. Today consumers think
of telecommunications in terms of both products and services.

The technologies used for telecommunications have changed greatly over the last
50 years. Empowered by research into semiconductors and digital electronics in the
telecommunications industry, analog representations of voice, images, and video have
been supplanted by digital representations. The biggest consequence has been that all
types of media can be represented in the same basic form and therefore handled
uniformly within a common infrastructure.

Wired communication refers to the transmission of data over a wire-based

communication technology. Examples include telephone networks, cable television or
internet access, and fiber-optic communication. Also, waveguide (electromagnetism),
used for high-power applications, is considered as wired line. Local telephone networks
often form the basis for wired communications that are used by both residential and
business customers in the area. Most of the networks today rely on the use of fiber-optic
communication technology as a means of providing clear signaling for both inbound and
outbound transmissions.

2
TELEPHONE MODULAR JACK

Location: Suntrust Parkview

Description:
It is also known as a modular
connector socket. This is where the
telephone plug/connector is
inserted for the subscribers to
access the telephone service. The
most common jack is the RJ
(Registered Jack) 11 socket.

LINE SPLITTER

Location: Suntrust Parkview

Description:
The ADSL splitter is a device used to
prevent interference problems. It is often
seen at home when you subscribe to a
telephone plan which comes with ADSL
services. It works by filtering the low
frequencies of the telephone line from the
high frequency ADSL line. The telephone
line goes to your telephone while the ADSL
line connects to the MODEM.

3
POWER CABLE
Location: Mapua University, Muralla St,
Intramuros, Manila

Description:
A power cable is an electrical cable, an
assembly of one or more electrical
conductors, usually held together with an
overall sheath. The assembly is used for
transmission of electrical power to
different devices.

FLATPACK S 48V 1U

Location: Mapua University, Muralla St,

Intramuros, Manila

Description:
Telecom and wireless networks typically
operate on 48-volt DC power. Also,
increasing network speed demands
flexible and expandable DC power
solutions. Due to its small size, high
efficiency, reliability and wide range of
communication, the Flatpack S System is
the key for future needs. The shallow
depth makes the system suitable for most
cabinets and thereby excellent as a
replacement unit.
4
BASE TRANSCEIVER STATION (BTS)

Location: Mapua University, Muralla St, Intramuros, Manila

Description:
It facilitates wireless communication between user equipment (UE) and a network.
UEs are devices like mobile phones (handsets), WLL phones, computers with wireless
Internet connectivity. The network can be that of any of the wireless communication
technologies like GSM, CDMA, wireless local loop, Wi-Fi, WiMAX or other wide area
network (WAN) technology.

5
NETWORK INTERFACE DEVICE

Location: Solana St. Intramuros, Manila

Description:
Network interface device serves as a demarcation point between the carrier's local
loop and the customer's von-premises wiring. It is where the data wires end and a
customer's home wiring starts. Technically, phone companies are responsible for
maintaining the wiring up to the network interface device, while customers are
responsible for the wiring after this point.

6
TELEPHONE LINES

Location: Solana St. Intramuros, Manila

Description:
Telephone lines is a single-user circuit on a telephone
communication system. This is the physical wire or other
signaling medium connecting the user's telephone
apparatus to the telecommunications network, and
usually also implies a single telephone number for billing
purposes reserved for that user. Telephone overhead
lines are connected to the public switched telephone
network.

FIBER OPTIC CABLE

Location: Mapua University, Muralla St,

Intramuros, Manila

Description:
An optical fiber cable, also known as a fiber
optic cable, is an assembly similar to an
electrical cable, but containing one or more
optical fibers that are used to carry light. The
optical fiber elements are typically individually
coated with plastic layers and contained in a
protective tube suitable for the environment
where the cable will be deployed.

7
RJ11

Location: Suntrust Parkview, Manila

Description:
A telephone plug is a type of connector
used to connect a telephone set to the
telephone wiring inside a building,
establishing a connection to a telephone
network. A connection standard, such as
RJ11, specifies not only the physical
aspects of an electrical connector, but
also the pinout, i.e. the assignment or
function of each contact.

POWER OVER ETHERNET SWITCH

Location: Suntrust Parkview,

Manila

Description:
A POE switch is a network switch
that has Power over Ethernet
injection built-in. Simply connect
other network devices to the
switch as normal, and the switch
will detect whether they are POE-
compatible and enable power
automatically.

8
TELEPHONE

Image of Telephone

Switch

Location: Suntrust Parkview, Manila

Description:
The telephone is a telecommunications
device that permits two or more users to
conduct a conversation when they are
too far apart to be heard directly. A
telephone converts sound, typically and
most efficiently the human voice, into
electronic signals that are transmitted via
cables and other communication
Handset
channels to another telephone which
reproduces the sound to the receiving
user.

9
ROUTER
Location: Suntrust Parkview, Manila

Description:
A router is a small electronic device
that join multiple computer networks
together via either wired or wireless
connections. They function as
special-purpose computers, one that
does not require a keyboard or
display.

OUTDOOR TV ANTENNA

Location: Intramuros, Manila

Description:
An outdoor television antenna has a
unidirectional radiation pattern so the correct
end of the antenna must be pointed at the TV
station. The received television signal passes
down a feed line (transmission line) into the
house to the television.

10
MODEM

Location: Intramuros, Manila

Description:
A modem converts digital data
signals into modulated analog
signals suitable for transmission
over analog telecommunications
circuits. It receives modulated
signals and demodulates them,
recovering the digital signal for use
by the data equipment.

MANHOLE Location: Suntrust, Manila

Description:
a small covered opening in a floor,
pavement, or other surface to allow a
person to enter, especially an opening in
a city street
