ASHISH GODBOLE’S CASE

Situation Analysis: Ashish godbole has a passion for Marketing since he was persuing his MBA and
wanted to make a career in it. But during campus placements, he was refused a job by marketing
companies due to his degrees in IT and advance courses in MIS and was advised to work in an IT firm. He
had to join Septra Foods pvt.ltd in its MIS division, in a hope to get into the company’s marketing and
sales department at later stage with some knowledge and experience of the company’s distribution
network. Under Mr. Krishnamurthy’s mentorship, Ashish quickly learned abou MIS and earned the
respect and admiration of his fellow and senior workers. His report on a modified model of the
company’s current MIS was well appreciated, even by the MD, Mr. Brijesh Tandon. Even after all the
praise for his good job, Ashish was still looking for a role in marketing. He finally had an opportunity to
work as an assistant sales manager in the newly formed Septra Food’s edible oil division. He eagerly
volunteered to join it and grabbed the opportunity coming his way.

But Ashish’s performance was found not of the standards as was expected from him. His shy nature and
reluctance to go out and meet the dealers, making personal report, irked the sales manager, Mr.
Bhujbal. It looked that Ashish was unable to handle the company’s sales and distribution network. He
was further pressurized by Bhujbal’s crude behavior towards him, who was not happy with his
performance. Bhujbal was also bit skeptical to his experience in MIS and felt that Ashish is not suitable
for current position. After six grilling months he was asked to go out of the marketing division. Mr.
Krishnamurthy took him back to MIS, where Ashish started creating further problems. His uncontrolled
behavior was disturbing Mr. Krishnamurthy and he had written a strong worded letter to the MD,
complaining about Ashish’s behavior. Ashish, also looks fed up with the situation and searching openings
outside.

Objective: The objective of Spectra food ltd. Is that Ashish Godbole‘s is retained. Good relations
between Ashish and Krishnamurthy should be back so that the company’s functioning is not affected.

Problem Identification: The problem company faces is twofold. One, Ashish has had a tough six
months, the frustration with which has compounded on him and as a result he is behaving badly. Two,
since Ashish has decided to resign, the company may lose an efficient and experienced employee who
can be useful asset for MIS division.

Criteria: There are two criterions for the company

1. Trying to resolve the conflict between Ashish Godbole and Krishnamurthy.

2. Prevent Ashish from leaving the organization.
3. Preventing further problems in the organization due to Ashish’s behavior, which can be
achieved by counseling.
Alternatives: There are three broad alternatives the company can adopt.

1. Allow Ashish Godbole to leave the company.

2. Reprimand Mr. Bhujbal for his hard and behavior and ask him to re assign the assistant manager
(Sales) post to Ashish.
3. Persuade Ashish to remain in the organization.

Evaluation of Alternatives:

1. Allow Ashish to Leave the Company: Fed up with his bad experience in the company in the past
few months, Ashish has decided to resign. The company can let frustrated Ashish to leave. Since
a discontented employee is more of a liability than an asset, it is in the company’s interest to let
him go. But since Ashish is an otherwise efficient and well-mannered worker, it does not make
sense to let him go. Also, losing an experienced employee like Ashish would mean hiring a new
person and train him again, that could be hard for the company to cover/compensate. Hence,
this alternative is not feasible.

2. Reprimand Bhujbal/Reinstate Ashish in Marketing: Ashish had an unpleasant time in

marketing division largely due to the contempt with which the senior manager, Mr. Bhujbal
treated him. He would scold and punish him for not being upfront in making contacts and
getting close regarding the delivery process. Bhujbal looks to have a personal bias against
Ashish, and his rude behavior could be due of this fact. Bhujbal could be asked to take Ashish
back in his position and be patient and with time, rectify his shortcomings. But, marketing is a
tough field and requires constant movement which does not suit Ashish, he being shy and
introvert, it is unreasonable to expect him to do well. Hence, this alternative too, can be ruled
out.

3. Persuade/Counsel Ashish to remain in the Organisation: Ashish Godbole has had few tough 6-8
months in the organization. He was thrown out of a division he thought was tailor made to work
in. This hurt his self- esteem and confidence. With frustrated and irritating behavior he showed
later that he was a direct result of this anger. It is in the company’s best interests to make Ashish
regain his self-esteem and make him realize his importance to the company. Ashish and
Krishnamurthy should also be made to talk and sort out their differences.

Selecting the Best Alternative: From the above evaluations, it is apparent that only alternative three
fits the criterions. Ashish Godbole must be persuaded and counseled to stay with the company.

Implementation Plan: The plan can be implemented through a direct conversation between
Krishnamurthy and Ashish Godbole. Also, Ashish had now realized that his rough words did hurt
Krishnamurthy and that he must apologize to his mentor. Since the two of them have shared a close
bond over the years, it must not be a problem for them to reconcile.
