Idea/Approach Details
Improving malaria surveillance in hard to reach areas, #IMR10,
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)
• Data base including basic details
about the people in the area will be
in the server.
• A device (Digital Thermometer)
given to the users with unique
identification for every family in
hard to reach areas will be given
and contains the following
interfaces.
1. Transmitter and receiver: To
transmit the data to the server,
where the algorithm to check for
malaria patterns. The receiver lets
the family know about malaria
infection.
2. Sensors: To measure the
magnitude of fever, chills and
heartbeat rate.
• With the above parameters
measured, this data is processed and
verified to patterns that will cause
malaria.
• Once, the pattern is identified, the
doctors will be informed and sent to
the respective family immediately.
• The interfaces are made simple for
the users to interact.
Use Cases:
1. Consider two persons x and y in a family staying in a hard to reach area.
2. Definition and symptoms: Normal heartbeat rate=[60-90 beats/min]. When affected by malaria, it is close to 100 beats/min. The output
created by the accelerometer during chills is high. The normal human body temperature=98°F and when affected by malaria=[104°F –
107°F]. This temperature repeats after every 48-72 hrs.
3. The device for measuring parameters are made available to the family.
4. x & y are suffering from fever. They use the device to measure the temperature and heartbeat rate. The data is transferred to us and is also
made available for the users.
5. The users take medicines or undergo ayurvedic treatment. With continuous use of the device, the pattern of the fever, heartbeat rate and
chills varying with time is close enough of a person suffering from malaria. While, for y, the boy temperature became normal after 3 days.
6. This result is made available to the family. And further steps are initiated.

Technology Stack:
1. Level 1: Design and calibration of the sensors.
2. Level 2: Big data, C, Python, Assembly level language, Micro controllers.
3. Level 3: IPv4/IPv6, EPC, URI, WIFI, LPWAN, DNS-SD, AMQP and TR-069.
4. Level 4: DBMS, ODBC.

Show Stopper:
1. To handle a large amount of data, a server is required. The wireless transmission has to be uninterrupted.
2. Internet connectivity is an major requirement. Internet is more preferred than SMS or other mode of transmission.
3. The device has to be charged regularly while usage.
