Pedagogy Planning
In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to move fraction pieces
(concrete) to their images (representational) and learn how to add fractions (abstract).
Activity The teacher will use the first few slides of the smart exchange
activity to review the definition of a fraction by reviewing what the
numerator and denominator each stand for. I would change up the
second slide and not give out the explanation “When the
denominators are the same, we can add the numerators,…”. The
teacher will let the students explore this rule by letting single
students drag fraction pieces to the shown fractions. The teacher
will ask guiding questions: “Can we create 1/3 with 1/6 – fraction
pieces? How many 1/6 – pieces fit in 1/3 – piece?” (Slide 5). The
students continue dragging fraction pieces and adding up fractions
with like denominators. At the end of Slide 8, the teacher would ask
the students what rule the student can come up with. The teacher
writes down that two fractions with like denominators can be added
by adding the numerator and keeping the denominator.
The teacher will continue with the slides and the students explore
how to add fractions with unlike denominators by using the
concrete fraction pieces. The teacher will not be explaining the LCD
in this lesson. The teacher will display more addition problems
involving fraction on the board and the students will continue
adding fractions with like and unlike denominators using concrete
manipulatives to find the answer. They will then exchange their
results with a partner or in small groups, before getting together as
