Q1: (a) A plate is 5 meter distant from a fixed plate, moves at 60cm/s and require a shear stress
of 2N/m^2 to maintain this speed. Determine the fluid Viscosity?

Given data: Change of velocity, dv= 60cm/s

Distance between the plates, dy=500cm

Contact area A = 2x2 = 4 m2

Force required, F = 1 N

Now,

Shear stress, = F/A = 0.25N/m2

And,

Answer: 2.083Ns/m^2

(b) A flat plat of area (1.5 x 10^6) mm^2 is pulled with a speed of 0.4m/s relative to another plat
located at a distance of 0.15 mm from it . Find the force and power to maintain this speed?

Q2: (a) Calculate the dynamic viscosity of oil which is used for lubrication between a square
plate of size 1m x1m and an inclined plane with angle of inclination 30 degree as shown in fig.
the weight of square plate is 200N and it slides down the inclined plane with a uniform velocity
of 0.3 m/s. the thickness of oil film is 1.5mm

Answer: 11.7 poise

(b) Find the kinematic viscosity of an oil having density 981kg/m^3 .the shear stress at a point in
oil is 0.2452 N/m^2. And velocity gradient at that point is 0.2 per second

Q3 (a) A hydraulic press has a ram of 20cm diameter and a plunger of 3cm diameter. It is used
for lifting a weight of 30KN.Finf the force required at the plunger.
F/a=W/A
F=(30000*3.142*.02*.02)/(3.142*0.3*0.3)
=133.33 kN.

(b) An open tank contains water up to a depth of 2m and above it an oil of S.G=0.9 for a depth
of 1m. Find the pressure intensity (1) at the interface of the two liquids and (2) at the bottom of
the tank.

Q4. (a) Two pipes on the same elevation convey water and oil of specific gravity 0.88
respectively. They are connected by a U-tube manometer with the manometric liquid having a
specific gravity of 1.25. If the manometric liquid in the limb connecting the water pipe is 2 m
higher than the other find the pressure difference in two pipes.?
(b) Find the gauge pressure in the vessel? Where h1= 0.4m, h2=0.5m , h3= 0.3m
h4= 0.7m, h5= 0.1m , h6=0.5m

Q5(a) A rectangular ship having dimensions length= 17m , width= 5m ,height= 2.5m is
floating on water. When the ship is empty only 0.6m is submerged. When load is placed
on its surface ,the ship submerged up to 2.2m . calculate the mass of the load
(b) A ship sailing in the sea enters a wide and deep river. The density of
seawater is 1100 kg/m3, the density of river water is 1000 kg/m3. Determine
comparison of the volume of the object is in seawater and in river water.
(c) Gold, whose mass is 193 grams is in kerosene having an upward force of 0.08N. If
the acceleration due to gravity is 10 m/s2 and the density of kerosene is 0.8 gr/cm3,
then determine the density of gold.
Q6(a) An underground oil supply line is passing under a stream of canal as shown in fig. It is 68ft
deeper than on either side. when the oil S.G=0.88 is not flowing. what is the oil pressure in line
under the stream. Where P1 is given in fig.

(b) . One end of a 50-meter-long hose is attached to the bottom of a large basin full of water.
How many meters below the top of the basin must the hose outlet be positioned for the water
pressure at the outlet to be 18,000 Pascal ? (neglect the atm P, Density=1000kg/m3)
(c) While diving with a friend, you note that the water pressure at your current depth is 130,000
Pascal. If you swim up another 2.5 meters, what is the water pressure?

Q7(a) The diameters of a pipe at section 1 and 2 are 10cm and 15cm respectively. Find
discharge through the pipe if the velocity of water at section 1 is 5m/s. Also find the velocity at
section 2.
(b) A horizontal pipeline is attached to the wall of reservoir (see fig. 2). The pipeline has
different profiles. The water level in the upper reservoir is in the height H = 1.5 m above the
pipeline axis. From the lower end of the pipeline water flows out to the open space. Diameters
and lengths of pipeline reaches are: D1 = 0.24 m, L1 = 3 m, D2 = 0.1 m, L2 = 1 m, D3 = 0.12 m, L3
= 2 m. Calculate discharge in the pipeline and draw the course of energy line (EL) and pressure
line (PL). Resolve the problem: a) Neglecting losses (i.e. consider the liquid to be ideal)

(b) Water is flowing in a fire hose with a velocity of 1.0 m/s and a pressure of 200000 Pa. At the
nozzle the pressure decreases to atmospheric pressure (101300 Pa), there is no change in
height. Use the Bernoulli equation to calculate the velocity of the water exiting the nozzle.
(Hint: The density of water is 1000 kg/m3 and gravity g is 9.8 m/s2 . Pay attention to units!)]
Q9: (a) Through a refinery, fuel ethanol is flowing in a pipe at a velocity of 1 m/s and a pressure
of 101300 Pa. The refinery needs the ethanol to be at a pressure of 2 atm (202600 Pa) on a
lower level. How far must the pipe drop in height in order to achieve this pressure? Assume the
velocity does not change. (Hint: Use the Bernoulli equation. The density of ethanol is 789 kg/m3
and gravity g is 9.8 m/s2. Pay attention to units!)

(b) An oil of viscosity 0.06 poise and SG= 0.9 is flowing through a pipe of diameter 200mm at
the rate of 60 liters per second. Find the head loss due to friction for a 500m length of pipe.
Find the power to maintain this flow?
Q10 (a) Liquid is flowing through a pipe of 200mm in diameter. Tube with mean velocity of oil
2m/s. If density of fluid is 912kg/m^3, and viscosity is 0.38N.S/m^2 .Find the type of flow?

(b) An oil of velocity (0.5 x 10^-4) m^2/s is flowing through a pipe of 30 cm in diameter at a rate
of 320 liters per second. Find the head loss due to friction for the pipe length of 60 cm.
