I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of: African literature as a means of exploring forces that human
beings contend with; various reading styles vis – à-vis purposes of reading; prosodic features that serve as
carriers of meaning; ways by which information may be organized, related, and delivered orally; and
parallel structures and cohesive devices in presenting information.
B. Performance Standards The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering an informative speech based on a specific
topic of interest keeping in mind the proper and effective use of parallel structures and cohesive devices
and appropriate prosodic features, stance, and behaviour.
C. Learning Competencies EN8V-Ih-6: Determine the meaning of words and expressions that reflect the local culture by noting
context clues.
EN8RC-Ih-7.1 : Read intensively to determine the author’s purpose
EN8LT-Ih-3: Explain how a selection may be influenced by culture, history, environment, or other factors
D. Instructional Objectives At the end of this 1 - hour period, at least 50% of the students who are ready to embrace this 21st-century
teaching will be able to achieve75% proficiency on how to:
1. KNOWLEDGE Determine meaning of words and expression through context clue,
2. SKILL read and understand the story “ The Soul of the Great Bell” and
3. ATTITUDE appreciate the significance of sacrifices for the sake of your l0ve one.

Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904)
known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo was a writer, known best for his books about Japan,
especially his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of
Strange Things. In the United States, Hearn is also known for his writings about the city of New
Orleans based on his ten-year stay in that city.

 Students will watch the video of the summary of the story “The Soul of the Great Bell”
POST READING:

(UNDERSTAND) 1. You have just read the Soul of the Great Bell. Have you noticed the descriptions of the bell?
Draw the description of the bell before and after Ko-ngai sacrifice herself.
3. Sequencing of Events: Arrange the following events using (1-10), write your answer on your paper.
Then, retell the story in your own words.
