The Road to War
& Lesson Plan Title:
TDS Judging Significance

§113.41. United States History Studies Since 1877 (One Credit), Beginning with School
Year 2011-2012. 4) History. The student understands the emergence of the United
TEKS States as a world power between 1898 and 1920. The student is expected to: (C)
identify the causes of World War I and reasons for U.S. entry;

Students will be able to identify the causes of World War I. While also identifying

What were the loudest causes of the Great War and how do they connect to the
Essential Question(s): longer-term issues that caused the Great War? How did other countries view the
start of the war?

YouTube Video called “Who was involved in The Great War (World War I)?” by
Resources/Materials: Simple History, PowerPoint, Laptops or Phones, Markers, Color Pencils, Butcher
Paper or Printing Paper.

Students will start class with a short 4 question quiz asking, “Who was
involved in The Great War (World War I)?”. Which will have all answers Time: 2
be right as its purpose is to get students thinking about the many Min
countries involved.

Students will then color in a map of the countries of Europe based on


their alliances or lack thereof. Time:

Students will watch a short video from YouTube called, “What Caused or
the First World War?”. 2Min
Procedure:
Students will break into groups of 3 or 4 and grab a computer (or use
phones if necessary). Then each group pick a country involved at the
beginning of the war. (Britain, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia,

Belgium, France, Serbia, etc.) After which they will begin research as to

why their country went to war, how they got involved, and their
reasoning. Students will be judging the significances of the various
reasons’ countries decided to join the war.
Once students have finished their research, I will use PowerPoint to
show various examples of wartime posters from these countries during
this time, that serve as a rallying cry for Men to join the military.

Students will then get crayons and markers, and a blank sheet of white
paper or butcher paper. Their group will then be assigned to create a
wartime poster to promote their Men to join their military based on Time:

their county using the research gathered. The final product will be their 15Min
assessment and a gallery walk will be held or have each group present
to the class their poster answering key questions.
