1.6. READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITY Nº1

As you read, underline the words you don’t know and look them up. Then, read the
text again and answer the questions below.

THE 10 BEST SHOPPING CITIES IN THE

WORLD

10. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is overpopulated with shopping

choices. From night markets to shopping malls, your head will spin with
the selection of places to visit, things to see, and shopping to do. In and
around Khaosan Road, you can visit tailors for custom-made clothing,
such as shirts and jackets, and purchase handmade crafts. On the flip
side, massive malls, like MBK Center and Union Mall, trap you in their
endless vortex of stores.

9. Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong is filled with fashionable malls like Pacific Place and Times
Square, and designer outlets that sell everything from Puma to Prada. It's
the spot for jewelry shoppers (you'll definitely get your bling-bling on!),
and it's also a great place for custom-tailoring.

8. London, England

This city is full of history, serves excellent fish and chips, and has
spectacular shopping options. Legendary department stores like Harrods,
Liberty (pictured), Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols are absolute places you
MUST visit. 30

The city is also the perfect place to get lost in, with its charming markets
that sell everything from antiques to clothes; Camden, Covent Garden and
Old Spitalfields are just a few of our favourites to visit when you are
HERE.

7. Madrid, Spain

If you are on vacations in Madrid with your boy- or grillfriend, you’ll need to
stop in Tapas to fuel your shopping extravaganza. Like any major city,
Madrid has an array of big malls (like Principe Pio and ABC Serrano
Centre) that house international brands. However, this picturesque
metropolis is also filled with historical buildings, familiar shops, and
markets like El Rastro, which is said to be one of the oldest and largest
markets in Europe.

6. Milan, Italy

As one of the three fashion capitals in the world, Milan doesn’t need much
explanation as to why you should visit. Black AMEX card holders can go to
town at Via Montenapoleone, an upscale shopping district where you can
walk out of Celine and go straight into the Cartier store. For ladies on a
leaner budget, you can make like the Milanese and head to the designer
outlets, such as Dmagazine Outlet and Il Salvagente.

5. Delhi, India

Tired of massive shopping malls and retail stores? Then travel to Delhi
and explore the city’s endless street markets where you can find
everything from saris to spices and silks. Visit Khan Market to get a made-
to-measure suits for work, or head to Old Delhi to explore its bazaars -- we
recommend Chandni Chowk markets.

We <3 New York! From the Bronx to Manhattan and Staten Island, you
canfind high-end retailers and vintage shops galore. Make sure to pack
comfortable shoes to walk in, because you will easily walk many kilometers.
The recommended areas are: Century 21 for designer deals, Tiffany & Co.

3. Paris, France

In Paris, you can have your Carrie Bradshaw moment, and say, “Bonjour!” .
The places to visit are famous departments stores like Colette, Printemps,

Flea Market, the historic Marais quarter, as well as Avenue Montaigne and
Avenue des Champs-Elysées.

2. Seoul, Korea

This is the home of life-changing beauty products such as BB creams and

the konjac sponge. To say that beauty junkies will be in cosmetics bliss here
would be an understatement: head to Myeongdong for big name brands, or
make your way to Dongdaemun market and Itaewon for a more authentic.

1. Tokyo, Japan

With a population of more than 13.35 million people, Tokyo, Japan has
the shopping chops to match the varied personal styles of its

1.7. Travel Inspiration

A holiday is a day considered for commemoration, celebration, and observance of a

religious or national event; while, a vacation is a day or a number of days for the
purpose of recreation and rest.
Therefore, a holiday is a short period of time that you spend away from work, but a
vacation can be shorter or longer depending on the availability of time. In the UK,
Canada, and Australia, a holiday has the same meaning as a vacation, but in the
US and other parts of the world a holiday and a vacation can refer to two different
things.
A holiday usually involves celebrations and feasts; vacation does not.

In order to complement a description of a place, city or anything else to give more

detailed opinion, you may use a structure called Superlatives. They work
expressing that something or someone possesses the maximum degree in a
determined quality, or to show emphasis.

Its structure is very similar to comparisons, and they can be used together.

1.14. Through the past

When we want to ask something related to the past or express ideas or situations
that already happened, we can use Past Simple structures. Don’t forget that verbs
can be Regular (add -ed / -ied after the verb) or Irregular (they change when
they take the past form, but there isn’t a rule for those changes).

Regular verbs

Travel – Traveled

Stay - Stayed

Play - Played

Study – Studied

“Mario lived in Turkey last month”.

Irregular verbs

Go – Went

Drink - Drank

Leave - Left

Be – Was / Were

“Mario was born in China”.

REMEMBER: past actions change ONLY when you are AFFIRMING something.
NEGATIVE and INTERROGATIVE structures take the past form in the auxiliary
DID.

 AFFIRMING: Some people travelled to China.

 NEGATION: Some people did not (didn’t) travel to China.

 INTERROGATION: Did people travel to China?

1.19. What happened?

It is important to remember that the Past Tense is used for situations that started
and finished in the past. This form can also be used to refer to historical past
events that happened in a distant past.

WORLD WAR II ENDED IN 1945.

ROMANS BUILT STRONG BRIDGES.

Past events can be complemented with words that emphasize the sense of
past. As mentioned before, you can use Adverbs that refer to past events.

ACTIVITIES

26. During the day, Ted attends different classes at university, but in the History
class he gets some homework about important events in the past. Read the
questions, click on the link and answer accordingly.

1.20. Speaking in past

As mentioned before, regular verbs in their past form take a final -ed. However, the
pronunciation of that final “-ed” changes depending on the sound it follows:

 After an unvoiced consonant sounds (sh / s / ch / p / k / f / x ), we pronounce “–

ed” as /t/

Unvoice means that when you pronounce that sound, your vocal cords do not
vibrate.

wash  washed  / wɒʃt /

kiss  kissed  / kɪst /

watch  watched  / wɒtʃt /

Cuaderno de Apuntes

drop  dropped  / drɒpt /

 After a vowel and voiced consonant sounds ( b / g / l / m / n / v / y / n / z), we

pronounce “–ed” as /d/ (For the pronunciation of “voiced” sounds, there is vibration
of the vocal cords).

phone  phoned  / fəʊnd /

turn  turned  / t3rnd /

play  played  / pleɪd /

follow  followed  / fɒləʊd /

 After /t/ and /d/ sounds, we pronounce “–id”

visit  visited  / visitid /

start  started  / stɑrtid /

2. Have you ever tried “raw meat” in your food?

3. What is the typical food in Japan?

TOP 10 FOODS TO TRY IN JAPAN

Japan has a strong cultural identity, and it is a once-in-a-lifetime

holiday destination. The East Asian island is also home to some
deliciously fresh cuisine.

SUSHI

Put simply, sushi is raw fish served on rice seasoned lightly with
vinegar. It’s in the variety of flavours and textures – like tangy,
creamy uni (sea urchin roe) and plump, juicy, ama-ebi (sweet shrimp) –
that things get interesting. Despite sushi’s lofty image, it has a humble
origin: street food.

RAMEN

Ramen, egg noodles in a salty broth, is Japan’s favourite late night

meal. It’s also the perfect example of an imported dish – in this case
from China – that the Japanese have made completely and deliciously
their own. There are four major soup styles: tonkotsu (pork bone), miso,
soy sauce and salt. Fukuoka is particularly famous for its
rich tonkotsu ramen; pungent miso ramen is a specialty of Hokkaido.

UNAGI

Unagi is river eel grilled over charcoal and lacquered with a sweet
barbecue sauce. According to folklore, unagi is the ideal antidote to the
heat and humidity of Japan’s stultifying summers. It’s a delicacy
evocative of old Japan and most restaurants that specialize in eel have
a wonderfully traditional feel. Fresh, wild-caught unagi is available May
through October.

TEMPURA

Light and fluffy tempura is Japan’s contribution to the world of deep-

fried foods (though it likely originated with Portuguese traders). The
batter-coated seafood and vegetables are traditionally fried in sesame
oil and served with either a tiny pool of salt or a dish of soy sauce-
flavoured broth spiked with grated radish for dipping. Do not miss out
on ebi-ten (tempura prawns).

SOBA

96

Vicerrectoría Académica
Cuaderno de Apuntes

Soba – long, thin buckwheat noodles – has long been a staple of

Japanese cuisine, particularly in the mountainous regions where hardy
buckwheat fares better than rice. The noodles are served in either a
hot, soy sauce-flavoured broth or at room temperature on a bamboo
mat with broth on the side for dipping. Purists, who bemoan soup-
logged noodles, prefer the latter.

OKONOMIYAKI

Literally “grilled as you like,” okonomiyaki is Japanese comfort food at

its best, and a clear violation of the typical refined image of Japanese
food. It’s a savoury pancake filled with any number of things (but usually
cabbage and pork) and topped with fish flakes, dried seaweed,
mayonnaise and a Worcester-style sauce.

1.30. Expressing ideas from past with effects in present

days.

We have many forms to talk about past events. We use Past when actions in past
have no connection to the present, while, Present Perfect is related to actions
that started in the past and that are still happening, or actions that have connection
with the present.

As you can see in the picture, PAST refers to activities that STARTED in the past
and FINISHED in the past. It means SHE CLEANED THE ROOM and now she’s
doing something different. However, when we want to say that something
STARTED in the past but this has NOT FINISHED IN PRESENT or it HAS SOME
CONSEQUENCES IN PRESENT, we say SHE HAS CLEANED THE ROOM, or
SHE HAS JUST CLEANED the floor.

1.33. Entertainment, T.V. and Fun

Entertainment is an area about which we all have different opinions and

preferences. When talking about entertainment, we are referring to the TV programs
we watch –or not watch-, the music we listen to –or not listen to-, the movies we see
–or not see-, and some other elements like actors, musicians, bands, etc.

1.34. Agree of Disagree?

When someone expresses his/her opinion and you agree with him/her because that
comment (positive or negative) is also true for you, you can use specific words to
show that agreement:

 SO and TOO are used to show agreement with comments that have an
affirmative structure. But careful! They are not used in the same way:

A: I am happy. B: So am I. / I am too. (Me too.)

A: You look nice today. B: So do you. / You do too. (You too.)

A: He can speak English. B: So can I. / I can too. (Me too.)

 NEITHER and EITHER are used to show agreement with comments that have a
negative structure. But careful! They are not used in the same way:

A: I am not hungry. B: Neither am I. / I am not either.

A: They don’t speak French. B: Neither do I. / I don’t either.

A: He can’t sing. B: Neither can I. / I can’t either.

ACTIVITIES

1.35. Talking about habits and routines.

We use Present Simple to talk about things we do frequently. But there are some
consideration we have to take into account:

THINGS WE FREQUENTLY DO

 I STUDY AT THE LIBRARY.

 SHE EATS AT 1:00 PM.

 THE DOG BARKS ALL NIGHT LONG.

 THEY GO SWIMMING TWICE A WEEK.

 Don’t forget that when we are talking in third person singular (when our
subject is he/she/it), the verb takes a final “s”.

The dog BARKS. (one dog = IT); the dogs BARK (many dogs = THEY).

Vicerrectoría Académica
Cuaderno de Apuntes

Mary GOES running every day, but I GO running just on Mondays.

Negative structures:

For negative structures we need to use the auxiliary “DO/DOES” + NOT. In informal
contexts we can use DON’T or DOESN’T.

 I DON’T STUDY AT HOME.

 HE DOESN’T SPEAK GERMAN.

 THE DOG DOESN’T SLEEP IN THE HOUSE.

 WE DON’T DO KARATE.

 Don’t forget that when we are talking in third person singular (when our
subject is he/she/it), the negative form is conformed by DOES + NOT
(DOESN’T). In this case, the verb doesn’t take the final “-s”.

My dad DOESN’T WORK near home. (works, no final “-s”)

The teacher DOESN’T live in this city. (lives, no final “-s”)

Interrogative structures:

In interrogative structures we use the auxiliary DO / DOES. Again, when we use

“does” the verb doesn’t take the final “-s”.

Does Karl watch the news in the morning?

Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.

What does Selene do after lunch?

She goes to the gym.

How do Mary and Jean go home after work?

They take the subway.

1.36. Making suggestions

As we mentioned before (1.26.), there are some modals we can use to make
requests or express obligation, ability, etc. There are also modals we can use to
MAKE SUGGESTIONS, and they are useful when we want to give ideas about
where to go or what to do.

The structures used to make suggestions are LET’S – WHY DON’T – COULD and
SHOULD.

 LET’S is used to make a suggest for a group of people in which the speaker is
included:

* Let’s go for a movie.

* Let’s go home early.
* Let’s not have drinks.

 WHY DON’T is preferably used in spoken English.

* Why don’t you clean the room?
* Why don’t we go to the stadium on Sunday?
* Why don’t you visit us tonight? We’re going to meet some friends.

 COULD is frequently used to suggest something more optional.

* We could go the beach this weekend. It’s still sunny and warm.
* You could study more for the next exam. You need to pass!

 SHOULD is used to make strong suggestions like advice.

* You should go home early tonight. Downtown is dangerous after ten.
* You shouldn’t waste time talking to him. He’s not worth it.

1.38. Listening to music.

We can describe and classify music interms of genres and styles. However,
classifications are often arbitrary and closely related forms often overlap.

This is a list of some different styles of music. We also call them “genres”. When
native English speakers ask the question “What kind of music do you like?” they are
expecting to hear one or more of these genres.

1.41. Short answers

Answering close questions with “Yes, I do” or “No, I don’t” in English is more polite
than just saying “Yes” or “No”. That’s why short answers are very commonly used.

To form the short answers, you use the first word from the question (either an
auxiliary verb or a form of ‘be’.):

Do you like sports? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

Does she speak English? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.

Can you go with me? Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.

Would you like to dance? Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn’t.

Are you a doctor? Yes, I am. / No, I am not.

Is he student? Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.

 Take into account that if you face an open question (a “Wh-” question), you
have to provide details.

What would you like to eat today?

Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn’t. I’d like to eat sushi.

When can he play soccer with us?

Yes, he can. / No, he can’t. He can play on Sundays.

1.43. Setting Goals

Learning a new language can seem intimidating, but setting goals in your process
will help you stay motivated and focused.

When you express your goals, some typical structures that can help you do it are:

I want … a new car to travel far.

I would like … to have more time.

I need … some days off to go the beach.

I hope … to lose considerable weight this winter.

Of course, the use of “I” means that the goal is personal. However, you can just
mention your objective starting with a specific verb (or activity you plan to do):

What are your objectives for this year?

Travel abroad.

Spend more time with my family.

Play some sports.

ACTIVITIES
47. At the beginning of the year, Lisa’s Colombian friend Javier thought
about setting his goals for this year 2016 for his English course. First,
read a little text about Javier’s difficulties. Then, tick (√) two goals
related to his problem. Finally, add two more goals he could probably
write.

Pic. 62 (N. D. Man Thinking)

This year has been very difficult. I am in another country,

and I have few friends. Of course, I like to be here, but the
problem is that English has been quite challenging. I have
had bad marks. My teacher told me that my English is not
bad, but I need to improve my fluency, but …. You know
what? I will no give up now. I need to set a plan =).
Everything will have to be focused on my university and
meeting new people. I can do that! =)

1.44. Expression the reasons of your ideas

There are certain structures to express purpose and / or giving reasons when
someone asks questions with “Why…?”:

 I am calling to order Chinese food.

 He took a book with him in order to have something to read.

 I moved to an apartment downtown so as to live near the office.

1.45. Making guesses about the future.

Ideas expressing future are considered to be unreal or imaginative conditional

sentences. These sentences express an action in the future that will only happen if
a certain condition is fulfilled by that time. For this reason, the modal verb “would”
perfectly expresses this uncertainty. This form works better using “like”.

I would like to travel abroad after graduating. (I’m not sure if I’m going
to do it or not! It’s going to depend on money, time, etc.)

A biography (or simply bio) is a detailed description of a person's life. It involves

more than just the basic facts like education, work, relationships, and death, but
also portrays a subject's experience of these life events. Unlike a resume, this
biography presents a subject's life story, highlighting various aspects of his or her
life, including intimate details of experience, and may include an analysis of the
subject's personality.

We use “going to” or “- ing” constructions when want to express situations that we
intend and are decided to do in the future. These structures are also used to make
predictions based on evidence.

1.49. Possibilites ahead

In English, there are some modals we can use to express future possibilities. These
modals are: COULD, MAY and MIGHT.

COULD shows possibility in the present or future in a range of 80%

* Present: Where are my keys? They could be in the car.

* Future: We could go to the party tonight.

 MAY shows possibility in the present or the future in a range of 50%

* Present: Where are my keys? They may be in the car or in my purse.

* Future: I may go to the party tonight. It depends on how I feel.

May is formal and is often used in writing.

MIGHT shows possibility in the present or future in a range less of 30%

* Present: Where are my keys? They might be in the car, but I haven’t
driven today.
* Future: I might go to the party tonight, but I work late.

Might is less formal than may, and is more common in conversations.
