Hydrogen Sulphide is a highly toxic, flammable and colourless gas which, at low
concentrations may be accompanied by a “rotten egg” odour and a sweet taste.
Hydrogen Sulphide odour may be detected by smell at concentrations as low as 0.13
ppm. A sudden exposure to high concentrations may retard or arrest the ability to
detect the odours. The presence of smell is not a reliable detection method.
The Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for Hydrogen Sulphide is 10 ppm on a 8 h time
weighed average.
9.2.2 IDENTIFICATION
H2S in the petroleum industry has many names; listed below are some of the better
known ones:-
Sulphurated Hydrogen
Stink Damp
Sour Gas
Sulphur Hydride
9.2.3 HAZARDS
Hydrogen Sulphide is a flammable gas which burns with a blue flame giving rise to
Sulphur Dioxide ( SO2 ). Mixtures of Hydrogen Sulphide and Air in the explosive
range may explode violently.
DBA

♦ Colourless.
♦ Burns with blue flame, producing Sulphur dioxide ( SO2 ) which is also a toxic gas.
DBA
Activity Issuer Serial N° Rev.
Fixed detection systems are located in different locations of project site for continuous
monitoring of H2S concentrations expected, due to leaks, ruptures etc. The sensors
shall be collectively monitored at a central point.
Personnel working in areas not monitored by fixed detection and alarm systems,
where there is a probability of encountering H2S are to be provided with personal
electronic detectors which will sound an alarm at or above 10 ppm.
Persons overcome by H2S shall be moved at once to fresh air by rescuers wearing
breathing apparatus; oxygen may also be given to help dissipate the effects of
exposure to H2S.
Less than or equal to 50 ppm Any air respirator with full face piece
