1. To what extent we believe competencies are something we are born with or can be
learned

In my opinion, competency can be learned as competency is the ability to do a task effectively which
is the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to get a job done. Every job has a requirement of
specific set of competencies to undertake it efficiently, and the individuals who would perform the job
need to be equip with those competencies. One of the interesting and worth mentioning aspect of
this term is that it focuses not on what a person can do but on what a person can learn. This forward
looking approach makes it quite popular amongst training providers and recruitment experts.

Competencies with their specific behavioural indicators facilitate the demonstration of appropriate
skills and behaviours, it is not a set of tasks performed like a robot neither it is an underlying capacity
which is never demonstrated. Competency also includes motivation and self-knowledge, a desire and
willingness to demonstrate effective performance. In addition, competency is a set of individual
performance behaviours which are observable, measurable and critical to successful individual and
company performance. Individual characteristics of a person which result in an effective and superior
performance in a job.

I agree as it is important for managers to understand and be aware of their internal and external
environment so that they have the ability to make good decisions and execute plans without
limitation. In addition, managers should also understand the aspect of the business environment
because it can affect their organization and how it should be run. If managers are not aware of these
aspects of the environment that are happening in their own firm, they may be caught unaware and
unready for changes that affect their organization, thus resulting in poor decision making.

The role of the management is to move an organization towards its purposes or goals by assigning
activities that organization members perform. If management ensures that all activities are designed
effectively, the production of each individual worker will contribute to the achievement of the
organizational goals. There is no doubt that the success in any business is because of the successful
employees. Hence, strong managers are one of the most critical components of employee’s contribute
to the company’s success. It is important to focus directly on managers as a lever of engagement to
recruit, retain, and inspire the greatest asset to the company is the employees itself.
