5: Can add the Middle, Last and (any) other initials to come up with
your babys' Initials.
An unusual name may make your child stand out from the rest but
the question is would she or he want to stand out? If your child is shy
and does not like attention, this may be a problem. However, if your
child likes the spotlight, then it may be a good thing. Some unusual
names are hard to spell and pronounce, so although it might make
them feel special, your child might have to get used to people
misspelling and mispronouncing their name or even teasing from
classmates. For more advice on this, see Choosing Unusual Baby
Names.
If you want to name your child after a close friend, keep in mind that
however close you are, friends may change. Is your best friend the
same one you had ten years ago or will your best friend now stay with
you for the next ten years? Think about it before deciding to name
your child after them.
Meaning
Ingrid will not be treated differently just because her name means
'hero's daughter' but she may feel strong because she is the 'hero's
daughter'. Your child may or may not care about the meaning of their
name but it is something you should consider. Especially if you
choose a name that has a negative meaning. Zona won't be very happy
once she finds out that her name actually means 'prostitute'.
Keep in mind your child’s initials when choosing names. Let’s say
there’s a couple that just had a baby girl. They want to name her
Piper. Seems like a good name. And for her middle name, they choose
Olivia. Sounds good. Now, if the couple’s last name happens to be
Oliath, how will Piper react when she gets older and figures out that
her initials are POO? She’ll be so embarrassed. And not to mention
the amount of teasing she’ll get when her classmates realize that too.
There are times in life when just initials are required. Make sure your
child’s initials do not spell out anything undesirable. Pauline Olivia
Thornton would have to go through life with the initials POT. Imagine
how horrible that would be for her.
Celebrity
You may be planning to name your baby after a celebrity (Real or
Fictional) with an unusual name. Even if the celebrity in question is a
household name at the moment, it is worth bearing in mind that ten
or twenty years down the line they may not be - but your child will
still be stuck with their name. Do you remember Kojak?
Keep it secret
A little advice; try to keep the baby’s name a secret between you and
your spouse until the baby’s born. If people don’t know your choice on
the name, they can’t voice their opinion on the name, which may
make you feel that it isn’t very suitable and want to change the name.
When the baby is born, some parents change their minds about the
Final Advice
Keep in mind; none of these are rules that absolutely HAVE to be
followed. They are just tips that we think will help you find your
perfect baby name.
Avoid names that begin with the same letter. If you name one child
Jane Smith and the other Joanne Smith, it may cause difficulty in
later years. Belongings of the child that have the child's initials on
them may be confused with the other. Later on, a letter might come
one day for Miss J Smith. This could bring about awkward situations
and disputes if the contents of the letter are private and the wrong
person opens it.
If you gave your first child an uncommon name, try not to give your
next child an ordinary or average name. As they mature, they might
wonder why their name did not get as much consideration and
creative thinking as their older sibling's. Give as much thought as you
gave into naming your first into naming your second.
As tempting as it is, when having twins do not give them names that
are alike. Especially when you have identical twins, they will feel that
their name is one of the few things that give them their individuality
from their twin. Naming one Christopher and the other Christine (both
can be dubbed Chris for short) is not a very good idea.
Giving your children names that are related but seemingly different is
an ideal way of naming your kids. Aidan and Nadia is a good choice if
you have a boy and a girl because they are actually the same word,
reversed. Amy and May are anagrams. Eve and Zoe, however different
they may seem, are very similar. They both mean 'life', one in Hebrew
and the other in Greek.
Cute names
However adorable a name might be to you, and it might even suit your
child as a baby, she or he would definitely not want to grow up with
that name. Your child may grow up to be an astronaut, or a school
principal, or maybe even a respectable state senator. I don't think
they'd appreciate a name like 'Fifi Trixibelle'. (Paula Yates and Bob
Geldof's daughter's name) If you absolutely must use a name like that,
I think it'd be a better fit and less stressful on the family poodle.
Naming your child with a last name that ends in a vowel along with a
last name that also starts with that vowel isn't a very good idea
because the names tend to run together. ("Eva Anderson") Also, try
not to give your child a name that rhymes or is similar to their last
name. It will be confusing. ("Jettie Pettit") And please, stay away from
pun names like "Holly Wood" or "Bud Weiser". It may be cute for about
five minutes when the baby's born, and then what? Eventually it will
get old. Then your child would be stuck with that horrible name for
the rest of their life.
These are some helpful tips that we think may help you into finding
an unusual, yet comfortable name for your child.
Name meanings:
To choose a unique name, you could decide on what you want your
child's name to mean. Baby Names Dictionary has a resource where
you can type in what you want your child's name to mean. From
there, we will pull out a list of names, both popular and unusual, with
that meaning.
Place names:
A lot of parents nowadays are using this method to name their child.
Some places actually make pretty good names, but because method is
becoming popular, naming your child after the place she or he was
born may not make a very uncommon name anymore. Places like
Colorado, Phoenix, Denver or Salem are some popular names for boys.
As for the girls, Paris, Vienna, Asia and Atlanta are some of the
preferred names.
Telescoping:
Take the name and drop letters until you've found a name you like.
Kahlil and Gibran can be combined and then telescoped to Kabran.
Schuyler can be telescoped to become Sky. Get the picture?
Unique names are fun, different and anything goes! Its only limitation
is your imagination. Names are inspired from everywhere, from
fashion designers to colors to months. June and April make nice
names for girls. Azure, Gray and Burgundy are also great names.
Countries or states like Dakota or Carolina are also used. But
remember, with every pro, there's a con.
Overall, unique names are not a bad thing. Just be kind to your kid
and choose wisely.
