Course Code & Title: ME8391 Engineering Thermodynamics
Topic : Work transfer

1. A cylinder contains 5 m3 of an ideal gas at a pressure of 1 bar. This gas is compressed in

a reversible isothermal process till its pressure increases to 5 bar. Calculate the work in kJ
required for this process. (GATE 2013)

2. A frictionless piston-cylinder device contains a gas initially at 0.8 MPa and 0.015 m3. It
expands quasi-statically at constant temperature to a final volume of 0.030 m3. Determine
the work output (in kJ) during the process. (GATE 2009)

3. A mono-atomic ideal gas (γ = 1.67, Moleculare weight = 40) is compressed adiabatically

from 0.1MPa, 300 K to 0.2 MPa. The universal gas constant is 8.314 kJ/kgmol-K. The
work of compression of the gas (in kJ/kg) is ____________ (GATE 2010)

4. An Engine operates on the reversible cycle as shown in the figure. The work output from
the engine (in Joule (J)) is (GATE 2017)
5. A cylinder contains 7 grams of nitrogen gas. How much work must be done to compress
the gas at a constant temperature of 80⁰C until the volume is halved?

6. The gas expanding in the combustion space of a reciprocating engine has an initial
pressure of 50 bar and an initial temperature of 1623⁰C. The initial volume is 50000mm3
and the gas expands through a volume of 20 according to the law pV1.25 = Constant.
Calculate the work transfer. (April/May 2019, Anna Univ)

7. Determine the work transfer for a system in which a perfect gas having molecular weight
of 16kg/kgmole is compressed from 101.3 kPa, 20⁰C to a pressure of 600 kPa following
the law pV1.3= Constant. (Nov/Dec 2019, Anna Univ)

8. Calculate the work done on air which undergoes reversible adiabatic compression from 4
bar, 0.3 m3 to 0.08 m3 according to the law pV1.25= Constant.
(Nov/Dec 2019, Anna Univ)

9. During an experiment of 1 hour duration, 1 kg of air (assumed as ideal gas) initially at 1

bar and 300 K is stirred with a constant torque of 10 Nm at 100 rpm, meanwhile the gas
expands at constant pressure till the volume is doubled. What is the net work done.

10. One kg of an ideal gas (Molecular weight = 30 kg/kgmole) at 1 bar and 300 K is first
compressed at constant pressure till the volume becomes one tenth of the initial volume.
It is then heated at constant volume till the pressure becomes 15 bar. Finally it is
expanded till the initial conditions are reached according to the law pVn = C, where ‘C’ is
a constant. Determine work done.
