0 INTRODUCTION

Throughout the practicum program, trainee teachers are expected to get themselves

familiarized with the respective schools that they are assigned to. Therefore, this

report is written as a means to understanding the school in greater details, as well as

giving readers an insight into ways schools in Malaysia are managed and maintained.

This report will look into three key areas of a particular school, which are namely;

management, infrastructure and curriculum.

1.1 School’s Brief Information

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Munshi Abdullah or SMKMA for short; is

situated in Batu Berendam, Melaka. It is about 5 km from the Malacca

International Airport and approximately 10 minutes from the Malacca City. The

school presently consists of around 5000 students and 400 teachers. The school’s

name is taken from one of Malaysia’s prominent National Laureate, Datuk

Munshi Abdullah.

SMK Munshi Abdullah is a daily school with the options of students living in

the dormitories. The school has a unique curriculum syllabus because of its

implementation of religious stream classes which can be commonly found in

religious schools. The school’s hours are also slightly different than ordinary

schools since the school has two sessions and the afternoon session starts at 11.30

am with the exception of Friday.

The school separated the Form 6 students from the other Forms since they have

their own building and their own Senior Assistant (GPK).

For Form 4 and 5, there is the availability of the science and arts streams. For

other Forms; Form 1 until Form 3, the classes are divided into three categories,

the various skills classes (PK), the religious classes, (PKA) and the technical

skills classes (KT).

1.2 School’s History

SMK Munshi Abdullah was established in the year 1958 responding to the

Razak Statement on Education Policy of 1956. On its early establishment,

students were temporary placed at Sekolah Inggeris Gajah Berang at Jalan

Gajah Berang. Its original name was Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Laki-

Laki Bandar Melaka (SMKL). The first batch of students was 80 Form 1

students.

In the year 1964, SMKL were temporary transferred to a building in Sekolah

Menengah Tun Tijah, at Jalan Durian Daun. Later on, it was transferred and

placed at Durian Daun building in October 1965.

In December 1966, SMKL has its own building at Batu Berendam, which

were placed about 5 km from Malacca town. The school name was then

changed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lelaki Batu

Berendam(SMKLBB). At that time, SMKLBB consisted of 4 buildings

which were Blok A, B, C, D and a canteen.

In 16 June 1968 when SMKLBB was officially launched by Tan Sri Mohd.

Khir Johari, Ministry of Education at that time, the school name was changed

to Sekolah Menengah Munshi Abdullah (SMMA)Batu Berendam, Melaka.

Tingkatan 6 Sastera started in 1969 and consisted of 30 students where 15

boys 15 girls. In the year 1970, three classes of Form 4 science stream started

the intake of female students because previously, the Form 1 up to the Form 5

students were all male students. In relevant to the situation, one Form 6

Science class was started in SMKMA in 1971.

In 1977, SMKMA received ‘Rancangan Khas’ students where the students

received at least 3 A’s in their Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) but

not able to enter boarding school ‘Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP)’ for 2

classes with the number of students 65-75 male and female students. They

were compulsory to live in the hostel.

In the year 1991, ‘Rancangan Khas (RK)’ was abolished and replaced with

‘Kelas Aliran Agama (KAA)’. On the surface, KAA is the same with RK but

the students were unable to proceed their study in SMK(A), which is the

secondary religion stream schools.

1.3 School’s Logo or Emblem

1958 – 1968. This is the logo of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Laki-laki

Bandar Melaka and also the Sekolah Menengah Laki-laki Batu Berendam

when they transferred to the present location.

The school’s logo changed to this design when the school was renamed

Sekolah Menengah Munshi Abdullah (SMMA) and officially launched by the

Minister of Education, Mr. Khir Johari in 1968.

The present and currently used logo has a little difference to its predecessor

when the school is renamed again as Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Munshi

Abdullah.

the school administrators and share holders to discuss all the

problems and issues that might occur in the future.

Normally, the PTA helps the school to run the school activities and

the PTA would be one of the financial funding in running the

activities. The PTA might be the real help if the school faces

problems such as in financial or organizing events. It also plays a

pivotal role in sharing suggestions or opinions between teachers

and students as well as parents.

2.4.3 Activities

At the time this report is written, the author had no source or

evidence whether the school’s PTA had any activity organized or

However, with the author’s own experience of being a school

student, the PTA would usually held a meeting three times in a

year. Normally, the meetings would be held at the beginning of the

year, middle of the year; right after the mid-year examination and

end of the year; usually on October.

from 9.00 am until 4.30 pm for Monday to Friday.

The school library has two different sections. One section is for the

Form 1 until form 5 section and another section is strictly for form

6 students only.

According to the Head Library Teacher, Puan Maria Musa, each

student is liable to borrow two types of book at one time; which

are fiction and non-fiction. However, in order for the students to

borrow the book, they need to have a library card. The library card

is an individual card with a barcode that can easily trace the

student’s database and the class he or she belongs to.

Teachers can also borrow resource books from the library if they

also obtain an individual library card. However, there is no limit as

to how many books a teacher can borrow.

The school library also provided reading materials that are aiming

for students’ pleasure such as novels, newspaper and other types of

books. Nevertheless, these books cannot be borrowed or brought

out of the library. Students can only enjoy reading these materials

in the library only.

3.1.2 Resource room

The Audio-Visual Room is located next to the library and also

stores many reference materials that can be used for teaching. The

Audio-Visual Room is equipped with an LCD projector, a

television set and a DVD player. This facility is often used by

teachers, especially those who are teaching the Form Six students

as it is situated in the same block as the Form Six classes. Thus,

reservations need to be made at least a week earlier through the

Media Teacher, Puan Maria Musa.

3.1.5 School Halls

There are three different halls in SMK Munshi Abdullah. The halls

provided in the school are:-

3.1.5.1 Munshi Hall

The biggest hall available in the school, Munshi Hall is

used mostly for official events organized in the school

such as the weekly assembly and the annual meetings

among the teachers.

On any given day, Munshi Hall can fill up to 3000

students in one session. The hall is provided with a

stage, various plaques of past students’ successes and

the school logo or emblem.

3.1.5.2 Wawasan Hall and Warisan Hall

The Wawasan and Warisan Hall are situated beside

Munshi Hall. They are both open-air halls and are

mainly used for the moral activities for the non-Muslim

students as the Muslim students would be going to the

surau for prayers.

Both halls are also used for unofficial matters such as

gathering students for a short briefing and held classes

that starts as early as 11.30 am (for the afternoon

session students in the religious classes).

3.1.5.3 Canteen
The school canteen is available in front of the F Block

and beside the school’s basketball court.

The school canteen has a strict rule of not selling food

to students outside of the recess period.

3.1.5.4 Surau

The surau is where the Muslim students pray during the

period where the non-Muslim students are having their

moral activities in the Wawasan and Warisan Hall.

The surau is also the place where the Islamic Education

teachers would asses the students’ knowledge of PAFA

(Penilaian Asas Fardhu Ain) where the students will

perform prayers and other religious activities while

being observed by the teachers whether their recitations

are correct.

3.1.5.5 Basketball Court

The basketball court is located next to the canteen and it

is one of the prominent sports played in the school.

Before the afternoon session starts, the afternoon

session students can mostly be seen here having a few

games of hoops before entering their respective

classrooms.

3.1.5.6 Tennis Court

The school’s tennis court is located besides the male

students’s hostel (Aspura). Although it seems like

abandoned for its secluded location, the school’s tennis

court can be seen having some actions during the tennis

tournaments and various other activities. If one is

standing in the middle of the tennis court, one could

have a clear view of the neighbouring school, SMK Tun

Mutahir.

3.1.5.7 Multi-purpose field

The school field is used for a lot of activities but

mainly, it is used as a football field. The field is situated

at the back of the school halls and Astaka (an unofficial

stage for afternoon session students’ assembly). It is

next to the field of SMK Tun Mutahir and only being

divided by a fence.

3.1.5.8 Munshi’s Gallery

The Munshi’s Gallery is situated near the canteen and

the Examination Unit Room. The Gallery has been used

as the school’s record room and had been used since the

school established here in Batu Berendam.

The Gallery opens on specific time only which are from

10.25 am until 11.25 am on Mondays, Wednesdays,

Thursdays and Fridays while on Tuesdays, it opens

from 10.15 am until 11.10 am.

4.0 Curriculum

4.1 Implementation of the Curriculum

4.1.1 Timetable

The timetable of the school varies for each teacher. This is because

there are three types of teachers using three different teaching

timetables.
The first type of teachers is the morning session teachers. Their

teaching timetable starts at 7.30 am until 1.10 pm in the afternoon.

The second type of teachers is the afternoon session teachers where

their teaching timetable starts at 11.30 am up to 6.45 pm.

The third type of teachers is the dual session teachers. Their

teaching timetable starts from 7.30 am up to 4.00pm. In the school,

they are aptly named “double lives teachers” (cikgu dua alam).

Since there are clashes on the teaching timetable for the morning

and afternoon session teachers and the lack of classrooms, the

school uses all the three halls to be temporary classes which is

aptly named “floating classes” (kelas terapung).

4.1.2 Syllabus

The syllabus of a particular subject is provided by the Ministry of

Education. All of the teachers need to follow the syllabus given

and they can also add other information that can be used on their

teaching as long as they are complying to the syllabus and can be

beneficial to the students.

4.2 Implementation of the Co-Curriculum

4.2.1 Clubs, Societies and Uniform Units

Each and every student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Munshi

Abdullah is required to join a club, a society and a uniform body.

These activities are part of their marks for the involvement in Co-

Curricular activities in the school. They can join clubs such as the

English Language Society, the Science and Mathematics Society

and the Computer and ICT Club. As for the uniform bodies, they

can join units such as the Police Cadets, the St. John Ambulance

and the Firefighter Cadets.

4.2.2 Sports and Games

The same rule applies for sports and games, in which all students

are to be involved in sports and games. A lot of sports and games

have been offered to students. The example of sports and games

are football, basketball, rugby, chess and netball. All of these

sports and games are aimed at producing all-round students while

turning the school into one of the frontrunners in Co-Curriculum

activities.
Each and every student is also required to represent their respected

sports houses during the inter-sports houses game such as Sukan

Sekolah and Sukaneka.

4.3 Teaching Observation

On Monday, 28th June 2010, I was managed to observe one of my mentor,

Miss S. Valli Subramaniam’s classes. It was a one period class (30 minutes)

from 10.45 am until 11.20 am. The class observed was Form 5 AK 1.

(For the Classroom Observation Checklist, refer to the Appendices Section)

5.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the SOP report is very beneficial for all trainee teachers. It helps the

trainee teachers to get to know the administration, the teachers and how the school is

administered.

For the administration and teachers, they have the opportunity to meet new people

who just started in the education field and help the trainee teachers to immerse

themselves with the culture of the school and life as a teacher. They can also be a
source of motivation for aspiring teachers as they display good personalities and lead

by examples.

The students, on the other hand, can give a preview of how the teenagers act these

days. Obviously, the trainee teachers cannot have a class where the students are well-

disciplined at all times but they can offer challenges for the trainee teachers to be

better educators and help them succeed in life.

Nonetheless, the author’s brief stint in the school will truly be a rewarding

experience should the author decided to make teaching his career. It is hoped that

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Munshi Abdullah will continue to churn out

excellent students not only in academic but also in life. The successes that the school

has achieved shall be continued for generations to come and be awe of the successes

that have been achieved and will be achieved.
