16. National Fish Week 2009 (30July-05August)

ÔFish FortnightÕ as a formal national event was first introduced in 1993


as a means of creating awareness about the fisheries sector among the
people and to bring together all stakeholders of this sector. Since then it
has been observed almost every year. During 2005-06, the National Fish
Fortnight (August 7-21, 2005 was celebrated with due emphasis through
nation wide mass and private media publicity. Last year the slogan for
fish fortnight was “Haor Baor Plavon Bhume Matshya Chaser Sonar
Khoni”. At the instruction of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Fisheries
and Livestock through the Department of Fisheries took up a programme
to build up awareness for conservation of fisheries resources among the
people and to motivate them for participation in technology based
improved fish culture for increased production of fish and shrimp.
