CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking,

change actions, and cause reactions. It can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure

or suppress your appetite. When used in the right ways, color can even save on energy

consumption.

Colors are not just there to beautify our surroundings, it also helps to stimulate the mood

and behavior people. As we go on our everyday lives we do encounter colors and it definitely have

purpose other than just to give our world vividness. We live in a world of color.

According to various researches, the color that surrounds us in our daily lives has a

profound effect on our mood and on our behavior. According to Aves (1994), the presence of color

in things such as clothing, interiors, landscapes, and even natural light can change our mood from

sad to happy, from confusion to intelligence, from fear to confidence. Colors can actually level out

emotions or to create different moods.

Another study conducted by Kotler (1973), the design of an environment through a variety

of means such as temperature, sounds, layout, lighting, and colors can stimulate perceptual and

emotional responses in people and affects their behavior. We all know that color is an inseparable

part of our everyday lives, this study aims to use it as a medium of improvement for students’

behavior and moods. It is inherent in everything we see and do and studies indicate that it plays a

role in emotion, productivity, communication and learning.

For decades, interior designers have leveraged color to set a room’s purpose or mood.

While often ignored in the classroom, color remains an important element to consider in any

environment. The use of color can be broad, such as a room’s wall color, or a select accent, such

as chairs, desks or tables, depending on the intended effect. With a few exceptions, the use of color

within schools has been limited to functionality. According to Ohio-based interior designer,

Elizabeth Stout, color in school room design is rarely a consideration, except for its relation to

functionality. Typically, a school will have a neutral wall color and use the school’s colors as an

occasional accent. However, furniture color is an important part of the school. Similar to wall

color, the pieces used in different spaces require different color usage to facilitate learning. While

there is no one-size-fits-all approach to room and furniture color selection, looking at the effects

of color on emotion and relating that to the purpose of the learning space can help guide the color

choices on walls, on floors, and even on furniture.

Colors have a psychological value. This can vary depending on our personal experiences and

associations with a color, there are also specific traits of colors that may be having a very real

impact on your mood. Before choosing to incorporate a color significantly in everyday

consumption, take a moment to think about how looking at the color for an extended period of

time makes us feel. Some colors are only good in small doses. Although yellow is widely

considered a color that helps your mood, it’s not recommended as a main color scheme. Studies

have shown that rooms with too much yellow may actually cause people to lose their tempers more

easily.

The depth and darkness of a color can impact how it is received. For instance, dark purple can

cause a more dramatic reaction, whereas light purple is considered relaxing—making it a good

choice for a bedroom.

David Johnson (2017) conducted a study that summarizes the perception of people about

common colors like black, white, red, blue, green, yellow, purple and brown. Johnson’s study

states that black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people

appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless.

Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion

experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. White symbolizes innocence and

purity that’s why brides often wear white gowns during their wedding day. Doctors and nurses

wear white to imply sterility.

Red is the most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is

also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is

an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars

are popular targets for thieves. Blue was said to be the color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one

of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes

the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms.

Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job

interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show

weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms. Green is currently the most popular

decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision.

It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in green rooms to relax.

Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the middle ages wore green to

symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. However,

seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad

luck.

A cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color,

people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most

difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances

concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

Purple is the color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also

feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.

Lastly, brown is interpreted as a solid color. Reliable brown is the color of earth and is

abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or

leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful.

While blue is one of the most popular colors it is one of the least appetizing. Blue food is rare

in nature. Food researchers say that when humans searched for food, they learned to avoid toxic

or spoiled objects, which were often blue, black, or purple. When food dyed blue is served to study

subjects, they lose appetite. Green, brown, and red are the most popular food colors. Red is often

used in restaurant decorating schemes because it is an appetite stimulant.

The research will be conducted primarily aiming to identify the effects of color among the

mood of students and how it can be a great help to control different moods and behaviors. Being

a Grade Eleven student is not easy there are lot stressors that we need to face including the

challenges of adolescence which affects the hormones of the body causing some mood disorders.

It is important to study the connection of colors and moods because it can be use as an advantage

to take control of how we handle our moods. A lot of studies are conducted by deifferent

researchers but we are still aiming to nurture and gain better understanding of color psychology.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study discussed the effects of color prior to the mood of Grade Eleven students at

Jesus Is Lord Christian School.

Specifically, the following questions will be answered:

1. Why do colors affect the mood of students?

2. How can we use colors to control or regulate the mood of students?

3. What action plan is needed to use colors as a tool in enhancing the mood of

students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be beneficial especially to the following:

Students. Colors affect the behavior, attitude, attention span and learning of students as well as

the time concept of the students and this study will make them aware of that. Students will be able

to know on how they can help themselves to control their moods.

Teachers. This research will help them in a way that they will have a hint on how to accommodate

and make their students more attentive during classes.

Entrepreneur. Most of today's conversations on colors and persuasion consist of hunches,

anecdotal evidence and advertisers blowing smoke about "colors and the mind." To alleviate this

trend and give proper treatment to a truly fascinating element of human behavior.

Parents. The parents will have a background knowledge of how the color of the environment

can help them to innovate the moods of their children.

Future Researchers. This research was undertaken to find out how color affects the mood of the

students, future researchers can site this research and gather some ideas that will help them to

understand color psychology.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The main focus of the study is to identify the effect of colors upon the mood of students. The

study will be conducted at Jesus Is Lord Christian School and the respondents will be Grade Eleven

students because students at the age range of 15-19 are most likely to experience drastic mood

changes. Both female and male respondents will be chosen randomly. The study evaluates the

effect of color upon Grade Eleven students and results may vary according to personal opinions

and experience.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Colors. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary colors are a phenomenon of lights or visual

representation that enables one to differentiate otherwise identical objects. In this paper it is

defined as a specific combination of hue that can possibly affect the moods of students.

Behavior. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary behavior is the way in which someone

conducts oneself. In this study behavior is the attitude of a person towards what he or she sees and

visualize.

Color Psychology. According to Precision Intermedia a website that studies about colors, color

psychology is about sending positive or negative messages through the medium of colors. In this

study color psychology talks about studies and researches that supports the idea of association

between mood and colors.

Mood. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary mood is a conscious state of mind or

predominant emotion. In this study mood is defined as the primary reaction and disposition of

students prior to what they see or visualize.

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-depth

search done by the researchers. This will also present the synthesis, theoretical framework and

conceptual framework to fully understand the research to be done.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to American Psychological Association (2009), mood is an emotional state that

may last anywhere from a few minutes to several weeks. Mood affects the way people respond to

stimuli. For example, a depressed mood creates a bias in favor of responding negatively, whereas

a manic mood makes it more likely that a person will respond energetically. Moods are different

from emotions in that they are not necessarily caused by anything. For example, a person may feel

the emotion of happiness after getting married or receiving a gift, while a happy mood is a

disposition to react happily toward external stimuli. Moods tend to last longer than emotions.

Additionally, according to Yolanda Williams (2003), emotions are intense feelings that are

directed at specific objects or situations, while mood is a state of feeling that is less intense than

emotions and more generalized. For instance, when a person is mad (emotion), they are usually

mad at specific things; however, when a person is feeling anxious (mood), they may be anxious

throughout the day no matter what the circumstances.

Meanwhile, the website Your Dictionary (2019) explains mood as a feeling or a person's

specific state of mind at any particular time. A mood is also the prevailing emotion found not only

in people but also in literature, music, and other expressive arts. Moods set the overall tone for

speech or writing and are an important element in literature as well as in everyday life.

On the other hand, Crayola Company (2017) states that color is the aspect of things that is

caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted by them.

To see color, you have to have light. When light shines on an object some colors bounce off

the object and others are absorbed by it. Our eyes only see the colors that are bounced off or

reflected. The sun’s rays contain all the colors of the rainbow mixed together. This mixture is

known as white light. When white light strikes a white crayon or marker barrel, it appears white

to us because it absorbs no color and reflects all color equally. A black crayon or marker cap

absorbs all colors equally and reflects none, so it looks black to us. While artists consider black a

color, scientists do not because black is the absence of all color.

While the RGB world (2019), defined color as a sensation that adds excitement and emotion

to our lives. Everything from the cloths we wear, to the pictures we paint revolves around color.

Without color; the world would be a much less beautiful place. Color can also be used to describe

emotions; we can be red hot, feeling blue, or green with envy.

Moreover, Kendra Cherry and Steven Gans MD (2018), explained that color is produced

when light is striking an object and reflected back to the eye. The three properties to color are hue,

intensity, and value. Hue is the name we give to a color. Intensity is the strength and vividness of

the color. Value is the lightness or darkness of color. Shade and tint are in reference to value

changes in colors. Color is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action,

influence mood, and cause physiological reactions. Certain colors can raise blood pressure,

increase metabolism, or cause eyestrain. Feelings about color can be deeply personal and are often

rooted in experience or culture.

Furthermore, the executive director of The Color Association of the United States, Leslie

Harrington (2013), states that there are several reasons why colors are able to influence how we

feel. Harrington said that people tend to react on multiple levels of association with colors. There

are social or culture levels as well as personal relationships with particular colors humans also

have an innate reaction to color. For example, when we look at red, it does increase our heart rate.

It is a stimulating color. This goes back to caveman days of fire and danger and alarm.

Likewise, as stated by Anonymous (2018), colors are often used to express different emotions,

as in the phrase, “I am feeling blue.” When we are sick, we might refer to ourselves as green.

Someone else might be red with anger. Colors provide a way to add a visual representation to an

invisible quality. They help us more accurately describe emotions. Colors can actually create and

effect emotions, as well. Seeing a particular color can change our mood without you even realizing

it. Marketers and advertisers exploit this fact all the time. Big company logos are red for they not

only get our attention, but they also get our blood pumping.

On the other hand, Sally Agustin, Ph.D (2015), believes that the most important thing to know

about colors, and our emotional response to them, has to do with colors’ saturation and brightness.

Saturation is how pure a color is. Less saturated colors are more grayish, so khaki green is less

saturated than Kelly green. Brightness is, as you’d expect, basically how light a color seems.

Colors that are less saturated but bright, such as a bright sage green, are relaxing, and those that

are more saturated and less bright, such as sapphire blues, are more energizing to look at.

Lastly, Steven Gans, MD (2018), color can play an important role in conveying information,

creating certain moods, and even influencing the decisions people make. Color preferences also

exert an influence on the objects people choose to purchase, the clothes they wear, and the way

they adorn their environments. People often select objects in colors that evoke certain moods or

feelings, such as selecting a car color that seems sporty, futuristic, sleek, or trustworthy. Room

colors can also be used to evoke specific moods, such as painting a bedroom a soft green to

create a peaceful mood.

RELATED STUDY

Johnson (2007) found out in his study that colors does affect the mood by producing certain

chemicals and stimulating different feelings such as hunger. For example, blue can make one feel

calm because it releases calming chemicals, and red can make one hungry because itis an appetite

stimulant. Yellow can make someone feel irritated, and it is a fact that people lose their temper

most in yellow rooms. However, pink is tranquilizing and can make one feel weak. In conclusion,

Johnson says that depending on the color, one’s body can do things such as producing chemicals

that cause a certain emotional reaction.

Another study by Smith (2007), is that the effect that color produces is based on what one’s

body does in response. For instance, yellow is mentally stimulating and activates memory and

whereas red increases confidence. Also, brown can make a person feel orderly and stable, while a

dark blue can make one feel sad. Therefore, Smith says that different colors do in fact change the

mood of people and the consequences can be negative or positive.

Another writer Wollard (2000) formulated an idea through his study that color can affect one’s

mood, but the effect can also depend on people’s culture and what their persona may be. For

example, someone from Japan may not associate red with anger, as people from the United States

tend to do. Also, a person who likes color brown may associate brown with happiness. However,

Wollard does think that colors can make everyone feel the same, or close to the same mood.

According to Wollard, pink reduces aggression, which is why the walls of the jail cells in Seattle

prisons are pink.

More recent research conducted by Carruthers, Morris, Tarrier, and Whorwell (2010) focused

on mood-color associations with the use of new color wheel instrument they developed specifically
GRADE ELEVEN
DEPARTMENT
J.V. PAGASPAS STREET, TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS * (043) 778 - 1045 SCHOOL OF CHARACTER DRIVEN LEADER

for their study. They discussed the shortcomings of projective color tests such as “the Color

Pyramid test, the Rorschach Inkblot test, the Luscher Color test, the Lowenfeld Mosaic test, and

the Stroop test,” and sighted the lack of a valid tools for measuring emotional states (Caruthers et.

al., 2010). In their study, three participant groups (healthy, anxious, and depressed) were exposed

to a total of thirty-eight colors in a color-wheel (eight main colors with four variations of each and

four shades of gray) and chose a color they were most drawn to, a favorite color, and which color

best represented their recent mood (Caruthers et.al., 2010). Participants from all three groups

showed similar responses on what colors were their favorites and most drawn to, but in comparison

to the healthy group, the anxious and depressed groups had significantly different responses to

mood-color association and most often chose variations of gray to describe their mood (Caruthers

et. al., 2010).

Eric, John, and Paraag’s (2007) main point in their study is about color psychology is that

color has both a physiological and psychological effect. For example, green makes people feel

relaxed because it relaxes their muscles and makes them breathe deeper and more slowly.

Furthermore, blue lowers blood pressure, which makes one feel calm. Eric, John, and Paraag

conclude that color affects one’s mood because of what it does to the body.

Yet another study conducted by Airey (2006), is that color is energy, and it can have a

physical, mental, spiritual, and/or emotional effect on people. He states that black can make one

feel sophisticated and secure, but it can also make one feel depressed. Also brown can make a

person feel reliable and serious, while yellow lifts self-esteem. Therefore, Airey concludes that

different colors can have different kinds of effects on people.

According to a research study from Hill and Barton (2005), they noted that in many non-

human animals, including primate species, dominance in aggressive encounters like superior

physical condition is signaled by the bright red of oxygenated blood visible on highly vascularized

bare skin. Artificial red has likewise been shown to signal dominance in non-human animals,

mimicking the natural physiological process. In humans in aggressive encounters, a testosterone

surge produces visible reddening on the face and fear leads to pallor Hill and Barton (2005) posited

that the parallel between humans and non-humans present at the physiological level may extend

to artificial stimuli, such that wearing red in sport contests may convey dominance and lead to a

competitive advantage.

Furthermore, Elliot and Maier (2012) have proposed color-in-context theory, which draws on

social learning, as well as biology. Some responses to color stimuli are presumed to be solely due

to the repeated pairing of color and particular concepts, messages, and experiences. Others,

however, are presumed to represent a biologically engrained predisposition that is reinforced and

shaped by social learning. Through this social learning, color associations can be extended beyond

natural bodily processes (e.g., blood flow modulations) to objects in close proximity to the body

(e.g., clothes, accessories). Thus, for example, red may not only increase attractiveness evaluations

when viewed on the face, but also when viewed on a shirt or dress. As implied by the name of the

theory, the physical and psychological context in which color is perceived is thought to influence

its meaning and, accordingly, responses to it.

Moreover, Meier and Robinson (2005) have posited a conceptual metaphor theory of color.

From this perspective, people talk and think about abstract concepts in concrete terms grounded in

perceptual experience (i.e., they use metaphors) to help them understand and navigate their social
GRADE ELEVEN
DEPARTMENT
J.V. PAGASPAS STREET, TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS * (043) 778 - 1045 SCHOOL OF CHARACTER DRIVEN LEADER

world (Lakoff and Johnson, 1999). Thus, anger entails reddening of the face, so anger is

metaphorically described as “seeing red,” and positive emotions and experiences are often depicted

in terms of lightness (rather than darkness), so lightness is metaphorically linked to good (“seeing

the light”) rather than bad (“in the dark”). These metaphoric associations are presumed to have

implications for important outcomes such as morality judgments (e.g., white things are viewed as

pure) and stereotyping (e.g., dark faces are viewed more negatively).

As stated on the study by (Cajochen et al., 2005), for many years it has been known that

light directly influences physiology and increases arousal but recently theorists have posited that

such effects are wavelength dependent. Blue light, in particular, is posited to activate the

melanopsin photoreceptor system which, in turn, activates the brain structures involved in sub-

cortical arousal and higher-order attentional processing. As such, exposure to blue light is expected

to facilitate alertness and enhance performance on tasks requiring sustained attention.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
GRADE ELEVEN

J.V. PAGASPAS STREET, TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS * (043) 778 - 1045 SCHOOL OF CHARACTER DRIVEN LEADER

The theory Color Psychology was proposed by David Johnson (2007), it states that like death

and taxes, there is no escaping color. It is ubiquitous. Yet what does it all mean? Why are people

more relaxed in green rooms? Why do weightlifters do their best in blue gyms?

Colors often have different meanings in various cultures. And even in Western societies, the

meanings of various colors have changed over the years. But today in the U.S., researchers have

generally found the following to be accurate.

Black

Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people

appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to

signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission

to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains,

such as Dracula, often wear black.

White

Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a

summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes

with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other

colors. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility.

Red

The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also

the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an

extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are

popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red

furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.

Pink

The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the

locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

Blue

The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the

opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so

it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend

wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue

rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

Green

Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color

on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on

TV sit in "green rooms" to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in

the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and

implies wealth. However, seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion

show for fear it will bring bad luck.

Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color,

people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most

difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances

concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

Purple

The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine

and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.

Brown

Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies

genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful.

Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.

While blue is one of the most popular colors it is one of the least appetizing. Blue food is

rare in nature. Food researchers say that when humans searched for food, they learned to avoid

toxic or spoiled objects, which were often blue, black, or purple. When food dyed blue is served

to study subjects, they lose appetite. Green, brown, and red are the most popular food colors. Red

is often used in restaurant decorating schemes because it is an appetite stimulant.

SYNTHESIS

Johnson (2017) and Smith (2007), stated that the effect of color towards mood is a product of

our body. The hormones and chemicals that our body releases due to the presence of colors causes

certain emotional reaction.

On the other hand, Wollard (2000) believes that color affect the mood of people depending on

the culture and persona they have.

Caruthers et.al (2010), conducted a study and used a color wheel instrument to observe the

effect of color towards mood. They concluded that anxious and depressed group of people tend to

react more vigorously than a healthy group.

Eric et.al (2007), Elliot and Maier (2012), Airey (2006), and Hill and Barton (2005), stated

that colors affect people in a physiological (e.g. blood pressure) and psychological way, the

response of the stimuli of people are solely due to the presence of color. The main idea of both

studies is that color affects one's mood because of what it does to our body.

Metaphors were a big help regarding to the study of Meier and Robinson (2005). They used

metaphors to site abstract and concrete concepts about the how color affects the mood.

While Cajochen et.al (2005), used wavelengths of colors to study the effect of color and light

prior to the alertness and performance of people.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study is a qualitative method which is a descriptive method of research. According

to Holton and Burnett (2005), descriptive research design uses surveys to gather information

about organizations, groups, people, and other categories to describe major characteristics which

is the general procedure of determining the effect of colors prior to the mood of Grade Eleven

students at Jesus Is Lord Christian School.

The relationship between color and mood is widely accepted and studied by researchers

around the world. Hence, this study focuses on the perspective of Grade Eleven students at

JILCS about the relationship between the two main variables which are color and their mood.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study are Grade Eleven students from Jesus Is Lord Christian School.

The respondents’ age range is between 16-18 years old, at this point in adolescence hormonal

changes take place and occur severely that may cause sudden changes in mood.

The researchers chose the respondents concerning their age range. A study conducted by the

UNICEF Office of Research (2017), states that at the moment a person reach the age between 16-

18 his/her hormones become more and more active that results to interchanging moods. The

researchers would like to identify and analyze different techniques in order to control the mood of

the students.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The instrument used was a researcher-made questionnaire specifically a checklist to gather the

needed data for the student’s profile. The draft of the questionnaire was drawn from the related

literature and studies of the research paper and also from the statement of the problem. The

requirements in the designing of good data collection instrument were considered. For instance,

the questions were toned down to the level of intellect of the said respondents to accommodate

their perspectives. Open-ended questions were also used in order to gather verbatim data and to

obtain valid responses from the students.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The first step into the survey proper was to send request letters to the class advisers of the

students who will be the respondents. In conducting the survey the researchers provided

questionnaires that contains all the questions that need to be answered in order to come up with

results and conclusions. Lastly, the researchers analyzed and summarized the answers from their

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

I. Colors affect the mood of students

1. What color stimulates happiness and why?

Happiness is triggered by bright colors because they are pleasing to the eyes according to

Katherine Fesalbon. However, the rest of the respondents answered specifically just like Trisha

Esperon.

to happiness dahil sa light nitong kulay gaya ng nafefeel natin if we are happy.” Likewise

Kiemberly Lagare said “Para sakin the color that stimulates happiness ay yung kulay na yellow

Together with these two girls there

are also five other respondents who shared the same answer, Marianna Aguda for instance

discussed that “Yellow. It lightens up my mood because of its bright color.” Ronald Orido sited

“YELLOW because color yellow for me represents positivity so i feel so positive when I see

yellow so that I feel happy.” Rochelle Lanceta she said that “yellow, kasi para sakin

Shaina Saavedra shared that for her

“Yellow, para sakin yung kulay ng yellow ay nakakapag bigay ng saya sa mga tao na nakakakita

nito dahil sa tingkad ng kulay at mabilis na mapansin ito.” As for the last respondent who answered

For some respondents blue is their choice of color when it comes to happiness. According to

Felice Moncayo “Aqua blue, it makes me feel relieved.” Followed by Ian Galang who said that

“Blue. Kasi nakakalma yung kulay at favorite ko yung kulay blue.” Rose Ann Rendon also

answered blue and claimed that “For me color blue, because maaliwalas tingnan at tsaka it

symbolize freedom.” Merie Rose Ramos had the same answer wherein she declared that “Blue

because it symbolize freedom.” Same with Erika Millera “Blue, kasi nagsisimbolo sya ng

kapayapaan.” Lastly, Seth Madrid opted for blue and stated that “Blue kasi favorite color ko at

cool sa pakiramdam.”

Estella Balisong chose white and stated “I think its white beacuase wla kang makikitang

karumihan and hindi sya masakit tingnan you can also add any color that you want para maging

colorful sya, we also know that colorful symbolize happiness.” Julianna Gonzales also answered

Rhosemae Gutay go for red and claimed that “Red, kasi everytime na may celebration laging

Another one was Hazel

Garcia who said that “Red, because red is representing love then if you have love you make feel

happy.”

Few of the respondents picked pink of them was Ruth Pamplonan, According to her “pink,

The last respondent was Rico Emmanuel del Mundo who stated that heis nhappy color was

The answer of the respondents showcases their choice of color when it comes to stimulizing

happiness. 7 out of 20 respondents stated that yellow stimulates happiness, followed by blue

wherein, 5 out of 20 respondents said that it is their happy color. White, pink, and red got 2 out of

20 respondents respectively. On the other hand only one respondent answered orange, while

another one answered very broadly and stated that her happy color are bright colors.

According to American Psychological Association (2009), mood is an emotional state that may

last anywhere from a few minutes to several weeks.

2. What color stimulates sadness? Why?

According to Katherine Fesalbon the color that stimulate sadness is “Dark color – dill.”

However, the other respondents answer is like Trisha Esperon answered the color that stimulate

Another idea from

Ian Galang “Black, parang nagrepresent ng balack ng kalungkutan at pagiging mag-isa.’’ Almost

of the respondent’s answered is Black likewise to Rose Ann Rendon said that “For me color black

stimulates sadness because it’s look like walang patutunguhan sa buhay ko.” For Estella Balisong

“I think color black, because whenever I see black color I always think na it’s dirty and hindi

kaaya-aya tignan and walang buhay sa lahat ng color.” Marianna Aguda stated “Black, siguro kasi

kapag malungkot ako pakiramdam ko black & whites mundo ko ganon.” For Julianna Gonzales

“Black darkest color that makesme feel empty and sad at the same time.” Another answered from

For Rhosemae Gutay “Black kasi it is symbol as darkness.” For Ronald Orido

“Black because many Filipino wear black if their love ones died, so for me that is my basis why

black is a sad color.” Seth Madrid “Black dahil sobrang bigat sa pakiramdam kapag nakakakita

ako ng ganitong kulay.” Hazel Garcia said that “Black, dahil pag nakikita ko ang kulay na ito

feeling ay may namatayan o may nagdadalamhati.” Erika Millera said “Black kasi ito yung kulay

na pang kadiliman lamang ang iyong makikita.” Pro Shaina Saavedra “Black para sakin kasi black

is dark which is parang nagsysymbolizes ng losing hope, pain, sadness, lahat ng negative na

Lastly, for Rochelle Lanceta “Black, kasi kadalasan nakikita

Few of the respondents picked the color white was Marie Rose Ramos according to her “White

walang buhay walang sigla.”

According to Kiemberly Lagare “The stimulates sadness naman para sakin ay brown kase

problema haha ewan basta yun yon.”

One of the respondents who told that color Gray stimulates sadness is Felice Moncayo

according to her that “Gray it is an emotionless color, the color gray also symbolizes sadness.” For

Ruth Pamplona the color that stimulate sadness to her is “Violet, according dun san na-iresearch

ko ang violet ay ginagamit pag sa patay and also symbolizes loneliness.”

The answer of the respondents according to the color that stimulates their sadness, 16 out of

20 chose color Black that stimulates sadness next the color White, Brown, Gray and Violet 1 out

of 20.

Big company logos are red for they not

only get our attention, but they also get our blood pumping.

rown, Gray and Violet 1 out of 20.

3. What color triggers anger? Why

According to Ian Galang “Red. Kasi parang halos lahat ang tingin sa red ay nagrerepresent

ng galit. Tsaka pagnagagalit yung isang tao madalas namumula yung mukha o kaya namumula

yung tenga kaya siguro dun nangaling yung concept na red yung nagrepresent ng galit.” Trisha

Esperon “Red kasi normally nman talaga eh laging red ang para sa mga nagagalit at saka pag nainit

ang ulo natin, di ba pag mainit laging red ang kulay so that's why.” Kiemberly Lagare says “The

dugo mo which is color red yung blood lol.” For Julianna Gonzales “Red, kasi kapag naiinis o

nagagalit ang isang tao, madalas namumula like me.” Marianna Aguda “Red, when I see this color

especially when I’m mad, it increases my heart rate.” The answer of Felice Moncayo is likely to

Marianna’s answer “Red, it represents anger, when I'm mad, my blood pressure increases.”

Vanessa Barrion said “Red, kase kakulay sya ng dugo parang galit ung pinahihiwatig.” For Ronald

Orido “RED! because madaming tao kapag nagagalit namumula at tska yung reaction ng angry sa

Facebook color red. For Katherine Fesalbon

the color triggers anger “Red, color red si anger sa inside out na movie at pag sa toro red rin ang

gamit.”

Erika

Milelera said “Red, kasi kapag tayo ay nagagalit namumula tayo.” To Rico del Mundo he said

“Para sa akin, ang kulay na pula ang magsisimbolo sa galit. Ang pula ay kadalasang ginagamit

upang magpahayag ng matinding emosyon o damdamin lalo na kung ito ay tungkol sa galit dahil

ito ay may matingkad na kulay.” And lastly, Rochelle Lanceta says “Red, kasi it symbolizes rage

and blood.”

Few respondents believe that color orange triggers anger was Rose Ann Rendon she said

“Color orange, it's look like prison but at the same time it's symbolize hope.” the another answered

“I think it’s orange because I don't like orange color and sakit nyang tignan to the point na

nakakairita sya.” Estella Balisong said. For Rhosemae Gutay “Orange? I don't know, yun kasi

Two of the respondents told “Black, hindi kaaya-aya ang kulay” according to Marie Rose

Ramos. However, Shaina Saavedra stated that “Black again because once na nagagalit ka puro

For Hazel Garcia the color that triggers her anger is “Yellow, because I'm so irritated when I

see this color especially when the sun hit this”

The scales for the color of the respondents that trigger their anger, 14 out of 20 picked the

color red, followed by the color orange 3 out 20, for color black 2 out 20 respondents and 1 out of

20 chose yellow.

For example, when we look at red, it does increase our heart

rate. It is a stimulating color. This goes back to caveman days of fire and danger and alarm.

4. What color is the most pleasing to the eyes? Why?

Merie Rose Ramos said that pastel colors are the most pleasing to eyes. . However, some

respondents gave specific colors for instance Ian Galang he said “Light Blue. Kasi nakaka good

mood yung kulay dahil sa light color nito.” Estella Balisong “Well for me I think it's light blue,

because light blue is my favorite color and hindi sya masakit tignan.” and for Rochelle Lanceta

the most color pleasing to the eyes is light blue according to her “Light blue, napakapayapa na

tingnan sa mata lalo na at kaulay nito ang kalangitan kapag maaraw.” and the color baby pink

which is like a pastel color was picked by Ruth Pamplona because “Baby pink, kasi yung baby

Another color that was picked by some respondents is white, for Rose Ann Rendon she

chose that color because accroding to her, “White, because it's look like Angel in my eyes parang

langit.” For Kiemberly Lagare, “Para sakin the most pleasing color to the eyes is white, kase

sobrang simple lang nya sobrang linis at napakapayapang tingnan.” Another idea from Hazel

Garcia is “White, because is a symbol of cleanliness and purity.” For Erika Millera “White, dahil

ito ay napaka simpleng tingnan.” Vannessa Barrion also opted white, “White, kasi ang linis

tingnan, maliwanag, nagpapahiwatig ng kapayapaan.” Rhosemae Gutay answered white for she

The last respondent who answered white was Katherin Fesalbon she stated, “white-clean look”

The color blue is the most pleasing color to eyes of Trisha Esperon because “Blue kasi for

Mundo also had the same answer wherein he elaborated, “Para sa akin, ang kulay na blue ang

One of the respondents chose the color pink, according to Marianna Aguda “Pink. A very

calm and feminine color. It’s lovely”

Julianna Gonzales picked the color yellow because that color is most pleasing to her eyes

she said why she choices that color because “yellow, kase para sakin ito ay nagpapakita ng hope

and of course sunshine”

Some of the Grade Eleven students believe that green is the most pleasing to the eyes.

According to Felice Moncayo, “Green, it has a warm and cool color and is pleasing to the eye.”

and for Seth Madrid “Green dahil nakaka-relax tignan. Masarap sa mata.” Ronald Orido said that

it is green, “Green! Because even though green is my favorite color, green represents nature and

nature is good in our sight so, Green for me is the most pleasing in my eyes.”

Seven (7) out of 20 respondents claimed that white is the most pleasing in the eyes, followed

by pastel colors which was chosen by five (5) out of 20 respondents. Next, green which got

three(3) out of 20. Then, blue that was picked by two (2) out of 20 respondents. Lastly, pink,

yellow, and red which got one(1) vote respectively.

On the other hand, Sally Agustin, Ph.D (2015), believes that the most important thing to know

about colors, and our emotional response to them, has to do with colors’ saturation and brightness.

Saturation is how pure a color is. Less saturated colors are more grayish, so khaki green is less
GRADE ELEVEN
DEPARTMENT
J.V. PAGASPAS STREET, TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS * (043) 778 - 1045 SCHOOL OF CHARACTER DRIVEN LEADER

saturated than Kelly green.

5. What color makes you feel relaxed? Why?

Julianna Gonzales and Katherine Fesalbon said that the color makes them feel relaxed are

colors!!” Julianna said but Katherine says “Pastel colors - warm look” However, Estella Balisong

picked the color light blue. According to her,“Well light blue, because whenever I see light blue

it calms me and help me to relax.”

The other respondents like Trisha Esperon believes that green is the most relaxing color,

“Green kasi halimbawa ang mga puno at damo sa paligid ntin di ba green sila so pag tinitingnan

natin ung mga un parang ang sarap sa feeling, parang wla kang problema.” According to

Kiemberly Lagare, “The color that makes me feel relaxed ay Green kase yun ang kulay ng nature

colors ganeeern!” Also for Ronald Orido, “Green also, because as said in Q4 green represents for

me as nature so i feel so relaxed when I see Green color.” For Seth Madrid, “Green dahil nakaka-

relax tignan. Masarap sa mata.” While Hazel Garcia claimed that, “Green, dahil hindi sya

masakit sa mata at nakakarelaxed titigan. For Erika Millera the color taht makes her feel relaxed

is also green, “Green, kasi kung makikita natin para syang kagubatan na wala kang makikita

kundi mga puno at makakalanghap ka ng sariwang hangin.” and the last respondent who

answered green was Rico del Mundo. According to him, “Ang kulay na green ang nagpapa

The other color that was chosen by the respondents is color blue. For Ian Galang, “Blue.

Kasi kulay ng tubig eh blue. Kaya parang nakakakalma tingnan yung kulay.” Shaina Saadvera

said that, “Blue kasi ang blue na color ay napakacalm like ocean and sky.” Rochelle Lanceta also

opted for blue because according to her, “Blue, kasi parang tubig napaka easy sa mata at

napakadalisay pagmasdan.” and also Rhosemae Gutay tell us that the color she feel relaxed on is

withing the color range of blue,“Sky blue, kasi minsan pag may problema ko or something, ang

According to Rose Ann Rendon when she see the color white she feels relaxed, she

explained that,“White also because it's look like heaven for me.” Also Felice Moncayo answered

white because, “White, it makes me feel calmed and relaxed because of its clear and pure color.”

and for Vanessa Barrion she chose white because for her,“White ganon din nagpapahiwatig ng

One respondent who picked the color mint green was Merie Rose Ramos. According to

her,“mint green, kase nakakarefresh ang kulay.”

One respondent claimed that when see the color black she feels relaxed. Marianna Aguda

stated that, “Black. Even though it’s the color for being sad and empty, somehow it gives me the

feeling of relaxation.”

For Ruth Pamplona she goes for baby pink,“Same as 1(baby pink) and 4 (baby pink)

dull.

Seven (7) out of the 20 respondents claimed that green is the most relaxing color, followed

by blue which got four (4) votes. Next, color white which was chosen by three (3) out of 20

respondents. Then pastel colors that was picked by two (2) out of 20 respondents. Lastly, light

blue, mint green, black, and baby pink got one (1) vote each.

However,
GRADE ELEVEN
DEPARTMENT
J.V. PAGASPAS STREET, TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS * (043) 778 - 1045 SCHOOL OF CHARACTER DRIVEN LEADER

Wollard does think that colors can make everyone feel the same, or close to the same mood.

According to Wollard, pink reduces aggression, which is why the walls of the jail cells in Seattle

prisons are pink.

More recent research conducted by Carruthers, Morris, Tarrier, and Whorwell (2010) focused

on mood-color associations with the use of new color wheel instrument they developed specifically

for their study.

Participants from all three groups

showed similar responses on what colors were their favorites and most drawn to, but in comparison

to the healthy group, the anxious and depressed groups had significantly different responses to

mood-color association and most often chose variations of gray to describe their mood (Caruthers

et. al., 2010).

Eric, John, and Paraag’s (2007) main point in their study is about color psychology is that color

has both a physiological and psychological effect. For example, green makes people feel relaxed

because it relaxes their muscles and makes them breathe deeper and more slowly. Furthermore,

blue lowers blood pressure, which makes one feel calm. Eric, John, and Paraag conclude that color

affects one’s mood because of what it does to the body.

6. Do you think a colorful room will enable you to study well? Why?
GRADE ELEVEN
DEPARTMENT
J.V. PAGASPAS STREET, TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS * (043) 778 - 1045 SCHOOL OF CHARACTER DRIVEN LEADER

Here’s the opinion of respondents about the question, for Ian Galang,“I think no. Kasi

parang nakakadistract yung masyadong makulay yung room. Tsaka may ibang kulay na ang sakit

sa paningin.” For Julianna Gonzales,“No, kasi kapag sa isang colorful na lugar ako nag-aral,

Aguda, “No, I don’t think i’ll be able to focus more when studying because I see too much color.

It’s distracting and it makes me lose all of my concentration.”Vanessa Barrion also said no

because, “No, kase ang sakit sa mata pag iba iba ang kulay hindi sya nakakarelaxed tapos ang

init sa pakiramdam.”Ronald Orido disagreed with the question and claimed that, “No, I prefer 1

plain color (green)” Also for Hazel Garcia its a no. According to her “i feel distracted. Ruth

Pamplona contested the concept and explained that,“No, kasi it depends on the color plus para

beige and white color, kasi mas nakakapag-aral ako ng ayos.” For Erika Millera, “No, kasi

According to

Shaina Saadvera, “For me its a no because it should be 1 or 2 color lang kasi pag sobra ng dami

Moncayo declared that “No, it will only distract me and I'm not a kid anymore, simple color is

enough for me to be able to study better.”

Katherine Fesalbon and Seth Madrid sttled with “yes” as their answer. On the other hand

some respondents like Rose Ann Rendon explained their answer, Rendon said, “Yes, para sakin

mas prepare Kong mag-aral kapag makulay ang aking paligid”. For Estella Balisong, “Yes,

because it can help me to concentrate and focus.” According to Merie Rose Ramos, “Oo!

design da room kesa sa tinuturo” and the last respondent who answered yes was Rico del Mundo

There are two respondents who answered that it may be a yes or a no. For Trisha Esperon,

“Depende kasi kapag masyadong OA ung pagkacolorful nya parang madidistract ka at ang

panget sa paningin mas maganda kung mas simple lng ang pagka colorful nya” and Kiemberly

Lagare stated, “Para sakin wala naman yun sa kung anong kulay ang nasa silid as long as

nakakapag aral ka ng maayos okay na yun pero bonus na din yung colorful na room kase

maiinspire ka lalo sa kung ano yung ginagawa mo.”

11 out of 20 respondents believe that it is not essential to have a colorful room in able to

gain motivation. On the other hand, six (6) out of 20 respondents believe that a colorful room

will motivate students to study well. However, two (2) respondents answered that it depends on

the situation.

Another study conducted by Airey (2006), is that color is energy, and it can have a physical,

mental, spiritual, and/or emotional effect on people. He states that black can make one feel

sophisticated and secure, but it can also make one feel depressed. Also brown can make a person

feel reliable and serious, while yellow lifts self-esteem. Therefore, Airey concludes that different

colors can have different kinds of effects on people.

From this perspective, people talk and think about abstract concepts in concrete terms grounded in

perceptual experience (i.e., they use metaphors) to help them understand and navigate their social

world (Lakoff and Johnson, 1999).

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY

CONCLUSION

Based on the outcome of the study, the following conclusions are presented and illistrated:

Althrough out the result, all of the respondents says that color can really.Influence and effect their

mood.According to them, each color have a different meaning and symbolize.

Color effect the mood of the students in a way they interact with them. Not all of the

respondents says that colorful rooms can help them to study well because the age of the

respondents are 15-16,they say that colorful rooms can distract them to study hard. They

respondents want simple colors for their rooms. The respondents also says that if they are still

young maybe colorful rooms can help them to study well.
