Rajan the driver

Abstract:

The case is about a conflict regarding 2 employees of cattle feed plant of Sagarmathi dairy .
Mr . Suresh Mohan personnel manager has to solve the conflict between Rajan the driver
having 12 years of service in plant and between Mr. Soma raju security officer having work
experience of 3 years anda 20 year veteran in armed forces.

On 23rd jan 1993 somaraj was waiting for vehicle at sabjimandi and spotted plants minibus
and signalled to stop but driver rajan did not stop and he saw some unauthorised
passengers in the bus . when he came to the plant he was accosted and abused by him so on
24th January he file complaint against rajan and urged managemen to take strong action
against him as he did not stop the bus and carrying unauthorized people and also abusing of
him in public .

The general manager issued showcause and then rajan gave his account as he was coming
back to the plant he was asked by some school children to carry them back . he also said
that he saw the signal by soma raju but observed somaraju was drunk and did not stop the
bus.

Somaraju responded as he was not drunk and its a ploy to cover up rajan’s mistake and
added how he was abused and also said he saw adults in the van apart from children

On 30th jan GM asked suresh to look in to the issue and transferred rajan to production
department.

Analysis:

The transfer of rajan who has a good name amoung the workers resulted in agitation of
employee union who have raised their concern and gave an ultimatum to either solve the
case quickly to reinstate rajan in his previous position or else they will teach a lesson . the
security officer is also not happy with the way management is treating this case and
demanded justice as just transfer is not sufficient .

Problem:

Issue between two employees turned in bigger issue with union and management and also
bad blood between the two employees . mr mohan has to resolve the issue as smooth
functioning of cattle feed plant is ensured .

Mohan should also think as to prevent further conflict between union and management
and also think not give dominance to the unions over managerial decision and should
maintain order.
Alternatives:

* to take into account of somaraju as there is a mistake by part of rajan to carry


unauthorized personnel even not consindering humanitarian ground and according to some
adults which contradicts the rajans explaination and disagreement from the superior and
abusing should taken into consideration. Here somaraju has a good 20 year military carrer
and he was never seen drunk in the working hours should also be considered

* to take into account of rajans as a 12 year service member respected by his fellow workers
and has support of the union who has sometimes seen carrying women of near by villagers
when there is no transport .

Course of action :

Mr. Mohan should first prioritize to reduce the agitation of the union . inorder to do that he
has to approach rajan along with union head and try to explain teh change in his position is
necessary and itis temporary and whence the investigation is completed along the good
sides of rajan he would get his old job along with necessary compensation if any and also
state the breach in rules as to not to carry unauthorised personnel and abusing of the
security officer is a reach .

In the mean time Rajan should be asked to submit the proofs about the state of condition of
Mr . somaraju which he said he can and assure him if he (somaraju) found guilty as to being
drunk and issuing false report he would be condemned or punished accordingly and urge
the union to continue smooth function of plan till this investigation is completed . And also
suggest to say sorry to somaraju for the public abusal which is a reach in any condition.

Mr. Mohan should also meet with somaraju and ask him to produce proof or person that
can collaborate his story and the late reporting of him by a day can be seen as gulty person
trying to cook a story .and should assure him that if rajan is found guilty he would be
punished but for now transfer is appropriate form of punishment.
