City of Ember: Movie Review

The “City of Ember”, is built under the ground, designed to keep the citizens
protected for generations to come. The title “City of Ember” sounds common. As the title
heard, the first thought is ‘probably, the setting of the movie is in the City”. Though the
introduction of the movie is interesting, the line “on the day the world ended, the fate of
the mankind was carried in the small metal box” diverted the thought into the said metal
box. The movie is slightly interesting, adventurous, and entertaining. It has a twist, and
make the viewer puzzle.

The story began when the world is ended. How ironic. Underground city is built
for the good of all mankind. The scientists and architects believed that “Growing up with
no knowledge of the world outside, future generation will be spared thorough what
they’ve lost”. The massive generator sustained the needs of underground city of Ember,
and only lasts for 200 years; the population seems to consist of 300 people. As light
flicker and fade, only the two youths, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow find a way out of
the place they called, “Dark City”.

The city of Ember is built for the good of all mankind. The scientist believed that it
is the only hope for the future generations. It is to teach all the mankind to value more
what they have. Living in the world like the city of Ember is limited, all should be
conserved. Everything has limitations; the foods, the generator that sustained the needs
of everyone. City of Ember make the people of it experienced how the life is, when what
they have lost. It teaches them to protect the future generations.

The movie is not more interesting for most of the adult for it is somehow
adventurous and not catchy to them for they are more likely to serious and prefer in
reality story. It is good for the youths, and to more interested in adventure. It is exciting
for those who are like to explore and curious. Though it has a dark set for it was called
the “Dark City”, however, it has interesting flow even though the whole setting of the
movie focus in the underground city of Ember, well, of course. Aside from that, the
movie also focuses only in the two characters, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, the son
of a single father and the daughter of already passed away parents. Her dad drowned in
an escaped attempt with Doon’s dad, Loris. In the movie, the builders gave the metal
box to the first mayor of Ember, displaying red digital readout, which counts down from
200 years, which maybe at this sets point it is safe to return to the surface. Thinking of
having advanced technology, having the lifespan of batteries within 200 years is
unbelievable. How could the metal box still counting down until its very last year? It is
difficult to try understanding everything in the movie. In addition, the people lived in
canned foods. The storerooms look about as big as those average supermarkets. It is
impossible to store enough foods for about 200 years. And the light bulb that used it the
city, how did those light lasts about 200 years without even gets broken. Learning that
the city is under the ground, how is it possible that for 200 years, there is no even
earthquake, they are lucky. Also, no one has opened the generator, the control room.
They don’t even bother to open that door. At one point, Lina and Doon get into the boat
as small at a bathtub together with Lina’s little sisters has survived the two waterwheels.
They do not even get scared, thinking that no one of them know how to swim,
unimaginable. On the other hand, Lina at one point uses a blue crayon and draw
something like sky, the movie gives no idea how she knows there is a sky and it is blue.
At the last part of the movie, she even said that “they are right, there’s nothing but
darkness”. Another thing is, it is a future world. They even have a long lasting metal box
with running counts down of time, but they do not have computers.

The movie is future realization and helpful for everyone to realize how important
to conserve and protect our future generation. It is a good movie. However, movie has
also not good part. It terms of the set, it is entertaining, but then, unimaginable scene is
not good to insert. Some giant species is believable for it could be concluded that
something happened it the surface of the earth. Having more twist and problem solving
for more curiosity and excitement must be added, for example, more exploration for the
two youths together with Lina’s sister, Puppy; and also, more puzzling scenes. Having
part two is better, so that the first part is more understood to everyone. Overall, it is a
great movie.
