This study aimed to find out the relationship between socio-economic status

and academic performance in English of the grade 7 students of San Fernando

National High School, S/Y 2017-2018.

This study looked up into the following areas: (1) the academic performance

of grade 7 students in English 7, (2) the socio economic status of the grade 7

students in terms of family income and parent's occupation and (3)the

relationships between (a) family income and academic performance (b) parent's

occupation and academic performance.

This study employed the descriptive method of research and used survey

technique and documentary analysis in gathering data. The respondents of the

study were the 98 grade 7 students coming from the six grade 7 sections namely

grade 7 Jupiter, grade 7 Mars, grade 7 Venus, grade 7 Earth, grade Mercury, and

grade 7 Saturn of San Fernando National High School, San Fernando, Camarines

Sur.
The research revealed that 53 of the 98 students belong to a family that has

an income of below 5,000 while only 5 students have a family income of 15,000-

20,000. Also, 64% of the students’ mothers are unemployed while 21.43% of

students’ fathers are skilled agricultural, forestry, and fishery workers or working

in elementary occupations.

The study also found out that 43 of the 98 students have a fairly satisfactory

grade which is from 75-79. Furthermore, the average grade of the students is

still higher compared to the expected national mean which is 75.

The research also showed that the obtained value for family income and

academic performance which is 12.05 is lower than the critical value of 31.410.

This means that there is no significant relationship between family income and

academic performance in English 7.

It also revealed that the obtained value for mothers’ occupation and

academic performance which is 13.92 is lower than the critical value of 36.42.

This also means that there is no significant relationship between mothers’

occupation and academic performance.

Moreover, it also turned out that the obtained value of 37.54 for fathers’

occupation and academic performance is lower than the critical value of 46.194
which suggests that there is also no significant relationship between fathers’

occupation and academic performance.
