Final Paper Reflection

In modern times, media has grown and created a network that has extended past

predictions of potential when the industry first began. Media has not been limited to the

conventional practices disseminating information and has become a real resource for society.

However, a key thing I have learned is that to function correctly, media institutions require

independence from stakeholders in the industry. I have also developed a special interest in the

field of social media which has evolved to become a necessity in modern society.

While undertaking the course, I gained an understanding of the necessity of the

establishment of regulations to keep media impartial. These rules may take the form of licensing,

internal and self-regulation. The control measures help to avoid the abuse of the rights of those

consuming the media and ensure a golden standard that media bodies need to adhere to when

they deliver quality products and services.

Social media tools have captivated my interest for the way in which they have somewhat

replaced traditional media platforms. For instance, school-going children are now required to

show proficiency in the use of social media apps such as Skype and email. Social media has

revolutionized the communications industry and people from different parts of the world can use

it to interact through virtual platforms such as Facebook. However, social media has equally

caused many problems in society, with cases of depression and suicide skyrocketing. Another

issue is fake news which provides misleading information with the potential to cause harm.

These developments go against the main objective of media bodies to stay impartial and provide

accurate information to the public. This course has ultimately shown me how media is

interconnected and how these concepts can be investigated to get a better understanding of

society.
