VOCABULARY: Family Relationships
Let’s learn about family members. It is important to understand that when you have children, you are a parent. If
you are a male parent, you are a father. If you are female parent, you are a mother. If one of your children is a
boy, he is your son. If one of your children is a girl, she is your daughter. When a couple get married, the man is
the husband and the woman is his wife. A brother and a sister both have the same parents.
Read and listen. Then listen again and repeat.
In informal English, many people use the expressions MY BABY SISTER or MY BABY BROTHER for a younger
sister or brother and MY BIG SISTER or MY BIG BROTHER for an older sister or brother.
In British English, MUM or MUMMY (used by young children) are often used for mother and DAD is often used for
father.
MORE FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS:
The in-laws are the members of the family of the person you are married to:

Father-in-law: the father of your spouse

Mother-in-law: the mother of your spouse

Son-in-law: the husband of your daughter

Daughter-in-law: the wife of your son

Brother-in-law: the husband of your sister

Sister-in-law: the wife of your brother

GRAMMAR: Be – Question with WHO

WHO is used especially in questions as the subject or object of a verb, when asking which person or people, or
when asking what someone’s name is.

WHO + IS / ARE ? Examples:

WHO am I? I am Luzia.
WHO are you? I am your daughter.
WHO is he? He’s my dad.

GRAMMAR: Adjectives to describe people

This is a list of useful words to describe someone’s appearance, but pay attention, pretty is generally not used for
men. Cute for adults means attractive in informal spoken English. In most English-speaking countries, it can be 4. SHORT
rude to refer to someone directly as old.
