English Should be Taught in Kindergarten

In my point of view, English doesn’t need to be taught in kindergarten. There are two reasons
besides my stand: responsibility as priority and local language. Nowadays, only a view
people who can speak local language fluently. In addition, local language is our heritage that
we should take care of it. Whereas, people are on fire in learning international language,
especially English. They forget about their responsibility to take care of their own language.

Firstly, local language is Indonesian heritage that we should save. Therefore, the new
generation can speak it in daily life. Learning international language, English is very good
because English is international language, everyone use it to speak with other people arround
the world. In addition, Of the numerous languages in the world, English may be regarded as
the most influential and widely used, given the number of countries where it is spoken and
taught as a foreign language (Kirkpatrick, 2007; Ronen et al., 2014; Phillipson, 1998). Yet,
we should remember about owr heritage, make sure this new trend never drives you to forget
your local language. Nowdays, kindergarten students prefer learning English to local
language. For example, my brother is prefer to speak in Arabic, English or Malaysian
language than local language, Javanese even though the teacher gave materials about local
language, Javanese. A research mentions that some people show much interest in the benefits
of English education from early childhood because they think that this can maximize their
efficiency in learning English (Cho & Lee, 2009; Hu & Mckay, 2012; Jun, 2011; Nunan, 2003).
This situation make students hard to apply their local language in real conversation because
they wonted speak foreign language especially English.

Secondly, Responsibility as priority. Being responsible is very important for the new
generation of Indonesia. Therefore, instead of learning language kindergarten students should
have a responsibiity to fix their problems or needs. The words ‘problems’ and ‘needs’ here is
not as strict as adult problems and needs. It means kindergarten students should have a basic
understanding about their responsibility in real life, for example sharpen their pencils, prepare
their stationary and books in the bag, wash their own sock, tidy up their toys after playing,
and etc. Responsibility is the key to face the world. Even if a person can speak a lot of
foreign language but he/she haven’t responsible then that will be the end of their career.
Therefore, instilling a sense of responsibility should start at kindergarten.

In summary, Learning English is good. Yet, being responsible and learning local language is
the priority. It is because local language is our heritage that we should save and implement
the values in real life. In addition, being responsible is crucial. The reason is becoming
responsible since kindergarten will helps students to face their future life. Therefore, before
learning English, kindergarten students should knows the basic of their responsibility and
local language.
