CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

It appears that the facility condition in the school setting go a long way to motivate
students to learn and be interested. Facilities in any school system range from the school
buildings, classroom, library, laboratories and toilet facilities that would likely motivate
students towards learning and interest. The status of school facilities especially in our public
secondary schools today appears to be of great concerns to educators. Experience shows that if
school facilities are efficient, students tend to have interest in learning and going to school; this
will invariably lead to good performance.

The quality of education and interest of a student depends on the condition of school
facilities. School facility refers to the buildings and grounds, parking lots, playing fields and
fixed equipment that enable learners to become more interested in going to school. It can
actually have a substantive impact on learning process. The educational process was a very
complex system. Improving school facilities, the effect on learning and educational
environment, plays an integral role in educators improving the education of the students and
providing good school facilities (Filardo, 2008). School buildings that are not in good condition
can lead to dissatisfaction of the students.

The quality of school facilities can help or hinder the interest of a student. Well-
designed buildings and pleasant surroundings can lead to better attendance and concentration
as well as motivation and self-esteem – factors which can improve performance and student
interest. A growing body of research has found that school facilities condition have a profound
impact on student outcomes and interest. With respect to the students, school facilities affect
health, behavior, engagement, learning, growth in achievement and interest.

Without adequate facilities and resources, it is extremely difficult to serve large


numbers of children with complex needs. Thus, facility quality and condition is an important
predictor of student learning and interest. The physical and emotional health of students depend
on the quality of physical location, which make establishing safe, healthy buildings essential.
The overall impact a school building has on students can be either positive or negative,
depending upon the condition of the building. School facilities (school buildings) design
features and components have been proven to have a measurable influence upon student
interest. There is a negative influence upon student satisfaction and interest in buildings where
deficiencies are exist.

We, the researchers has created an objectives about this research paper. The
following are the objectives or the aim of this study:

1. To measure the different factors that affects student interest and satisfaction in school
2. To create a data analysis on the results of survey
3. To give a recommendation regarding with the condition of school facilities
4. To create a summarization about the relationship of two variables; and
5. To state a conclusion or generalization of this study
Research Questions

An effective school facility is responsive to the changing programs of


educational delivery, and should provide a physical environment that is comfortable, safe,
secure, accessible, well ventilated and aesthetically pleasing that enable students to be
interested and satisfied. The state of school facilities in public secondary school today appears
to be of great concern to students, parents and all educators. A close observation of student’s
performance and interest seems to indicate lack of school and physical facilities and an
enabling learning environment that could motivate secondary students towards good
performance. The school facility is much more than a passive container of the educational
process: it is, rather, an integral component of the conditions of learning and an interest of
secondary students.

The main specific research question guiding this study is: Does the condition of
the school facilities like buildings influence student interest? The main specific research
question is supported by the following sub-questions that will guide the study:

1) How do school facilities condition affect learning and student interest?


2) Does the interest of a students depend only on the condition of school facilities? If yes,
expand your answer.
3) Does buildings that are lack of maintenance affect student interest in going to school?
Give further explanation.

Scope and Delimitation

This research will be conducted in Bandera National High School. The


respondents are comprised of fifty(50) students from this school. Their ages are ranges from
twelve(12) to eighteen(18) years old. We will give the questionnaires to some students from
each grade level and after that we are going to interpret their responses through the use of
statistics. It takes only short time for the respondents to answer since questionnaires are in a
survey form.

In conducting this research, there are strengths and weaknesses that are needed
to consider. The strengths are the following: respondents may be able to answer the
questionnaire easily since it is in a survey form, the availability of time that a respondents have
because time is an important factor that every researchers must consider.Another is that
relatively easy to analyze since it involves numbers and if the process of the study are well-
designed then we can easily generalize the findings. The weaknesses are the following: lack of
comprehension about the topic, this will be a struggle for a respondents, lack of time since the
respondents have different appointments that need to complete aside from answering the
research questionnaire. Another is that having an inaccurate outputs due to the possible errors
of the study.
Benefits and Beneficiaries

This research has a benefits that will help everyone to catch up information
about school facilities condition.It is a concerns to the people living in our community since if
the condition of school facilities are not in good then students might have no interest at going
to school at all. They want to guarantee that everyone is satisfied and safe while walking around
the school.

The beneficiaries of this study are the students, teachers, parents and the
school principal as well. The students can benefit this study because they are the ones who need
to informed with the condition of school facilities. The lack of school facilities and deficiency
can contribute to the learning environment and interest of the students. The teachers needed to
be informed by the concerning problems of the school particularly with the school facility
problems, in order for them to be enlighten with this existing issue. The parents should be
wide-awaken also about this issue to ensure the satisfaction and safety of their children.The
principal must be aware because he/she is the one who is accountable for maintaining all school
facilities and he/she must arrange annual building or site inspections, maintain buildings
(internally and externally) so that he/she meet occupational health and safety requirements,
deal with urgent repairs and maintain all essential services.
