I.ABOUT THE REGION
The Bicol Region or Bicolandia is one of the
17 regions of the Philippines. It occupies the
Bicol Peninsula at the southeastern end of
Luzon island and some other islands.
The region is located in the southermost tip of
Luzon Island. It is bounded by Lamon Bay to
the north, Pacific Ocean to the east, and
Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west. The
northernmost province, Camarines Norte, is
bordered to the northby the province of
Quezon, thereby connecting the region to the
rest of Luzon.
It is best known for being the home of the
world's largest fish - the butanding (whale
shark) and the majestic Mayon Volcano. It
also has the other beautiful natural features
like mountains, waterfalls with lush
vegetation, and beaches that have grown
famous for water sports activities.

A.HISTORY
The Bicol region was known as Ibalon,
variously interpreted to derive form ibalio, "to
bring to the other side"; ibalon, "people from
the other side" or "people who are hospitable
and give visitors gifts to bring home"; or as a
corruption of Gibal-ong, a sitio of Magallanes,
Sorsogon where the Spaniards first landed in
1567. The Bicol River was first mentioned in
Spanish Documents in 1572. The region was
also called Los Camarines after the huts found
by the Spaniards in Camalig, Albay. No
prehistoric animal fossils have been
discovered in Bicol and the peopling of the
region remains obscure. The Aeta from
Camarines Sur to Sorsogon strongly suggest
that aborigines lived there long ago, but
earliest evidence is of middle to late Neolithic
life.

B.PROVINCES
1. ALBAY(Land Of The World's Most Perfect
Cone)
Albay is a province of the Philippines located
in the Bicol Region in Luzon. Its capital is
Legazpi City and the province borders the
Camarines Sur to the north and Sorsogon to
the south. Also to the northeast is Lagonoy
southwest is Burias Pass.
Mayon Volcano is the symbol most associated
with the province. This nearly perfectly-
shaped active volcano forms a scenic
backdrop to the capital city of Legazpi 15
kilometers to the south.
Language/Dialect
Bicol, the local dialect, constitutes a strange
variety in words and in diction among the 17
municipalities. Most puzzling is the amazing
variation among towns of many words having
the same meaning for one object or concept.
Bicol is generally spoken in Legazpi. The
people speak Tagalog fluently and can
communicate in English with ease.
Industries
The province has continued to direct its
efforts toward the development of its
industries. Of the total 6,369 manufacturing
establishments in the Bicol Region, half are
located in Albay. 48.6% of the large scale lot
are operating in Albay. Among them are the
export-oriented Isarog Pulp & Paper Mills and
Albay Industrial Development Corporation.
Agriculture, however, still accounts for the
largest share in the total production and
are the major crops.
Handicrafts are the main source of rural
income.
Albay is a major supplier of geothermal
energy to the Luzon Grid with its Tiwi
Geothermal Plant in Tiwi.
2. CAMARINES NORTE (Bicolandia's
Goldmine)
Camarines Norte is a province of the
Philippines located in the Bicol Region in
Luzon. Its capital is Daet and the province
borders Quezon to the west and Camarines
Sur to the south.
It is characterized by rolling hills and
mountains in the interior, and the fertile
plains and valleys along the coast. The land of
the province is largely within the 0-8% slope,
with 72,483 hectares or 32.95% of the total
land area.
Language/Dialect
Bicol is the major dialect spoken, along with
Tagalog and English.
Industries
Gold-mining and jewelry manufacture
continue to distinguish the province.
Agriculture and fishing are major factors in
the province's economy, and several
handicrafts and small-scale industries are
widely practiced. Tourism is insignificant,
though Daet has become a destination for
surfers.
3. CAMARINES SUR (World's Smallest Fish &
Higher Climbs)
Camarines Sur is a province of the Philippines
located in the Bicol Region in Luzon. Its capital
is Pili and the province borders Camarines
Norte and Quezon to the north, and Albay to
the south. To the east lies the island province
of Catanduanes across Maqueda Channe
Camarines Sur is home to the smallest fish in
the world and famous for its Mt. Isarog, lots
of beaches, old churches, and many splendid
attractions.
Language/Dialect
Bikol is the local and most common dialect,
with Naga Bikol as the standard version.
English and Tagalog are likewise used. A
growing number of Chinese and Muslim
communities speak their own languages.
Industries
Camarines Sur is the agro-industrial center of
Bikol, followed by trade, manufacturing, and
construction. Labor force is abundant, strong,
and efficient. Among the priority investment
sectors are marine and agriculture followed
by non-metallic mineral processing, metal
works, processed foods, beverages,
furnitures, garments, and gifts and
housewares.
With the proposed establishment of ecozones
in at least five identified locations in the
province and the intensifying campaign on the
promotion of Bicol tourism, more investors
are expected to arrive.
4. CATANDUANES (The Land of The Howling
Wind)
Catanduanes is an island province of the
Philippines located in the Bicol Region in
Luzon. Its capital is Virac and the province lies
to the east of Camarines Sur across Maqueda
Channel.
Language/Dialect
Northern Catanduanes Bicol and Southern
Catanduanes Bicol, Tagalog and English.
Industries
Major crops are rice, corn, coconut, abaca and
rootcrops. Fishing ranks second to farming as
the main source of livelihood. The province
has no major industry except cottage
industries which are abaca- and forestry-
based.
5. SORSOGON
Sorsogon is a province of the Philippines
located in the Bicol Region in Luzon. Its capital
is Sorsogon City and borders the province of
Albay to the north. Sorsogon is at the tip of
the Bicol Peninsula and faces the island of
Samar to the southeast across the San
Bernardino Strait.
Language/Dialect
Sorsoganon or Sorsogon Bikol (Bikol: Bikol
Sorsogonese) is a group of Bisakol languages
spoken in the province of Sorsogon. They are
closely related to Waray. There are two
principal varieties, which are actually separate
languages: Southern Sorsogon (also known as
Gubat and Waray) and Central Sorsogon (also
called Masbate Sorsogon).
Industries
Its principal products are abaca, copra, and
hemp. Fishing is also significant, and could be
expanded. The chief tourist attraction is
Bulusan Lake, in the crater of a volcano in a
national park. There are also springs, caves,
waterfalls, tropical vegetation, and plenty of
opportunities for water recreation and hiking.
6. MASBATE
Masbate is an island province of the
Philippines located in the Bicol Region. Its
capital is Masbate City and consists of three
major islands: Masbate, Ticao and Burias.
Language/Dialect
Masbateño is a member of the Bicol-Visayan
branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language
family spoken mainly in the province of
Masbate in the Philippines by more than
600,000 people. It is closely related to
Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and Waray-Waray.
Industries
Their principal means of livelihood are
agriculture (growing rice, maize, and
coconuts) and stock-raising, chiefly horses,
cattle, carabao, goats, pigs and poultry. There
is fishing along the coast. Gold has been
mined since the fourteenth century. There are
also deposits of silver, copper, iron,
manganese, marble, limestone, quartz, and
other minerals. There are also various cottage
industries and a significant tourist trade,
centering on the water, salt and fresh, and the
remarkably varied landscape.

II. CULTURE AND TRADITION
The Bicolano cuisine is primarily noted for the
prominent use of chili peppers and gata
(coconut milk) in its food. A classic example is
the gulay na lada, known outside the region
as Bicol Express, a well-loved dish using siling
labuyo (native small chillies) and the
aforementioned gata.
Like their other neighboring regions, Bicolanas
are also expected to lend a hand in household
work. They are even anticipated to offer
assistance after being married. On the other
hand, Bicolano men are expected to assume
the role of becoming the primary source of
income and financial support of his family.
Bicolanos are also known for being very
religious, the place is known for Senora De
Penafrancia. Bicolanos are often sweet,
regionalistic, friendly, adventurous, puts high
importance on education and social status.
Contrary to what is believed, not all Bicolanos
are fond of chili. Men often know how to
cook.

I See The World In His Face

As he wink to carry the pain
Of hard labor…he is truly bold.
I admire his valor.
I see the world in his smile
As his lips touch the thousand cheek
As he utter his children’s name
It tickles their heart deep.
V. REFLECTION, REACTION AND
FEEDBACK
The poem was all about the father who
works hard in order to feed his children.
I really admire all the father who are like
in the poem because even though they
get tired or they get sick in working, they
always think about their family’s sake.
VI. FAVORITE LINE IN THE LITERARY
PIECE
“I see the world in his eyes

Of hard labor…he is truly bold.
I admire his valor.”
These were my favorite line because even
though he is already tired and feel pained,
he still coping his work.
VII. CONNECTION
In the poem the father in the family is the
one who work in order to supply the
needs of their children. Just like the
Bicolano men, they are the one who have
the role of becoming the primary source Presenters:
of income and financial support of their
family.
