te desde 1965), mesclavam influências gregas e medievais, ainda
a imperatriz enfrentou e limitou o poderio religioso, modernizando

As primeiras cor-
tinham grande influência no país recém-independente.

mente no modelo lusitano.

formas ancestrais do espetáculo. (...)

atletas vencedores. Em Olímpia, eram ramos de oliveira;

prisioneiros políticos convenceram dirigentes germânicos a realizar
provas esportivas. Competiram pela honra de competir. Perder ou
ganhar, de concreto nada significou. A maioria, inclusive, morreu

CHUTEIRAS
A busca do melhor calçado é recorrente na história do desenvolvimento
esportivo.

fascinantes objetos humanos. Alguns dos

Its role as a partner in the development of the country and participant in all phases of the sustaina-
ble development of our cities provide the conviction that CAIXA is investing resources in expanding
and professionalizing our sports institutions and also in technical improvement and increased com-
petitiveness of our athletes, besides contributing strongly to the emergence of new athletes and new
audiences for Brazilian sports. Thus it fulfills its role as a socially responsible company.
The company strives for transparency of its sponsorship processes, ensuring the same oppor-
tunities to athletes and coaches from all regions of the country, through programs sponsoring the
Brazilian Athletics Confederation, the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation, the Brazilian Asso-
ciated Wrestling Confederation, the Brazilian Cycling Confederation and the Brazilian Paralympic
Committee, the main sports competitions and street running circuits, the Brazilian Women’s Foo-
tball Championship, in addition to men’s professional soccer leagues and tournaments.
Thus CAIXA has been working concretely towards valuing, promoting and strengthening Bra-
zil’s image and boosting our sports organizations and our athletes to achieve qualification and
performance levels comparable to worldwide sports leaders.
For these reasons, and for understanding that sponsorship actions will contribute to the disse-
mination of knowledge about the history of the sport, strengthening the interest in sport itself and
in sport activities among children and school-age youth, as well as being fully consistent with its
values and institutional goals, CAIXA has decided to sponsor the “ESPORTE MOVIMENTO “ Project
and present it in all its cultural spaces.

form of entertainment that simulated warfare activities, serving
as a way of preparation for combats and glorification of warriors in

among their preferences.

A certain contemporary apprehension regarding Roman athletic
activities interpret them as a “distortion” of what was experienced
and had been systematized by the Greeks. Supposedly that was an
emptying of the educational aspects and the development of an
instant mobilization through brutal violence. Gladiatorial practic-
es and the arenas that spread across the vast territory of the Em-
pire (best-known example is the Roman Colosseum) would be the
ultimate expression of those aspects, misguided and superficially
related to a people who supposedly only wanted warfare.
Researchers of the history of Rome have already widely repo-
sitioned and questioned those understandings, pointing out that it
is not only lack of knowledge of the rich trajectory of the Romans,
as well as an interpretation, especially from the transition of the
eighteenth to the nineteenth century, which launched detractor
looks upon Rome and many elegies upon Greece. The present has
biased look upon the past in order to justify some of its intentions.
Anyway, there is a dimension in the Roman athletic activities
that deserves to be acknowledged: the enormous competence in
sensationalizing events, mobilizing a large number of stakehold-
ers from different social strata. It is not to reiterate the mistaken
and detractoring concept of “bread and circuses”, as if the audi-

a linear way, having also to consider the wishes of the general
public. Incidentally, the press approached sporting events a lot,
as it realized its high degree of popularity.
Two major reasons help understand the end of the big festivals
in the medieval period: the centrality of Christianity, with its
rigid religious notions that disavowed both much larger body
exhibitions, as any activity that resembled pagan cults, and
the disintegration of the political units with the end of the Ro-
man Empire.

Some pioneering festivals, given their importance, deserve great-
er attention; they were harbingers of a resumption of those events
that were once so important to certain societies.
In 1612 (estimated date), the Cotswold Olimpick Games were
first held, organized by a lawyer named Robert Dover, in the Brit-

event received the approval and encouragement of King James I,

begins to be outlined.
These games exist to this day (after having been discontin-

combined the Greek and medieval influences, highlighting the
military character of the competitions. There were also various
artistic activities. Some historians suggest that Shakespeare had
participated in some of the editions (information, however, dis-

Another important pioneer festival was organized in 1766 in
St. Petersburg, following an indication of the Empress Catherine

century begins to settle in Brazil the sport that would become its
king of sports: football (aka soccer), which had multiple entries
into the country (that is, it arrived at similar periods in various
cities) and was quickly seized by several social strata (and not
only elites, but also the most popular ones.)
A PECULIARITY OF BRAZILIANS
If in Brazil the development of sports was relatively quick, espe-

custom that came from the colonial period, when major festivals
of the Portuguese Royal Family were held. With Brazil becoming
independent, it acquired a more entrepreneurial form and was
promoted in many cities, at first with a mixed program (following
the Spanish way, with the death of animals, and the Portuguese
way, without the death of animals and with the participation of
pitchforks), and later on following only in the Portuguese way.
Even surrounded by criticism, in the transition from the nine-
teenth to the twentieth century, bullfights came to be considered a
sport. In Rio de Janeiro they were banned in 1907, but persisted in
many other cities, only being banned nationally in 1934, with a fed-
eral decree that established measures for the protection of animals.
The same legislation also banned another very common prac-
tice with animals in some cultural traditions: the cockfights,
which also came to be considered a sport.

“At certain times, in certain societies, theater had a large social function: the
whole city would gather in a common experience – knowledge of their own

sport is a large modern institution poured in ancestral forms of spectacle. (...)
All of our modern sport is contained in that spectacle of another era, heir to the

Triumph
gold B ay L eaf
For centuries and in the most distinct ways, crowns made of
different plants were used to reward winning athletes.
In Olympia, they used olive branches; rye and pine in Corinth;
bay in Delphi; celery in Nemea. Those awards were simple.
However, they were accompanied by more valuable ones,
by material benefits, privileges to say the least. The gold leaf
mentions such dubiousness: the simple surrounded by the valuable.
One cannot tell exactly what motivates some competitors more:
honor or metal? Probably both.

T he Paper M edal
When seeing this artifact made of paper, one might think that this is a childish
object of a modest competition. It is not. The piece is a medal made of paper
issued on the occasion of one of the most impressive accomplishments in
the history of sports: Games that took place in a concentration camp during
World War II. In Gross Born, political prisoners convinced the german
leaders to hold sports events. Those prisoners competed for the honor
of competing. Losing or winning meant nothing in concrete terms.
By the way, most of them died when the camp was evacuated.
More than a medal, they won the right to memory, a record in history.

CLEATS
The search for the best footwear is one of the recurrences in the
history of sports development. It was quickly realized how much
they interfere with the performance: they must be comfortable
and facilitate motor skills of each modality. Even within each sport,
different types of footwear are used. 100 meter runners do not wear
the same running shoes as 10,000 meter runners.
BALLS
Small, medium and large, made from different
materials, and prepared today with advanced
technology. Balls never lose the status of being one
of the most fascinating objects created by man.
Some of the most popular sports in the world are
practiced with balls: they can be round and kicked
(as in football), some are oval, hurled and carried
by hand (as in rugby), there are some round and
touched or thrown by hand (as in volleyball and

TROPHIES
If medals represent the consecration
of individuals, trophies are the
memory of collective achievement,
belonging to teams and clubs,
commonly displayed in special
rooms dedicated to the memory
of associations. Images of
athletes raising trophies are among
the most famous sports photographs,
a ritual moment that marks the
pinnacle of the joy of the winners.
