The e-Golf – Das e-Auto

After the production of more than 30 million vehicles with combustion engines, the Golf is now being introduced
for the first time with a standard electric-only drive.
The e-Golf can be identified by its distinctive, arc-shaped LED daytime running lamp in the front bumper, and by
the LED headlights which are being installed as standard for the first time.
The high-capacity, high-voltage components and the technology used for the remaining assembly groups
guarantee both safe and convenient mobility. The electric drive motor boasts a power output of 85 kW and
develops a maximum torque of 270 Nm from standstill. It reaches 100 km/h after 10.4 seconds.
Improved aerodynamics and much lower tyre rolling resistance compared to the combustion-engine Golf
contribute to the low consumption, amounting to just 12.7 kWh/100 km. This is equivalent to a diesel fuel
consumption of 1.3 litres.
Depending on the vehicle payload and driving style, the range is between 130 and 190 kilometres, powered by a
nominal lithium-ion high-voltage battery energy of 21.2 kWh.
More detailed information about the technology used and the product characteristics will be revealed over
the course of this Self-study Programme.

Underbody
The underbody features a new design which allows installation of the high-voltage battery, also meeting the stricter
impact requirements this involves.
At the rear of the vehicle, additional reinforcing panels were installed in the rear longitudinal members and on the
inner wheel housings. There are two multiple part, ultra-high-strength hot-formed cross members below the rear
underbody.

1-speed gearbox 0CZ

The 1-speed gearbox installed in the e-Golf is comparable with the 1-speed gearbox in the e-up! All components,
and in particular the gearbox lubrication, have been modified for the higher torque and the higher input speed. As
was the case in the e-up!, noise reduction was an important design target for this gearbox.

The selector lever bracket differs between left-hand

An angular offset of approx. 4° is produced on the

faces the left, and in left-hand drive vehicles, the

The angular offset creates a sufficient distance

between the selector rod and the printed circuit for

Stationary air conditioning

The e-Golf provides the option of stationary air conditioning. Stationary air conditioning functions independently of
the selected driving mode. It is not possible to operate the air conditioning system using the controls while the
stationary air conditioning is running. The LED for the AC button lights up and the buttons are inactive. Once the
vehicle is ready to drive, the stationary air conditioning is deactivated and the air conditioning system can only be
operated using the controls in the vehicle. The e-Golf features two versions of the stationary air conditioning:

• Instant air conditioning using a smartphone app

• Timer programming using the e-Manager

Timer programming
The stationary air conditioning can be activated using the timer program featured by the e-Manager. If a
preferred mode of air conditioning has been pre-selected for the departure time, the Climatronic control unit J255
is activated by the control unit for high-voltage battery charging unit J1050 one hour before departure.
It calculates the time required for air conditioning, sends the value to the control unit for high-voltage battery
charging unit J1050 and is then deactivated again. Once the calculated start time for the air conditioning has
been reached, the Climatronic control unit J255 is reactivated and the stationary air conditioning starts up.
The maximum power which can be consumed for stationary air conditioning is limited to 3.3kW by the charge
voltage control unit for high-voltage battery J966.
If the stationary air conditioning was activated using the e-Manager, any other timer inputs which may still be
stored are ignored. Any changes made using the e-Manager are not synchronised with the smartphone.

Heated windscreen Z2
In the interest of energy efficiency, an electric heated windscreen with heating wires is installed as standard.
When the vehicle is starting to fog up, the windscreen heating is activated first. If a maximum power output of
390 W is not sufficient, the electrical air conditioner compressor V470 is switched on as well.
There is also the option of installing a climate windscreen instead of the heated windscreen.
There are two ways to activate the heated windscreen:

• Manual activation using the Discover Pro display

• Automatic activation using the Climatronic control unit J255

The windscreen heater can also be automatically activated using the Climatronic control unit J255 if the dew point
exceeds a defined value. The dew point is the temperature at which the humidity condenses into water droplets.
The temperature and humidity at the windscreen are registered by the humidity sender for air conditioning system
G260, and, when necessary, the windscreen heater is switched on automatically. This only occurs in “AUTO” mode
and may be more economical in terms of energy than switching to the electrical air conditioner compressor.
This function can be stopped at any time by pressing the heated windscreen switch E180 (soft key).

Caution! Hazardous electric voltage!

Please note that work on the electric vehicle may only be carried out by qualified employees.
Improper handling of the high-voltage equipment may lead to life-threatening situations.
AC voltages of 25 volts or more and DC voltages of 60 volts or more are dangerous for
humans. Therefore, please observe the safety information in the service literature, the vehicle
diagnostic tester and on the vehicle itself.

The LED dipped beam headlight module must generate a beam of light which satisfies the legal requirements.
LED modules 1 and 2 ensure this is achieved. LED module 1 generates the horizontal line and the near field light
distribution, while LED module 2 generates the 15° ramp (far field light distribution). This is achieved by varying the
arrangement of the LED chips, reflectors and panels on the LED dipped beam headlight module.

Activating the LED headlights
The LED headlights are activated via the onboard supply control unit J519 which communicates with the output

performed by the headlight range control unit J431. This receives the signal from the rear left vehicle level
sender G76.

The maintenance intervals

Inspections depend on the length of time and the mileage. The first inspection takes place after 30,000 km or

control number VI9 refers specifically to an Aelectric
