Introduction

1 INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this calculation note is to design the test piles (12m Length) for initial vertical
and lateral pile load tests. It will be noted that the verification for vertical and lateral capacities
will be done on single pile only. The test pile here is carried out with no vertical load on pile.
The location of test piles for ROB cum elevated corridor at CH:117+145 is shown in Drawing.

The test pile design here is carried out with no vertical load on the pile. Hence the provided
reinforcement is for test pile only.

For the working pile, the provided reinforcement would be as per the combined design loads
(both vertical and lateral loads). It must also be noted that the pile length can also be variable
for working piles.

General Hypothesis

2.1 Design Basis

The design of the test pile is carried out in accordance with the following documents.

Soil report document provided by Geotechnical agency

IRC: 112 Code of Practice for Concrete Road Bridges
IS: 2911-2010 Part I/Sec 2
IS: 2911-2013 Part IV
IRC: 78-2014

2.2 Materials Parameters

2.2.1 Concrete characteristics

Initail Load Test - Vertical

3.0 Initail Load Test - Vertical

3.1 Criteria
The testing will be carried out as per IS: 2911-2013 (Part IV). According to clause 7.1.5, safe
load on single pile should be least of the following
Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a value of 18mm
50% of the final load at which the total displacement equal 10% of the pile dia.

The actual load coming on pile is approx., 1900kN (UNDER LOAD COMB 1 OF IRC:78-2014)
and the geotechnical capacity of pile provided by geotechnical expert for at CH: 117+145 is
4310kN (Test load = 4310*2.5) for a pile depth of 12000mm below cut off level. The purpose
of this load test is to verify the geotechnical capacity provided by the geotechnical agency and
hence the test load is slightly higher as compared to actual load

Compressive strength of concrete, fck fck = 35 MPa

Tensile strength, fy fy = 500 MPa
Dia of pile dia = 1200 mm

Design compressive strength of steel,  fyc = fy/Ym

Where, Ym = 1.15
fyc = 434.8 MPa

Ultimate vertical load, P P = 0.45*fck*Ac + fyc*Asc

Provide Dia of Rebar f = 20 mm

No. of Bars Nrs = 25 Nrs
Area of longitudinal reinforcement, Asc Asc = 7854 mm^2
Ag = 1130973 mm^2
Area of concrete, Ac  Ac = (Ag‐Asc) = 1123119 mm^2

Ultimate vertical load, Pu Pu = 21104 kN

Safe Ultimate Vert. Load corresponding to provided reinft. = 10775 kN

< 21104 kN

Chapter - 4
Initail Load Test - Lateral

4.1 Initail Load Test - Lateral

The foundation for the substructure has group of piles connected by a pile cap. The substructure
rests on the pile cap. The arrangement of the foundation is such that under lateral loads, the
group of piles displaces uniformly and hence the top of each pile acts as fixed head.

In a lateral load test conducted on a single pile, the fixed head condition cannot be simulated. The
load test conducted on a pile corresponds to a free head condition and the safe lateral load
capacity obtained from the test corresponds to that of a free head pile. Hence, the safe lateral load
on fixed head pile will be calculated from a pile load test on free head pile. Lateral pile load test will
be conducted on free head condition to a test load of 2.5 times the design load

The testing will be carried out as per IS: 2911-2013 (Part IV). According to clause 8.4, safe lateral
loads on pile should be least of the following
- 50% of final load at which the total displacement increases to 12mm.
- Final load at which the total displacement corresponds to 5mm.

For Test pile design purpose safe Lateral load capacity of piles is taken as provided by the
geotechnical agency i.e.17T under fixed head condition.

4.2 Design Calculations

Basic Data :
For calculating the depth of fixity and hence the equivalent length of cantilever using the plot given
in fig.4 of IS:2911(Part I/Sec2) 2010
Stiffness factor K = 4 root.(E/KB)
K = 0.005 N/mm^2
Compressive strength of concrete, fck fck = 35 MPa
Young's modulus, E E = 29580.4 MPa
Tensile strength, fy fy = 500 MPa
Dia of pile dia = 1200 mm
Moment of inertia, I I = 1.018E+11 mm^4
Therefore, T T = 3597 mm

4.2.1 Calculation of Depth of Fixity (For Fixed headed Pile)

Free Length of Pile, L L = 0.0 mm
Ratio L1/T = 0.0
(Refer Fig. 4 of IS:2911(Part 1 Sec 2): 2010) Lf/T = 2.2
Depth of fixity, Lf Lf = 7913 mm

4.2.2 Calculation of Depth of Fixity (For Free headed Pile)

Free Length of Pile, L L = 0.0

Ratio L1/T = 0.0
(Refer Fig. 4 of IS:2911(Part 1 Sec 2): 2010) Lf/T = 1.90
Depth of fixity, LF Lf = 6834 mm

5 of 6 2018
Solan Kaithlighat NH-5 PIle test Design Report
The Maximum Lateral Load on a pile = 35 T
(Taken the lateral capacity of pile) ref geo tech report

Deflection of fixed headed pile under Maximum Lateral load = Q*(L1+Lf)^3/12EI

Y = 4.77 mm

However, during initial load test, the pile behaves as a free headed pile
So, Load Required to deflect free headed pile by 4.78m = = Y*3EI/(L1+LF)^3
= 13.5 T
= 13.6 T
Lateral Load for Test (2.5 times lateral load) = 34 T

Fixed end moment for free head pile , MF MF = Q*(L1+LF)

232 T-m
So, the actual maximum moment M = MF.m
where, m for free head pile from graph m = 0.60

(Refer Fig. 5 of IS:2911(Part 1 Sec 2): 2010) So, M = 1394 kNm

If, we provide steel Dia = 20 mm

Nrs = 25 Nrs

STRESS CHECK

Stress in Concrete = 12.13 Mpa

Stresses in Steel = 184.6 Mpa

M/MU = 0.90
