4 .1 Introductory Activity
Form a group of 3 students. Ask them to get the box of matchsticks for this group activity. Let them
work with their respective groups in forming a square using the desired number of matchsticks as shown
below.

4.2 Activity/Strategy
Let the students complete the table by counting the number of matchsticks in each figure.

4.3 Analysis
Ask the students the following questions:
1. How was the activity?
2. What new thing did you learn from the activity?
3.Is there a pattern in the number of matchsticks? If there is, describe it.
4. How is each term (number of matchsticks) found?
5. What is the difference between any two consecutive terms?
4.4 Abstraction
Let us now give the formal definition of arithmetic sequence through a power point presentation. The
teacher will then discuss the definition of sequence on page 12 of the Learner’s Material and provide more
examples. After this, let the students make a concept map on arithmetic sequence in their respective
groups.
Provide the students with an opportunity to learn more about arithmetic sequences. Ask them to
perform Activity 5 on page 13. In this activity, students will be guided in generating a rule of an arithmetic
sequence. Let us discuss the systematic way of finding the missing terms and the nth term of an arithmetic
sequence.
4.5 Application
Let the students answer Activity 9 #1&2 on page 18 of the Learner’s Material. Let them identify
whether the following sequences are arithmetic sequence.
