The chemical reaction are helpful in many ways, the reaction facilities our daily life activity, such as use the reaction of the combustion to
turn on a car and a stove, to create new products and substance like the alloys, but how do we know where is happening a chemical
reaction? First of all what is a chemical reaction? A chemical reaction is known as the process in which the atoms of one substance or more
are rearranged to form different substances that may have different properties.
Now that we know what is a chemical reaction we have to difference where is occurring a reaction, to know this we use chemical equations,
that are representation with formulas and symbols that describe how are the substances before and after the reaction.
Maybe I do not watch literally chemical reaction but all of the things that are around me were made up with chemical reactions, the ink of my
printer, the desk ware made with a derived from petroleum, all the detergents and most of the products that we eat have chemicals.
The chemical reactions had revolution the world from our ancient when they discovered the fire to today where the scientist experiment with
uranium to use it as a fount of energy we have learned how to manipulate in our favor the chemical reaction but not at all.
We have used the chemical reactions in bad ways we have created pollution with the CO emissions and we have contaminated the rivers,
lakes and oceans with chemical wastes
There are other risks that we have to affront, if we do not know that some substances created by chemical reactions are poisonous and
some chemical reactions put in risk our life, we can die intoxicated, be burned or get diseases, like the cancer.
In conclusion, around us there are happening chemical reactions in favor of us and others that put in risk our life, we must be in alert to avoid
the danger, and we must learn to use the chemical reactions not only in favor of the human beings but also of the Earth.
Carbon monoxide is the culpable of thousands of deaths and every person can be victim of this dangerous gas without get noticing about it
because the CO is colourless, oddourless and no irritable gas, this gas is that result from the combustion which we use in plenty of process
like turn on a car, use a heather, use a water heat system, and use a stove.
Glossary
Chemical reaction: the process by which the atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different substances; occurrence can
be indicated by changes in temperature, color, odor, and physical state.
Chemical change: a process involving one or more substances changing into a new substance, also called a chemical reaction.
Chemical equation: a statement using chemical formulas to describe the identities and relative amounts of the reactants and products
involved in the chemical reaction.
Coefficient: in a chemical equation, the number written in front of a reactant or product; in a balanced equation describe the lowest whole-
number ration of the amounts of all reactants and products.
Word equations: use statements to indicate the reactants and products of chemical reactions, ex: aluminum(s)+bromine(l) aluminum
bromide(s)
Skeleton equations: use chemical formulas to identify the reactants and the products, ex. Al(s)+Br₂(l)— >AlBr₃(s)
Synthesis reaction: a chemical reaction in which two or more substances (A and B) react to produce a single product (AB), ex. A+B AB
Combustion reactions: a chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen releasing energy in form of heat and light, ex.
C(s) + O₂(g) CO₃(g)
Decomposition reaction: a chemical reaction that occurs when a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new
compounds, AB A+B, ex. NH₄NO₃(s) N₂O(g) + 2H₂O(g).
Replacement reactions: also called displacement reactions, there exist two types: single replacement reaction and double replacement
reaction.
Single replacement reaction: a reaction in which the atoms of one element replace the atoms of another element in a compound.
A+BX AX+B, ex. 2Li + 2H₂O(l) 2LiOH(aq) + H₂(g)
Double replacement reaction: involve the exchange of ions between two compounds AX+BY AY+BX , ex. Ca(OH)₂(aq)+2HCl(aq) CaCl₂(aq)+
2H₂0(l)
Stoichiometry: used to designate the calculation of quantities of substances involved in chemical reactions
Mole ratio: is a ratio between the numbers of moles of any 2 substances in a balanced chemical equation.
Limiting reactants: limits the extend of the reaction and, and determines the amount of product
Molar mass: the mass in grams of one mole of any pure substance
Mole: is the SI base unit used to measure the amounts of a substance. A mole is defined as the number of carbon atoms in exactly 12 g of
pure carbon 12
