 Cawelti (1965) found three main strands of thought out of a
number of competing versions of the ideas of success :

 The First strand stressed the self disciplinary and religious

virtues.

 The Second strand stressed qualities such as initiative

aggressiveness and forcefulness.

 The Third strand defined success in terms of individual

fulfillment and progress rather than in terms of wealth and
status.

 Achievement (to work) – Accomplishment that is comparable
favorably against similar goals others strive for.

 Happiness (to self) – the feeling of pleasure or contentment

about your own life.

 Significance (to family) – the sense that you’ve made a

positive impact on people you care about.

 Legacy (to community) – A way to establish your values so

as to help others find success in future.
