Foundation and vibration dampening Expansion joints

Expansion joints are installed to
In order to achieve optimum operation and to reduce
noise and vibration to a minimum, it may be necessary • absorb expansions/contractions in the pipework
to consider vibration dampening of the pump in certain caused by changing liquid temperature
cases. Generally this should always be considered in the • reduce mechanical strains in connection with pres-
case of pumps with motors larger than 11 kW. Smaller sure surges in the pipework

advisable to install larger expansion joints corre-
sponding to the pipework.
Expansion Expansion joints with limit rods can be used to minimize
joints the forces caused by the expansion joints. Expansion
joints with limit rods are always recommended for
flanges larger than DN 100.
The pipes should be anchored so that they do not stress
the expansion joints and the pump. Follow the supplier’s

instructions and pass them on to advisers or pipe

Vibration dampers
Terminal box positions
Fig. 34 Example of foundation of a Contra II pump The below terminal box positions are possible for all
pump ranges.
As a rule of thumb, the weight of a concrete foundation
should be 1.5 x the pump weight.

Dampening
To prevent the transmission of vibrations to buildings, it TM03 0117 4004

is advisable to isolate the pump foundation from

building parts by means of vibration dampers. 12 o’clock 3 o’clock 9 o’clock On fan cover
(Bloc-SUPER)
The selection of the right vibration damper requires the
following data: Fig. 35 Possible terminal box positions
• forces transmitted through the damper
• motor speed considering speed control, if any
• required dampening in % (suggested value is 70%).
Which is the right damper varies from installation to
installation, and a wrong damper may increase the
vibration level. Vibration dampers should therefore be
sized by the supplier.
If the pump is installed on a pedestal with vibration
dampers, expansion joints should always be fitted on
the pump flanges. This is important to prevent the pump
from "hanging" in the flanges.

Curve conditions
The guidelines below apply to the curves shown on the
following pages:
1. Tolerances to ISO 9906, Annex A.
2. QH curves of the individual pumps are shown with
expected speed of a three-phase standard motor.
3. Measurements have been made with airless water at
a temperature of +20°C.
4. The curves apply to a kinematic viscosity of
υ = 1 mm2/s (1 cSt).
5. If the pumped liquid density and/or viscosity is
higher than that of water, it may be necessary to use
a motor with a higher performance.
