Figured
Bass
Rules
• Figures
indicate
intervals
above
the
bass
• Figures
generally
appear
below
the
bottom
staff
• Figures
may
be
altered
with
accidentals
o $ means
lower
the
specified
pitch
a
half-‐step
o ^ means
raise
the
specified
pitch
a
half-‐step
§ a
slash
\
through
a
figure
or
a
+
also
means
raise
the
pitch
a
half-‐step
o % means
add
a
natural
to
the
specified
pitch
• An
accidental
alone
always
applies
to
the
third
above
the
bass
• Figures
do
not
indicate
the
specific
octave
in
which
the
pitches
appear
• Figures
do
not
indicate
the
order
of
pitches
above
the
bass
• However,
figures
joined
by
a
horizontal
line
will
appear
in
the
same
voice
o For
example,
the
figures
7
—
6
would
tell
you
that
a
7th
above
the
bass
moves
to
a
6th
above
the
bass
within
the
same
voice.
• Figures
in
figured
bass
may
contain
accidentals,
but
the
numbers
that
show
chord
inversion
in
roman-‐numeral
analysis
never
contain
accidentals!
o Thus,
your
figured
bass
and
your
roman-‐numeral
analysis
will
always
appear
on
separate
horizontal
lines
below
the
staff.
The
figures
for
triads
