Editor-in-chief

Silver Jubilee of Priestly life must be an occasion to thank Almighty Lord for his blessings,
a landmark to celebrate, and an opportunity to look back, and have a vision for the next 25
or 50 years. In my opinion it’s an important event in the life of priests for two reasons: the
celebrant at his 50s, so that there are at least another 25 great and fruitful years in their
life…..Secondly, it’s a stage in life, to aspire for something greater, something bigger and
the celebrant has age at his side, to plan and achieve.

Rev. Fr Cyprian Henry D’Souza, my next door neighbor, rightly lived a life of high religious
reputation, useful to society at large and integrity to be imitated by people who follow
him…..A highly educated personality, decorated with various qualifications, a reservoir of
real life experiences from rags to riches… and a versatile teacher and a preacher…. has the
credit of changing the life of children as well as youngsters, influencing people towards a
life under the shadow of the Almighty God and bringing hundreds to rejuvanite themselves
as unique creation here on earth, assigned for a mission.

Having a tough and struggling childhood on the shores of tributary Sita, lush and ever
green paddy fields, surrounding hills and fresh water lakes in Barkur - Nagarmut, only son
in the family of Late Jerome D’Souza, and Late Mercine Fernandes, to climb the steps of
High School, chosen by God to serve in his vineyard….’ For I Know the plans, I have for you’,
says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give a future and a hope’
(Jeremiah 29:11) Yes, this small booklet gives a glimpse of Fr D’Souza’s twenty five years
all over India. In Short, of his formative years in Barkur. Certainly, it’s not a full proof

3
information with relevant or actual data, however, it contains, few articles from Fr Henry,
his teachers, companions, parishioners, friends and specially few priests highlighting their
experiences, incidents and narratives to introduce the person from different angles.

Looking back our past and evaluating it, its an attempt to document and preserve, so
that it may be passed on to coming generation is our purpose and intention. We learn
something from everyone who pass through our lives….some lessons are painful, some are
painless but all are priceless…….and in his journey he is not in competition with
anyone…neither nurtured a desire to do better than the other... but simply tried and done
better the role and responsibilities expected of him. That’s why I feel he stands tall and
recognized….and I am confident that once you finish reading these few pages you will
definitly endorse my point.

In this no less than a tedious work, in our busy pre-occupations and engagements many
generous people contributed in many ways. When we just tossed the idea, Mr. James
Fernandes, Chicago USA was the first to appreciate the proposal, followed by many in
different ways. Our `Editorial Team’, also recognize the services of various writers who
took time to refresh and rewind their memories to prepare their respective articles, with a
very short notice. I am greatful to each of them for their valuable contribution.

Barkur has given birth to thirty odd great, devout and talented priests and nine of them
from my neighborhood Nagarmutt and certainly all of them and their yeoman service rightly
deserve to be made known in the hometown. Of course, this is just a small beginning and
undoutedly our parishioners, ward members, especially Fr Cyprian’s well-wishers will
appreciate.

Fr Henry from my point of view as Parish
Priest of Barkur for the last few years......
Fr Henry D Souza SFX is the 7th child out of 8 children. His
parents have left to the heavenly abode. He lost his mother when
he was in First year theology and his father's funeral he
conducted within a year of his priesthood. Fr. Henry's mother
had a great desire to see her son ordained priest of God but she
could only witness it from the bosom of our heavenly Father.

I have experienced that Fr Henry's family is simple, devout

and God fearing. It is said in the Bible, by the fruits you will
know the tree'. On account of Fr Henry's parents prayerful life,
today we have a gift of God who is at the service of the church
and the mankind.

I have heard that God is using him to perform miracles in the

lives of the people. Those who hear him preaching, are
strengthened by the faith that he expresses in the risen lord.

Fr Henry has undergone many difficulties and trials which

would stop him to go ahead. Yet, his endurance, perseverance
Rev. Fr Philip Neri and total trust in God has made him what he is today. I
Aranha understood him better when he shared his life before joining the
Parish Priest seminary and after priesthood on the day of his Silver Jubilee
St. Peter's Church, Celebration.
Barkur - Udupi Diocese
I know that Fr Henry has worked in many dioceses of India
namely Archdiocese of Agra ( U.P.) Archdiocese of Goa,
Dioceses of Karwar, Shimoga, Udupi (then Mangalore), and
presently now in Mangalore. The number of people who
attended the Jubilee programme was a sign of his love and
affection towards the sheep at Salethur and other places where

6
he is shepherding the flock with utmost care and leading them to the risen christ through preaching,
teaching and healing and especially guiding them in life with the power of the Word of God and
Adoration.

Fr. Henry as a missionary has carried the name of Barkur and has been explaining the history of
Barkur to many who wanted to know about it. He also mentions the name of the apostle of Jesus
Bartholomeu who came to India and landed at Uppur-Kallianpur. As per the historians the Apostle
Bartholomeu came to spread the good news of Jesus to Barkur, and as then people who could not
pronounce his name as Bartholomew but bar thoru loro which finally became Barkur. Thus he has
been a faithful son of the soil, spreading the name of Barkur and its worth far and wide. Thus I can
say, Fr. Henry is not a priest only of Pilar Fathers but also an ambassador of our Parish carrying its
richness around the world.

I used to keenly observe Fr Henry. What special I saw in him, which I never told him is that, he
is a very powerful preacher of the word of God. He is found in Divine Word Television almost
every week more than once, which is heard not only in Udupi and Mangalore Dioceses but also
Mumbai, Goa and around the world. He preaches retreats and brings the people close to the heart
of Jesus. Barkur is very proud of this son of its soil, and also all Barkurians are proud of him as
well. Fr Henry’s thoughts are deep.He says we are 'religious but need to be spiritual'. We appreciate
the mighty works he has done to the Lord and to His people under His care.

I heard someone mention to me that he has been Vicar Provincial of the Goa Province. Fr
Henry's priestly Silver Jubilee is not the end but a fresh beginning to take up greater responsibilities
and be a better pastor, a friend, and a philosopher. He has been a counselor to the lost heart to
bring them back spiritually which he does tirelessly even today. I wish and pray along with my
parishioners that God may shower on him the choicest blessings, good health, peace of mind and
a healthy body to continue the good works of the Lord.

May Silver turn to Gold not only by digits but in spirit of the Lord to take many souls to God and
be a priest after the heart of our Lord Jesus.

7
MAY SILVER TURN INTO
GOLD, DEAR FR HENRY!
“You have not chosen me, I have chosen you,” said Jesus to
two young men around 35 years ago in Barkur. God had His
eyes of predilection on Fr Cyprian Henry and Fr Victor. “Come,
follow me,” and “Go, proclaim the Good News” were the
commands received by them. Their enthusiastic and generous
response to the divine call in the Pilar Society of St Francis Xavier
has brought us to this day, the day of their Silver Jubilee of
Priesthood! This is a day to look back with gratitude and look
forward with hope! May the Lord be praised for His gifts of
love to Barkur in the persons of Fr Henry and Fr Victor!

By God’s grace, I completed 43 years as a Priest on 7th

May 2019, thanks to the merciful love and providential care of
the Lord. I feel privileged to tell the Priest who has completed
25 Silver Years that the gift of Priesthood is a great privilege, a
pure gift from God. Priesthood with its sublime dignity ever
V. Rev. Fr Valerian remains an awesome mystery to me. Human mind cannot
Mendonca comprehend this great mystery. Having been born and brought
Parish Priest, up in humble, rural settings, to stand before highly educated
Mother of Sorrows Church, intellectuals to preach the Word of God and bless the young and
Udupi old, Christians as well as Non-Christians in God’s Holy Name,
is something we do not deserve at all! “The Lord has worked
marvels for me, holy is His name!” The Lord’s command to his
apostles on the Maundy Thursday rings loud and clear in our
ears; “Do this in memory of me!” To be another Christ/ a mirror
of Christ to the world is an unmerited privilege the Lord has
deigned to confer on us. Free distribution of God’s gratuitous

8
blessings through the seven Sacraments to the faithful is, indeed, a wonderful privilege. The Lord’s
words are clear: “You have not chosen me. I have chosen you!” May His holy name be praised!
Our beloved Pope Francis has proposed Seven Pillars for the Priesthood to be effective and
efficacious in the modern world:
1. The strength of a priest depends on his relationship with Christ.
2. Just as the priest must be close to Christ, so he must be close to the people he serves.
3. A priest’s authority must be linked to service, especially to the care and protection of the
poorest, weakest, the least important and most easily forgotten.
4. The priest must be a minister of mercy.
5. The priest is called to a simplicity of life.
6. The priest must be a model of integrity.
7. The priest is to be a source of blessing to his people.
Fr Henry has served in the northern as well as southern parts of India as a Religious Priest,
having taken the vows of poverty, obedience and chastity. The parish of Salethur in the diocese of
Mangalore where he serves at present as the Parish Priest is truly blessed to receive his selfless
service. May the Lord continue to grant him showers of heavenly blessings in order to move from
Silver to Gold as a Priest!

Just few words from the desk of our well wisher
Mr. James Fernandes
The place Barkur, historically great, culturally rich, and religiously holy
and at present rightly lives to its honor, as people born and grown here made
and are making their positive and distinct impact wherever they are!
When I was informed of Rev. Fr. Cyprian Henry D’Souza, SFX, hailing
from hamlet Nagarmut, a priest from Pilar congregation, who was about to
celebrate his sacerdotal Silver Jubilee, on 9th May, 2019, just requested the
concern to send little more details….Those couple of lines, thrilled me to see
a dedicated, sincere and talented man of God in him. That inspired to venture
this small booklet which now in your hands.
‘The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces
wonderful results’. (James 5.16)
It’s our observation, in this modern material world, leading a life of a just,
noble, righteous man is difficult. We reached to a stage if one does some pious
social service, people see it with a suspicion why he / she is doing it…there
must be a purpose or agenda! We all are just instruments in the hands of the
Almighty and assigned here with a purpose….
Fr Cyprian Henry too must be midst of us with a larger role, to live,
introduce, familiarize Christ and Christian values to the less fortunate and
deprived lot. He has done it and doing it. In this journey, in coming days don’t
be afraid of losing people…if at all, be afraid of losing yourself by trying to
James Fernandes please everyone around you. While taking this opportunity to congratulate
Chicago, USA you, on your Jubilee, the past twenty five years may serve you as an experience
to experiment still better ways of serving in the vineyard, with an expectation
to do better tomorrow, and in forthcoming years.
Well friends, it’s just our intention to keep informed the society at large that
there are scores of Fr. Henry’s caliber and character around us…. and specially
in Barkur….and this small Souvenir is a tiny step in that direction. All of us
know for sure, time, power, money, even our body / health, may not co-
operate every time in life…but good nature, understanding, life led in spiritual
path and true spirit will always. Hence, let us do whatever good when it’s
possible, if not let us encourage, recognize and pat such people around us.
With lots of congratulations and tons of best wishes to the Jubilarian.

The Gurkar of Nagermutt ward
speaks………
Indeed it’s a joyous day for us. For me it’s more so for
multiple reasons. Yes, my memory goes back to 70s and 80s,
we all used to go to the Maryknoll School in a line and enjoy
our walk, talk and studies together. Later our proximity and
intimacy developed deep during our days in National Junior
College.

It all happened when few of us viz. Archie, Johnny, Derrick,

Canute, Norman, Lancy, Praveen, Norbert, Mark, Solomon…
most of them of my age group, either older than me by a year or
younger…. initiated to form an Association later popularly
known as AYA. There was still another batch, some three years
younger including young Cyprian, Kishore, Wilfred, Ivan,
Claude, Donny, George etc. who were more than enthusiastic
to be part of this platform. Every month we used to gather for a
meeting, rather it was a picnic type, in a particular house in the
ward on rotation. The host household used to serve and provide
snacks and soft drink or coffee to all the children.
Joseph Fernandes
I was fortunate to be its founder Vice President in the year
Gurkar,
1980 – 81 and held that responsibility for the following year
Nagarmut-Pandeshwar
too… Among many others, I was fascinated to notice and
recognize the involvement of the ward as one, during those days.
I will be doing injustice if not mentioning the involvement,
cooperation and encouragement of young girls from the ward,
few names just coming to my mind are, Leela, Veera, Joyce,
Ivy, Marceline, Ophelia, Ivy Furtado, Gretta, Leena, Doris, my
sisters Olivia and Molly, Jyothy, and many others. As I told the
meeting itself ‘a picnic type half day event’, small school going
11
children too were joining their elder siblings. I can recollect few names even now, Alfred, Peter,
Alwyn Andrade, Ronnie Fernandes, Steven, Santhosh, Ozzie, Winnie, Clara etc…singing, some
speeches, debates., used to be permanent part of such outing in the ward itself. On a Sunday
afternoon we were about 40 in total. I must not be wrong in stating that, these meetings were the
opportunities eagerly looked for by the whole ward community…!

In that homely atmosphere, young Cyprian was born and grown and later flown to Goa to be a
missionary priest in Pilar congregation. After long years of studies he was ordained priest on 9th
May, 1994, in Barkur and that was the day of great celebration to all AYA in particular and the
whole ward in general. It’s more so because, he was our own, a proud member and also served as
its office bearer.

Twenty five years gone and Rev. Fr. Cyprian Henry D’Souza served in different states of India,
namely U.P., Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka etc. holding responsible positions. As a good shepherd
in the vineyard of Jesus led many to life of righteousness, celebrated holy sacraments and we thank
the Almighty for his bountiful blessings.

History repeats itself people say and me being the head of the Nagermutt ward, congratulate Fr.
Henry on this joyous occasion… let him enjoy good health, peace of mind throughout the coming
great years and we look forward to see him very soon as a Bishop.

PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH

Rev. Fr. Cyprian Henry D’Souza

(Few extracts from the article published in Barkur online in 2004)

“If you have anything really valuable to contribute to the world, it will come through
the expression of your own personality, that single spark of divinity sets you off and
makes you different from every other living creature.” – Bruce Barton.

The Navaratnas of Nagermutt – Nine talented, devout
priests hailing from my ward….By Archibald Furtado
Is it not a proud feeling, as almost one third, (9 out of 28) of the total priests
that Barkur parish gave birth are from our ward Nagarmutt, rather historically
known Pandeshwar. That may be the possessiveness in us…. or a natural claim
for anything special or extra ordinary. Yes my friends, it was my late Pappa,
Richard Furtado, always used to remember with reverence and remind us of
various priests in our neighborhood. When three of his cousin, William Furtado’s children decided
to join seminary, my papa was seen rejoicing, as if his sons, decided to serve the church. Of course,
we will write about them sometime later in our barkuronline web pages.
For the time being, now we are bringing out a small booklet commemorating the Silver Jubilee
Celebrations of Priesthood of a proud friend Rev. Fr Cyprian Henry D’Souza, the anointed one,
we feel it apt to remember few great priests, from the same ward, whose life and living influenced,
motivated and in a way serve as lamp-posts to be holy, dedicated and faithful. God only puts us
through as much as we can handle, so the people who struggle the most have been chosen by God
to be the strongest ones.
Our readers can visit our website www.barkuronline.com to know more about few of them.
