Theory

The test is to determine the behavior of materials when subjected to high rates of (Sudden)
loading, usually bending, tension or torsion. It measures the energy absorbed in breaking
the specimen by a single below or impact.

The Charpy and Izod notched-bar tests utilize bars of specified geometries to determine
brittleness and impact strength. These tests are helpful in comparing several materials and
in the determination of low temperature brittleness. These tests really provide toughness
data under dynamic, rather than static condition. It may well be that impact data obtained
from these test are as dependent on the notch geometry as they are on the strain rate.
Charpy impact test:

A pendulum type single blow impact test, in which the specimen is supported at both ends, as a
simply supported beam, and broken is supported at both ends, as a simply supported beam, and
broken by falling pendulum on the face opposite to and immediately behind the notch. The energy
absorbed, as determined by the subsequent rise of pendulum, is a measure of impact strength or
notch toughness.

Izod impact test:

A pendulum type single blow impact test in which the specimen, usually notched, is fixed at
one end and broken by a falling pendulum. The energy absorbed as measured by the
subsequent rise of the pendulum is a measure of impact strength or notch toughness. The
impact strength is expressed as N-m

The effect of temperature on impact values shows a ductile- brittle transition. Not all
materials show this transition. In low temperature the fracture appears as brittle. The
critical temperature seems to be dependent on both the material and geometry of the
notch. For this reason designers should not rely on the results of notched-bar tests.
The pendulum impact-testing machine mainly consists of base, front and rear stands and
the pendulum mounted in bearings. The two stands are bolted to the base. The top piece is
bolted on the two stands at the top. Bearing brackets are fixed to the two stands. The
pendulum shaft is mounted in the two bearing brackets with antifriction bearings. The
pendulum is fixed to the pendulum shaft. The pendulum consists of pendulum pipe and the
hammer. The suitable striker is to be fixed to the pendulum as per the test to be conducted.
The two guards are provided to protest from the pendulum swing particularly.

Two separate release mechanism are provided for Charpy and Izod test. The latching tube
for Charpy test is fixed on the top brackets. The latch at the end of latch tube is to be
operated by the two release levers. The release lever is mechanically locked against the lock
lever. Hence the latch can be operated only after operating lock lever by left hand followed
by operation of release lever by right hand. This arrangement ensures safety of the
operator, as both the hands are engaged in operation. The release mechanism for Izod test
consists of the catching tube the catch and the release lever. It is to be fastened to the
machine by means of fixing plates provided. One plate is to be mounted on the bearings
brackets and guards. The indicating mechanism consists of a dial fixed on the front stand
and the indicating pointer, which moves over the dial. The pointer carrier is mounted on the
center shaft and moves along with the pendulum. The indicating pointer indicates the
energy in Joules arranged by the specimen after rupture. The braking arrangement for
stopping the pendulum swing after rupture consists of the braking strip having a
leather/rubber lining at the top. The brake is to be operated by the brake lever.

Procedure

Operational Instruction (Izod Test)

 Fix the pendulum at an angle of 900.

 Adjust the reading pointer and the carrier pointer to 164 J.
 Clamp the pendulum in proper position.
4

1. Place the specimen in its position and clamp it.

2. The dimension of the specimen is to be measured accurately.
3. Release the pendulum hammer by operating the lever.
4. Apply brake carefully to stop the swing of the hammer.
5. Note the pointer reading and record it.
Operational Instruction (Charpy Test)

 Fix the pendulum at an angle of 1400.

 Adjust the reading pointer and the carrier pointer to 300J.
 Clamp the pendulum in proper position.
 Place the specimen in its position.
 The dimension of the specimen is to be measured accurately.
 Release the pendulum hammer by operating the lever.
 Apply brake carefully to stop the swing of the hammer.
